Chapter 11: The Woman Who Came Back With a Warning
Two days later, the woman from the photograph contacted Daniel.
Her name was Vanessa.
I had heard her name before.
Usually from Margaret.
Always followed by a comparison.
Vanessa has a successful family.
Vanessa understands responsibility.
Vanessa knows how to support a man.
I used to wonder what made her so perfect in Margaret’s eyes.
Now I knew.
She wasn’t perfect.
She was useful.
Daniel showed me the message.
I need to talk to you. Alone.
He looked at me.
“What do you think?””
I thought carefully.
“I think she knows something.””
“You want me to meet her?””
“Yes.””
His eyebrows lifted.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because secrets are what gave Margaret power.””
I looked at him.
“The more people who know the truth, the less control she has.””
Daniel agreed.
They met at a coffee shop.
I didn’t go.
Not because I was afraid.
Because this was something Daniel needed to handle.
Two hours later, he came home.
And immediately, I knew.
Vanessa had confirmed something.
“What happened?””
He sat down.
“She apologized.””
I waited.
“For what?””
“For everything.””
He looked exhausted.
“She said she never wanted to be part of this.””
“Do you believe her?””
Daniel was quiet.
“I don’t know.””
That was fair.
Trust was not something rebuilt instantly.
“What did she tell you?””
He pulled out his phone.
“She recorded part of a conversation with my mother.””
My heart jumped.
“What conversation?””
Daniel pressed play.
Margaret’s voice filled the room.
“You need to understand, Vanessa. This is the only way.””
Vanessa’s voice answered.
“I don’t think this is right.””
“You want Daniel to be happy, don’t you?””
“Yes.””
“Then stop questioning me.””
A pause.
Then Margaret said:
“Emily is temporary.””
I felt anger rise.
Not surprise.
Not pain.
Just anger.
Because after everything, Margaret still believed I was a problem to remove.
Daniel turned off the recording.
“There’s more.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She said something else.””
He hesitated.
“She said if you found out about the trust, she had a backup plan.””
My stomach tightened.
“What backup plan?””
Daniel shook his head.
“She didn’t know.””
That frightened me.
Because Margaret’s plans always had layers.
She never made one move.
She made five.
That night, we received a letter.
No return address.
No signature.
Only my name.
Emily.
Inside was a single page.
The handwriting was familiar.
Margaret’s.
You think you have uncovered everything.
You haven’t.
You found documents.
You found messages.
But you still don’t know the truth about why Daniel was chosen.
I read the sentence again.
Why Daniel was chosen.
Chosen?
For what?
I continued.
Your grandfather knew what kind of man Daniel would become. He created conditions for a reason.
A reason your mother does not want you to discover.
My hands became cold.
Because this wasn’t a threat.
It was a warning.
And the person warning me was Margaret.
Which meant one thing.
Something even she was afraid of had been hidden.
I showed Daniel.
He read it silently.
“What does she mean?””
“I don’t know.””
Then the phone rang.
Robert.
Daniel answered.
His father’s voice sounded urgent.
“You need to come here.””
“Dad?””
“There’s something I should have told you years ago.””
Daniel looked at me.
“What is it?””
Robert paused.
Then said:
“Your grandfather didn’t create the trust just because he wanted to leave you money.””
Silence.
“Then why?””
Another pause.
“He created it because he knew Margaret would try to control you.””
Nobody spoke.
The truth was becoming bigger than any of us expected.
Robert continued.
“And there’s something else.””
Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.
“What?””
“Your grandfather left a letter.””
“A letter?””
“Yes.””
“To you.””
“When?””
“Before he died.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why didn’t I get it?””
Robert’s voice became heavy.
“Because your mother took it.””
My heart sank.
Another secret.
Another stolen piece of Daniel’s life.
Another thing Margaret had hidden.
And suddenly, we understood.
May you like
The trust wasn’t the secret.
The letter was.
