Calm

Chapter 7: The Revenge Margaret Planned in Silence

For two weeks after the family meeting, everything seemed strangely calm.

Too calm.

I had learned enough about Margaret to know that peace around her was rarely real. It was usually just the quiet moment before she decided how she wanted to strike back.

Daniel noticed it too.

“She hasn’t called,” he said one evening while we were eating dinner.

I looked up from my plate.

“That bothers you?””

He gave a small, humorless laugh.

“Yes.””

I understood why.

For years, Margaret’s anger had been predictable.

She criticized.

She complained.

She found something wrong.

Silence was different.

Silence meant planning.

“She’s waiting,” I said.

Daniel frowned.

“For what?””

I placed my fork down.

“For an opportunity.””

He leaned back in his chair.

“I hate that you know her better than I do.””

I looked at him.

“That’s because I spent years studying her.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

I immediately felt guilty.

Not because it wasn’t true.

Because it was.

I had spent years learning how to survive around Margaret.

I knew the way her smile changed when she was pretending.

I knew the difference between her fake kindness and genuine concern.

I knew when she was trying to embarrass someone and when she was trying to destroy them.

Daniel had only recently started seeing what I had been living with.

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly.

I sighed.

“I know.””

And that was the hardest part.

I knew Daniel was sorry.

But forgiveness was not the same as forgetting.

Some wounds didn’t disappear just because someone finally admitted they caused them.

Three days later, Margaret made her first move.

It started with a phone call from Claire.

Her voice sounded nervous.

“Emily?””

“Hey, Claire.””

“Are you busy?””

I immediately knew something was wrong.

“No. What happened?””

There was a pause.

“My mom has been talking to relatives.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course she had.

“What is she saying?””

Claire hesitated.

“She’s telling people you’re trying to isolate Daniel from his family.””

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because it was exactly what I expected.

When Margaret lost control of the truth, she attacked the person who revealed it.

“She’s telling everyone I manipulated him,” Claire continued.

I looked across the room at Daniel.

He was working on his laptop.

He noticed my expression.

“What happened?”” he mouthed.

I shook my head slightly.

“Why are you telling me this?”” I asked Claire.

“Because I don’t believe her.””

That surprised me.

A little.

Claire had always been quiet.

She wasn’t cruel like Margaret.

But she also wasn’t someone who liked conflict.

“What changed?””

Claire sighed.

“I found something.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

“My mom’s old emails.””

I sat up straighter.

“What kind of emails?””

“She forgot she had access to a shared family account.””

My fingers tightened around my phone.

“Claire…”

“I know.””

Her voice dropped.

“She was talking to someone.””

“Who?””

Another pause.

Then she answered.

“A lawyer.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“Why would your mother be talking to a lawyer?””

Claire swallowed.

“Because she was asking how to protect herself.””

From what?

The question immediately came into my mind.

But I already knew the answer.

From us.

Margaret wasn’t trying to repair the damage.

She was preparing for war.

“What exactly did the lawyer say?”” I asked.

“I only saw part of the conversation.””

“And?””

Claire’s voice became quieter.

“She said she wanted to make sure Daniel couldn’t access certain family assets without her approval.””

I froze.

Family assets.

The phrase sounded harmless.

But with Margaret, nothing was harmless.

“What assets?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was watching me now.

He could tell something was wrong.

“Claire, send me everything you have.””

“I will.””

Before hanging up, she added:

“Emily?””

“Yes?””

“I’m sorry.””

The sincerity in her voice surprised me.

“For what?””

“For believing my mom for so long.””

I looked down.

“You didn’t know.””

“But I should have noticed.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because so many people had noticed pieces of Margaret’s behavior.

They just chose not to put the pieces together.

That night, Daniel and I went through the documents Claire sent.

And slowly, the picture became clearer.

Margaret wasn’t just angry.

She was scared.

“She’s worried about money,” Daniel said.

I looked at him.

“Not just money.””

“What do you mean?””

I pointed to the email.

“She’s worried about losing influence.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

The realization hit him.

“My mother doesn’t care about the assets.””

“No.””

“She cares about control.””

“Yes.””

He leaned back.

“I don’t even know who she is anymore.””

I understood that feeling.

Because I had spent years asking the same question.

But then another email caught my attention.

One line.

One sentence.

A sentence that changed everything.

I read it again.

Then again.

Daniel noticed.

“What?””

I turned the laptop toward him.

“Look.””

His eyes moved across the screen.

The email was from Margaret to the lawyer.

It said:

If Emily discovers the truth about the inheritance, she will use it against me.

Daniel went completely still.

“Inheritance?””

I nodded.

“What inheritance?””

For the first time in weeks, I saw genuine fear on his face.

Not fear of his mother.

Fear of what he didn’t know.

Because apparently, Margaret had been hiding something much bigger than a financial betrayal.

May you like

Something that involved Daniel.

And something she was desperate to keep away from me.
