Chapter 8: The Daughter Who Came Back With the Truth

Three days later, Daniel received a message from an unknown number.

At first, he ignored it.

Then another message arrived.

I know what happened with Vanessa. I think you need to hear it from me.

Daniel stared at the screen.

A name appeared underneath.

Lily.

His hands became cold.

He didn’t know why.

Maybe because part of him already knew what she was going to say.

He agreed to meet her.

Lily arrived at the restaurant looking nothing like what Daniel expected.

She wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t dramatic.

She was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm people develop after surviving something painful.

“I’m sorry to contact you like this,” she said.

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t need to apologize.””

She gave a small smile.

“That’s something I used to do a lot.””

“What?””

“Apologize.””

Daniel looked at her.

“For everything.””

The words immediately reminded him of Nia.

“I’m Daniel.””

“I know.””

She looked down.

“I know a lot about you.””

Daniel stiffened.

“From Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

That worried him.

“What did she say?””

Lily laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was predictable.

“She said you were a good man. A successful man. Someone who would never believe a child over his wife.””

Daniel felt the sting of those words.

Because there was truth inside them.

“I was wrong.””

Lily studied his face.

“You realized.””

“Yes.””

A long silence followed.

Then Lily reached into her bag.

She pulled out a worn notebook.

Daniel’s heart sank.

Another journal.

“She tried to take this from me.””

He looked at it.

“What is it?””

“The truth.””

Lily opened the notebook.

“These are things I wrote when I was eight.””

Daniel looked away.

He couldn’t handle the similarities.

“Why show me this?””

“Because I heard about Nia.””

Daniel looked up.

“How?””

“Vanessa called me.””

That surprised him.

“She called you?””

Lily nodded.

“She wanted advice.””

Daniel frowned.

“About what?””

“How to fix things with you.””

A strange feeling moved through him.

“She called you because she thought you would help her?””

“Yes.””

“And what did you say?””

Lily looked directly at him.

“I told her the same thing I wish someone had told me.””

“What?””

“That children remember.””

Daniel was silent.

Lily continued.

“She doesn’t understand that. She thinks if she apologizes enough, people forget.””

“Will she apologize?””

Lily looked away.

“No.””

Daniel waited.

“She will apologize for being caught.””

The distinction hurt because it felt true.

That evening, Daniel returned home with a heavy heart.

He found Caleb sitting on the porch.

“You found something.””

Daniel sat beside him.

“Yes.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at the sky.

“A girl who went through something similar to Nia.””

Caleb became quiet.

“Is Vanessa dangerous?””

Daniel hated that his son had to ask that question.

“I don’t know.””

“But you think she is.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Caleb nodded slowly.

“I knew something was wrong.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You’re just a kid.””

“No.””

Caleb’s voice was quiet.

“I’m her brother.””

That sentence stayed with Daniel.

May you like

Because Caleb wasn’t trying to be brave.

He was trying to protect someone he loved.
