Chapter 2: The Secrets Hidden Behind Perfect Smiles

The next morning, Vanessa acted like nothing happened.

That was what scared Caleb the most.

She walked into the kitchen wearing a perfectly pressed outfit, her hair styled flawlessly, her coffee cup held delicately in her hand.

She looked like the woman everyone admired.

The woman neighbors described as “amazing.””

The woman who posted pictures online about family, love, and gratitude.

Nobody outside the house knew what happened behind closed doors.

Nobody knew that Nia had stopped asking for seconds because she already knew the answer.

Nobody knew that Caleb secretly saved snacks from his lunchbox because he worried his little sister might go hungry.

Nobody knew that a child could learn loneliness while living inside a beautiful home.

“Good morning,” Vanessa said brightly.

Nia looked confused.

She always became confused when Vanessa acted kind after being cruel.

It was like watching someone switch masks.

“Come here, sweetheart,” Vanessa said.

Nia hesitated.

Then she walked over.

Vanessa fixed the girl’s hair and smiled.

Anyone watching would have thought it was a loving moment.

But Caleb noticed something.

Nia wasn’t relaxing.

She was holding her breath.

Children knew things adults ignored.

They knew when affection was real.

They knew when kindness had a price.

Later that afternoon, Caleb found Nia sitting alone in the backyard.

She was holding an old photograph.

“What’s that?”” he asked.

Nia quickly covered it.

“Nothing.””

Caleb sat beside her.

“You know you can tell me anything.””

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she handed him the picture.

It was their mother.

Their real mother.

The woman who had died years earlier.

Caleb looked at the photograph and felt a wave of sadness.

“I miss her,” Nia whispered.

“Me too.””

“She used to cut my chicken into little pieces because I couldn’t use the knife.””

Caleb looked away.

That simple memory hurt.

Because Vanessa had taken more than food.

She had taken the feeling of being cared for.

That evening, Daniel came home earlier than usual.

He found Caleb and Nia together.

“Can I talk to you two?””

The children exchanged nervous looks.

Daniel sat down.

“I owe both of you an apology.””

Caleb didn’t answer.

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I should have noticed things sooner.””

Nia stared at the floor.

“Dad,” she whispered, “did I do something wrong?””

The question destroyed him.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“No, sweetheart. You never did anything wrong.””

For the first time in a long time, Nia looked directly at him.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“I need to ask you something. Has Vanessa ever made you feel like you don’t belong here?””

The silence answered before she did.

And Daniel finally understood.

The problem was not one dinner.

May you like

The chicken was only the moment everyone could see.

The real damage had been happening quietly for years.
