Chapter 7: The Secret Vanessa Buried for Years

Daniel stayed awake until sunrise.

The conversation with Vanessa’s mother replayed in his mind over and over.

“She lost custody of her first husband’s daughter.””

Those words felt impossible.

Not because he believed Vanessa was incapable of cruelty anymore.

He had seen enough.

But because he had spent years defending her.

Years telling himself that everyone misunderstood her.

Years convincing himself that Nia was simply struggling to adjust.

Now he wondered how many times the truth had been standing right in front of him.

The next morning, Daniel sat across from Caleb and Nia at the breakfast table.

For the first time in weeks, the atmosphere felt peaceful.

No one was watching their movements.

No one was measuring how much they ate.

No one was making them feel like they needed permission to exist.

Nia spread strawberry jam on her toast and smiled.

It was such a small thing.

But Daniel noticed.

Before, she used to look around before taking anything from the table.

Like she was afraid someone would tell her she didn’t deserve it.

Now she reached for the jam without hesitation.

That broke his heart.

A child should never have to relearn how to be comfortable in her own home.

“Dad?””

Daniel looked up.

Caleb was watching him carefully.

“You look worried.””

Daniel forced a smile.

“I’m just thinking.””

“About Vanessa?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Caleb’s expression changed.

“Is she coming back?””

Daniel looked at his son.

“I don’t know.””

The truth was, he didn’t know what Vanessa would do next.

But he knew one thing.

He couldn’t protect his children by hiding information from them.

Later that afternoon, Daniel met with Vanessa’s mother, Evelyn, at a quiet coffee shop across town.

She arrived ten minutes early.

That alone told Daniel she had been carrying this secret for a long time.

“Thank you for meeting me,” Evelyn said.

Daniel nodded.

“I need answers.””

She looked down at her hands.

“I know.””

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Evelyn finally began.

“Before you, Vanessa was married to a man named Michael.””

“I know about Michael.””

“You know they divorced.””

Daniel nodded.

“What you don’t know is what happened afterward.””

Evelyn took a deep breath.

“They had a daughter. Her name was Lily.””

Daniel felt a cold feeling settle in his chest.

“How old was she?””

“Eight.””

The number hit him.

Eight years old.

The same age as Ava.

The same age Nia had been when things started feeling wrong.

“What happened?””

Evelyn looked ashamed.

“Vanessa always wanted people to see her as the perfect mother. The perfect wife. The perfect woman.””

Daniel said nothing.

“But behind closed doors, she was different.””

“Different how?””

“She controlled everything.””

Evelyn explained how Vanessa slowly created distance between Lily and her father.

How she convinced Michael that the child was difficult.

How she kept records of every mistake Lily made while ignoring her own behavior.

“She made everyone believe Lily was the problem,” Evelyn whispered.

Daniel felt sick.

“Until what happened?””

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“One night, Lily called her father crying.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“What did she say?””

“She said she was scared to go home.””

The words sat between them.

Heavy.

Painful.

“And Michael believed her?””

“At first, no.””

Daniel looked up.

Evelyn’s eyes filled with regret.

“He believed Vanessa. Just like everyone else.””

Daniel understood immediately.

Because he had done the same thing.

“Then how did the truth come out?””

“Lily started keeping notes.””

Daniel froze.

“A diary?””

Evelyn nodded.

“A journal. She wrote everything down.””

Daniel thought about Nia’s pink notebook.

The similarities were terrifying.

“She wrote about being ignored. About being blamed. About feeling unwanted.””

Daniel looked away.

“And custody?””

“Michael eventually found out. He took her to court.””

Evelyn swallowed.

“The judge didn’t believe Vanessa’s version of events.””

Daniel stared at her.

“So she lost custody.””

“Yes.””

The coffee shop suddenly felt too small.

Too quiet.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Because I thought she changed.””

Daniel almost laughed.

But there was no humor in it.

“Did she?””

May you like

Evelyn didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.
