Chapter 9: The Past Connor Buried Forever
I read Eleanor’s letter three more times that night.
Not because I did not understand the words.
Because I did.
And that was what frightened me.
People rarely hide small things.
They hide things that can change how others see them.
Connor had spent years building an image.
Successful businessman.
Perfect husband.
Man who deserved better.
But every layer I removed revealed another lie underneath.
I called Kenneth first thing in the morning.
“I need you to investigate something.””
“What?””
“Connor’s past.””
There was silence.
“What specifically?””
“I don’t know.””
That was the problem.
I did not know what I was looking for.
Only that Eleanor believed it mattered.
Kenneth agreed.
By afternoon, he called.
“I found something.””
I sat up.
“What?””
“Before Connor married you, there was an incident.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of incident?””
“Financial.””
I closed my eyes.
“Of course.””
Kenneth continued.
“Connor was involved in a business dispute with his former partner.””
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because it was sealed.””
I frowned.
“Sealed?””
“Yes.””
That word carried weight.
“Why?””
“Because someone paid for confidentiality.””
I looked out my office window.
“Who?””
Kenneth paused.
Then answered.
“Eleanor Fleming.””
I froze.
His mother.
“She protected him.””
“Yes.””
“From what?””
Another pause.
“From a lawsuit.””
I stood.
“What did he do?””
“Kirsten, I don’t want to make assumptions.””
“I’m not asking for assumptions.””
My voice hardened.
“I’m asking for facts.””
Kenneth sighed.
“The facts are that Connor was accused of manipulating company records to benefit himself.””
I stared at my desk.
That sounded familiar.
The hidden assets.
The financial transfers.
The pattern.
“Kenneth.””
“Yes?””
“Find everything.””
“I will.””
After the call, I sat there thinking about Eleanor.
She knew.
She knew the kind of person her son could become.
And somehow, she still tried to protect him.
Maybe that was what parents did.
Maybe they saw the worst parts of their children and hoped love could fix them.
But love could not fix someone who refused to change.
That evening, I received another unexpected visitor.
Connor.
Again.
This time, he looked desperate.
“Kirsten.””
I opened my door halfway.
“What?””
“I know you’re investigating.””
My expression changed.
“How?””
“Because Kenneth asked questions.””
I stared at him.
“You’re monitoring me now?””
“No.””
“Then how do you know?””
He looked away.
And that was enough.
“You still have people watching my life.””
“No.””
“Connor.””
He sighed.
“Fine.””
The honesty was almost unsettling.
“I heard from someone.””
“Who?””
He ignored the question.
“I need you to stop.””
I laughed.
“Stop?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His face tightened.
“Because you don’t understand what you’re looking for.””
That sentence made my blood run cold.
Not because it threatened me.
Because it confirmed there was something.
“What am I looking for, Connor?””
Silence.
Then:
“Something that doesn’t matter anymore.””
I stared at him.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
He looked tired.
“Kirsten, please.””
Please.
A word I never heard enough when I needed it.
“You spent years hiding things from me.””
My voice lowered.
“Now you’re asking me to stop finding them?””
He had no answer.
Then I asked:
“Did your mother know?””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
That was all I needed.
“You knew.””
“Kirsten…”
“You knew she wrote that letter.””
He looked away.
And suddenly, the pieces connected.
The fear.
The secrets.
The desperate attempts to control the situation.
Connor had not been afraid of losing his marriage.
He had been afraid of losing control of the story.
I stepped back.
“You should have told me the truth.””
He looked at me.
“I was afraid you would leave.””
I almost whispered.
“You were afraid I would leave after you spent years giving me reasons to.””
Neither of us spoke.
Then Connor said something I never expected.
“I loved you.””
I looked at him.
Maybe he believed that.
Maybe in his own broken way, he did.
But love was not just a feeling.
Love was a choice.
And Connor had made his choices.
“I believe you did.””
His eyes lifted.
“But you loved yourself more.””
The silence afterward was painful.
But it was honest.
And for the first time…
Connor had nothing to say.
Because the truth was the one thing he could never manipulate.
And somewhere deep inside, I knew this was only the beginning.
May you like
Because whatever Eleanor had discovered before she died…
was something Connor was willing to destroy everything to keep hidden.
