Chapter 13: The Sister Who Carried the Secret Alone

I spent the entire night staring at the photograph.

Rebecca Fleming.

Connor’s sister.

Standing beside Daniel Harper and Connor years before I ever entered their lives.

Three people.

Three stories.

One secret.

The hardest part was not discovering that Connor had lied.

I already knew that.

The hardest part was realizing how many people had been carrying the truth while I lived inside a completely different reality.

I thought back to every family dinner.

Every holiday.

Every conversation with Rebecca.

She was always quiet.

Always careful.

I had mistaken her silence for personality.

Now I wondered if it had actually been fear.

The next morning, I called her.

She answered after three rings.

“Kirsten?””

Her voice immediately told me something.

She knew why I was calling.

“I need to see you.””

A long pause.

“Okay.””

No questions.

No hesitation.

Just acceptance.

We met at a small café near her office.

The moment she walked in, I noticed something different.

She looked like someone who had finally accepted that running was no longer possible.

She sat across from me.

“You found Rachel.””

I did not react.

“How do you know about Rachel?””

Rebecca looked down.

“Because I introduced her to Daniel.””

That answer caught me off guard.

“What?””

She sighed.

“Before you know everything, you need to understand something.””

I waited.

“My brother wasn’t always cruel.””

I frowned.

That was not what I expected.

Rebecca continued.

“When we were younger, Connor was different.””

“Different how?””

“He cared what people thought of him, but he also cared about people.””

I listened quietly.

“Then our father died.””

Something changed in her expression.

“Connor was twenty-four. He inherited responsibility overnight.””

“That doesn’t excuse anything.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“It doesn’t.””

There was no defense in her voice.

Only sadness.

“But that was when he changed.””

She explained how Connor became obsessed with success.

How he believed being respected mattered more than being loved.

How every failure became something he had to hide.

“Daniel was the only person who challenged him.””

“And that made Connor angry.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Daniel saw through him.””

I looked at the photograph.

“What happened between them?””

Rebecca took a deep breath.

“Connor started moving company funds.””

“Like the records showed.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because he was desperate.””

“For money?””

“No.””

That surprised me.

“For control.””

The answer made sense.

More than I wanted it to.

Rebecca continued.

“Connor had borrowed money to maintain the image he created. Expensive offices. Luxury cars. Investments he couldn’t afford.””

“So he was pretending.””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel found out.””

“Yes.””

I leaned forward.

“What did Rebecca do?””

She closed her eyes.

“I tried to stop him.””

The sentence was strange.

Because she was talking about herself.

“What do you mean?””

“I confronted Connor.””

“When?””

“Before Daniel died.””

The café suddenly felt too quiet.

“What happened?””

Rebecca’s hands tightened around her coffee cup.

“He told me I was choosing strangers over family.””

I said nothing.

“He said if I exposed him, I would destroy everyone.””

“Everyone?””

“He meant our mother. Our family name. Everything.””

I almost laughed.

Because that sounded exactly like Connor.

He always made his choices seem like everyone else’s responsibility.

“What did you do?””

“I stayed silent.””

Her voice broke.

“I regret that every day.””

For the first time, I saw the full weight she carried.

Not guilt because she helped him.

Guilt because she failed to stop him.

“What about Eleanor?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“She knew.””

My heart sank.

“She knew everything?””

“Not everything.””

“What did she know?””

“That Connor had crossed a line.””

I looked down.

“Why did she protect him?””

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“Because she was his mother.””

A painful silence followed.

“She believed she could save him.””

“But she couldn’t.””

“No.””

Rebecca wiped her eyes.

“She realized that too late.””

I thought about Eleanor’s letter.

The warning.

The regret.

“She wanted me to know.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Rebecca looked directly at me.

“Because she believed you were the only person Connor couldn’t manipulate.””

I almost smiled.

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“He manipulated me for years.””

Rebecca disagreed.

“He convinced you to doubt yourself.””

A pause.

“But he never changed who you were.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because maybe that was the difference.

Connor could hurt me.

But he could never turn me into him.

Rebecca reached into her bag.

“I have something.””

She placed a small recorder on the table.

My breath caught.

“What is that?””

“My mother’s.””

“Eleanor’s?””

She nodded.

“She recorded conversations after Daniel’s death.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew she might not be able to speak publicly.””

I looked at the recorder.

“What’s on it?””

May you like

Rebecca whispered:

“The reason Connor destroyed his own family.””
