Chapter 6: The Truth Connor Never Expected Me to Find

I read the message again.

Then again.

Because sometimes your brain refuses to accept information that changes everything.

I know already.

Three words.

Three words that destroyed the story Connor had been telling everyone.

He was not a man who had been betrayed.

He was a man who might have known the truth and continued anyway.

“Rebecca.””

My voice was quiet.

“Who sent this?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I found it printed in his office.””

I looked at the paper.

The message had no clear sender.

No explanation.

Only a timestamp.

A date.

A date before Connor announced his son’s birth.

Before he stood in front of me and acted like he had created the perfect life.

My mind raced.

Why would he continue?

Why would he pretend?

Unless…

Unless there was something he wanted more than the truth.

Money.

Image.

Control.

That was Connor.

A man who cared more about looking successful than actually being happy.

Kenneth called while we were still sitting there.

I answered immediately.

“Kenneth.””

“I need you to come to my office.””

“Why?””

“Because I received new information.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She looked just as worried.

“What kind of information?””

A pause.

“The paternity test results.””

My heart sank.

“The official ones?””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“Where are you?””

Thirty minutes later, I was sitting across from Kenneth again.

This time, Connor was there.

And Melinda.

The room felt smaller.

Connor looked exhausted.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect businessman image had disappeared.

For the first time, he looked like an ordinary man facing consequences.

Kenneth placed a document on the table.

“The results are official.””

Nobody spoke.

Melinda held her hands together.

Connor stared at the envelope.

“Just tell me.””

Kenneth opened it.

“The probability of paternity is zero.””

Silence.

Complete silence.

Connor closed his eyes.

Melinda started crying.

And strangely, I felt no satisfaction.

Because there was a child involved.

An innocent child who had no control over the choices adults made.

Connor whispered:

“Who is the father?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question nobody wanted to face.

Melinda looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

And for the first time, I saw something different.

Not just guilt.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Who is he?””

She covered her face.

“I can’t.””

Connor stood.

“You can’t?””

His voice broke.

“You destroyed my marriage. You lied to me. And now you can’t tell me?””

The irony was painful.

Because he was finally feeling the same confusion he had caused me.

But I still did not celebrate.

Pain was not a competition.

One person suffering did not erase another person’s wounds.

Kenneth interrupted.

“There is another issue.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What now?””

He turned toward Connor.

“The financial documents show you were aware of possible questions regarding paternity before the divorce.””

Connor froze.

Melinda looked at him.

“What?””

I watched carefully.

Because that reaction told me everything.

She did not know.

Connor knew something.

“What does that mean?”” she asked.

Kenneth answered.

“It means Connor may have continued the relationship under false circumstances while using information that affected the divorce agreement.””

Connor’s face changed.

“No.””

Nobody moved.

“No, you don’t understand.””

I looked at him.

“Then explain.””

For once, Connor had no perfect answer.

No clever response.

No excuse.

Just silence.

And that silence was louder than any confession.

A week ago, Connor had stood in the hospital hallway smiling.

He had pointed at the baby.

He had told me he built a real family.

He had wanted me to feel like I was the one who lost.

But now the truth was standing in front of all of us.

The family he used to hurt me was built on questions.

The marriage he abandoned me for was built on secrets.

And the man who thought he had won…

was finally facing the one thing he could not control.

The truth.

I gathered my things.

Connor looked at me.

“Kirsten.””

I stopped.

For a moment, I wondered what he would say.

An apology?

A confession?

A final attempt to make me understand?

Instead, he whispered:

“Did you ever love me?””

The question surprised me.

Because after everything…

that was the one thing he still did not understand.

I turned around.

“Yes.””

His eyes filled.

“I loved you.””

A tear fell from his face.

“But I stopped loving the person you became.””

Then I walked away.

May you like

And this time…

I did not look back. :::
