Chapter 5: The Husband Who Knew Too Much
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I believed Adrian.
Because I knew him.
Adrian was many things.
Arrogant.
Ambitious.
Selfish.
But he was not careless.
Every word he spoke had a purpose.
Especially when he wanted to hurt someone.
At six in the morning, I was already in my father’s archive room.
The room was located beneath Ashcroft Holdings headquarters.
Almost nobody knew it existed.
My father kept everything here.
Old contracts.
Private records.
Family documents.
Things too important to store digitally.
I spent three hours searching.
Nothing.
No mention of Adrian.
No hidden agreements.
No unusual transactions.
Then I found something.
A small envelope inside a locked drawer.
My name was written on it.
Eleanor.
My hands froze.
I knew my father’s handwriting.
I had seen it thousands of times.
Slowly, I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single letter.
My dearest Eleanor,
If you are reading this, then something has happened that requires you to know the truth.
My heart started beating faster.
I continued.
There are people who will tell you they love you because they need something from you.
There are people who will stand beside you because your shadow gives them protection.
Learn the difference.
I stopped reading for a moment.
My father knew.
Not everything.
But enough.
Enough to warn me.
I continued.
Adrian Vale is talented.
But talent without character becomes dangerous.
My breath caught.
Adrian.
My father had written his name.
Years before the betrayal.
Years before the gala.
Years before Vanessa.
How?
The letter continued.
I supported his rise because I believed you deserved someone who could challenge you.
But never forget this:
A man who needs to feel superior will eventually resent the person who makes him feel small.
I slowly lowered the paper.
My father had seen something I refused to see.
I loved Adrian.
And love had made me blind.
The final sentence made my hands shake.
If Adrian ever turns against you, do not fight him as a wife.
Fight him as an Ashcroft.
Because that is the person he will fear.
I sat there silently.
My father knew.
He knew Adrian’s ambition.
He knew the danger.
And somehow, he still let me choose.
That was the kind of father he was.
He protected me without controlling me.
A phone call interrupted my thoughts.
Daniel.
“Mrs. Ashcroft, we found another issue.””
I folded the letter carefully.
“What now?””
“Adrian has been meeting with investors privately.””
My eyes narrowed.
“After he was removed?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Daniel paused.
“Several former board members.””
I understood immediately.
Adrian wasn’t trying to return.
He was trying to create opposition.
“He’s building a replacement board.””
“Exactly.””
I stood.
“Where is he meeting them?””
Daniel gave me the location.
A private club downtown.
One of the oldest in the city.
I smiled slightly.
Adrian always loved dramatic moves.
He wanted a battlefield.
Fine.
I would give him one.
The private club was filled with old money.
The kind of place where people whispered instead of shouted.
Adrian sat at a corner table surrounded by investors.
When he saw me enter, his expression changed.
He wasn’t surprised.
He expected me.
“I knew you would come.””
I walked toward the table.
“Of course you did.””
The men around him became uncomfortable.
Adrian stood.
“You should leave.””
“No.””
I looked around.
“Actually, I think everyone should stay.””
One investor frowned.
“This is private.””
I smiled.
“Nothing involving my company is private.””
The room became silent.
Adrian’s face darkened.
“You think owning shares makes you untouchable?””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I think integrity does.””
He laughed.
“Integrity?””
“Yes.””
I placed a folder on the table.
“Your unauthorized transfers.””
His smile disappeared.
“Your private contracts.””
Another folder.
“Your attempt to influence shareholders after removal.””
Another.
The investors began looking uncomfortable.
Adrian looked at the documents.
“You were watching me.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I leaned closer.
“I was finally looking.””
That hurt him.
Because it was true.
I had spent years trusting him.
Now I was seeing him clearly.
One investor slowly stood.
“Adrian, perhaps this meeting should end.””
Another followed.
Then another.
Within minutes, the people he expected to support him were leaving.
Adrian watched them disappear.
And something inside him broke.
Not his confidence.
Not yet.
Something deeper.
His belief that people would always choose him.
When we were alone, he whispered:
“You really hate me now.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
He seemed surprised.
“I don’t hate you.””
I picked up the folders.
“I just finally stopped loving the version of you that never existed.””
For the first time…
Adrian looked truly defeated.
But then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
He answered.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“That’s impossible.””
I watched him carefully.
“What happened?””
He slowly lowered the phone.
And when he looked at me, I knew.
Whatever was happening…
It was bigger than Adrian.
Bigger than Vanessa.
Bigger than the company.
“My father’s old partner is back,” he said.
I frowned.
“What partner?””
May you like
Adrian looked at me.
“The one who knows why your father really chose me.””
