Chapter 13: The Recording That Exposed The Real Mastermind
The recording lasted forty-seven minutes.
Forty-seven minutes that changed everything.
I sat alone in my office with the lights dimmed, listening to the voice of the man who had spent years hiding behind charm and influence.
Morgan Blackwell.
At first, his voice sounded calm.
Almost friendly.
That was the most disturbing part.
People imagined dangerous people as angry.
Loud.
Obvious.
But the most dangerous people were often the ones who smiled while they planned destruction.
The recording began with Morgan speaking to Adrian.
“I need you to understand something, Adrian. Eleanor Ashcroft is not your obstacle.””
A pause.
“She is the obstacle.””
I tightened my grip on the device.
Morgan continued.
“Your entire life, you have been standing next to a woman who was born into power. You have spent years proving yourself while she simply inherited everything.””
Adrian’s voice appeared.
“I built Vale Meridian.””
Morgan laughed softly.
“No, you managed Vale Meridian.””
A silence followed.
Then Morgan said the words that revealed everything.
“And that is exactly why you are useful.””
I stopped the recording.
Useful.
That was the word.
Not partner.
Not ally.
Useful.
I continued listening.
Morgan had approached Adrian because he understood his weakness.
He knew Adrian wanted recognition.
He knew Adrian hated feeling like someone else’s shadow.
He knew exactly what to say.
“You don’t need Eleanor,” Morgan told him.
“You need to take what should have been yours.””
Adrian had believed him.
That was the tragedy.
Not because Adrian was innocent.
He wasn’t.
But because Morgan had found the worst parts of him and convinced him those parts were his strengths.
The recording continued.
Then I heard something that made my entire body go still.
Morgan mentioned my father.
“Your father-in-law knew this day would come.””
Adrian sounded confused.
“What?””
“Mason Ashcroft knew you would eventually become ambitious enough to challenge Eleanor.””
My father.
Again.
Morgan continued.
“He expected it.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
My father had known.
Not only about Adrian.
About Morgan.
About everything.
The recording continued.
“Mason created protections because he knew men like you would eventually appear.””
Adrian asked:
“Then why did he choose me?””
Morgan answered:
“Because he needed a shield.””
I stopped breathing for a moment.
A shield.
That was the word Rebecca had never understood.
Adrian had not been chosen because my father trusted him more.
He had been chosen because my father understood something.
Power attracted enemies.
And sometimes, the person closest to the throne became the first target.
Morgan explained everything.
My father knew that if Ashcroft Holdings remained controlled only by my name, enemies would come directly after me.
So he created Vale Meridian as a public empire.
A company with a visible leader.
A company that could attract attention away from the true owner.
Adrian was never the king.
He was the armor.
But eventually, the armor started believing it was the warrior.
And that was when everything broke.
I finished the recording.
For several minutes, I couldn’t move.
The pain I felt was complicated.
I was angry.
But not at my father.
Not anymore.
He had protected me the only way he knew how.
I was angry because I spent years believing I was alone.
I wasn’t.
My father had been preparing me.
Even after he was gone.
The next morning, I called Adrian.
He arrived within twenty minutes.
When he entered my office, I noticed something.
He looked nervous.
Not about losing his company.
Not about his reputation.
About what I had heard.
“You listened.””
“Yes.””
He sat down.
“How much?””
“Everything.””
His eyes lowered.
For once, he didn’t try to explain himself.
Good.
Because explanations had become his favorite escape.
“You knew Morgan was using you.””
His voice was quiet.
“I suspected.””
“But you continued.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Why?””
He looked at the floor.
“Because part of me wanted him to be right.””
I said nothing.
“I wanted to believe I was the victim.””
He looked up.
“I wanted someone to tell me that my failures weren’t my fault.””
That was the first time Adrian had ever admitted his weakness.
Not the weakness he pretended was strength.
The real one.
“I was so angry at you.””
His voice cracked.
“Because every time I looked at you, I felt like I wasn’t enough.””
I studied him.
“And instead of becoming better, you tried to make me smaller.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
That answer mattered.
Because finally, he understood.
I stood.
“Morgan wants control.””
Adrian nodded.
“He has been building this for years.””
“Then we stop him.””
He looked surprised.
“We?””
I stared at him.
“Don’t misunderstand.””
His expression fell slightly.
“This is not forgiveness.””
“I know.””
“This is not us.””
“I know.””
“Then what is it?””
I looked at the man I once loved.
“It is me protecting what belongs to me.””
He nodded.
And for the first time in years, Adrian accepted my power without trying to compete with it.
Morgan moved quickly.
Within days, he launched his final attack.
A group of investors announced their intention to challenge Ashcroft Holdings’ control over Vale Meridian.
The media called it a corporate war.
They were wrong.
It was personal.
Morgan wanted revenge.
Not money.
Not influence.
Revenge.
Because my father had defeated him decades ago.
And now he wanted to destroy everything my father built.
But Morgan made one mistake.
May you like
He underestimated the person my father spent years preparing.
Me.
