Chapter 11: The Fall Of The Man Who Wanted Everything

The media storm began before sunrise.

For years, Adrian Vale had controlled his public image.

He knew which interviews to give.

Which charities to support.

Which stories to tell.

But now the story belonged to someone else.

Not the powerful CEO.

The disgraced executive accused of financial misconduct.

Not the visionary leader.

The man who secretly redirected company resources.

Not the self-made billionaire.

The man who built his reputation on someone else’s foundation.

I watched the news from my office.

The anchor spoke carefully.

“Vale Meridian Group has announced an internal investigation following allegations involving former CEO Adrian Vale.””

They did not know everything yet.

But they knew enough.

My phone rang.

Adrian.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“What do you want?””

His voice was different.

The arrogance was gone.

“Can we talk?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Eleanor.””

I closed my eyes.

Because hearing him say my name like that reminded me of another time.

A time before everything broke.

“What do you want?””

“I need your help.””

I laughed quietly.

“Of course you do.””

“I’m serious.””

“So am I.””

Silence.

Then he said:

“I know I hurt you.””

I waited.

“I know I destroyed everything.””

Still, I waited.

“But I never wanted this.””

That sentence told me everything.

“You never wanted consequences.””

“No.””

“You wanted forgiveness.””

He didn’t answer.

Because he did.

Adrian wanted the pain to disappear.

He wanted the world to forget.

But some things could not be undone.

“You know what hurts the most?”” I asked.

He was silent.

“You think the worst thing you did was cheating.””

His breathing changed.

“It wasn’t.””

I looked out the window.

“The worst thing you did was proving that everything I gave you meant nothing.””

“Eleanor—”

“I protected you.””

My voice became quieter.

“I defended you.””

“I loved you.””

A pause.

“And you looked at all of that and decided it was weakness.””

His voice cracked.

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

I answered immediately.

“You were.””

He was silent.

That surprised him.

Maybe he expected me to comfort him.

Maybe he expected me to say he was still a good person.

But I was done protecting people from the truth.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

For the first time, I believed he meant it.

But regret arrived too late.

“I hope someday you understand why you lost everything.””

I ended the call.

Later that afternoon, Rebecca appeared at my office.

No security announcement.

No appointment.

Just like Adrian.

People who once had access to your life always struggled when the door closed.

“You’re enjoying this.””

I looked up.

“No.””

She walked closer.

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

I closed my laptop.

“I never wanted either of you to fall.””

Rebecca laughed.

“You wanted power.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I wanted peace.””

That answer confused her.

Because people like Rebecca believed everyone wanted what she wanted.

Control.

Recognition.

Victory.

But I had spent my entire life trying to escape those things.

“Why did you really do it?””

Her expression changed.

For a moment, she looked tired.

“Because I was tired of being invisible.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not greed.

Not money.

Pain.

But pain had turned into jealousy.

Jealousy had turned into betrayal.

And betrayal had consequences.

“You could have come to me.””

She looked away.

“Would you have listened?””

I thought about it.

“Yes.””

That seemed to hurt her more.

Because deep down, she knew it.

She never gave me the chance.

She decided my answer before asking the question.

Rebecca left quietly.

But before she reached the door, she stopped.

“There’s something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“The reason Adrian was chosen wasn’t only because of leadership.””

My expression changed.

“Then why?””

She looked back.

“Because your father was afraid someone would come after you.””

The room became still.

“Someone like who?””

Rebecca’s eyes hardened.

“I don’t know.””

Then she left.

And I realized something terrifying.

My father wasn’t just preparing for Adrian.

He was preparing for a threat bigger than him.
