Chapter 8: The Evidence Hidden in the Family Photos

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

I had barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Maya standing at the bottom of the stairs.

Waiting.

Wondering.

Hoping someone would choose her.

I walked downstairs quietly.

The house was dark.

For years, I had loved this house because it felt full.

Now every room felt like it was holding secrets.

I walked into the living room.

The photographs from my birthday were still there.

Isaiah’s pictures.

The ones Maya had been excited to see.

I picked up the first one.

It was old.

Maya was six years old.

She was sitting on my shoulders at a camping trip.

Her mother, Elena, was standing beside us.

All three of us were covered in dirt and smiling.

A real smile.

The kind you don’t have to create.

I looked at the picture for a long time.

Then I understood something.

Tara never hated Maya.

Not at first.

She hated the history Maya represented.

A history she could never replace.

The sound of footsteps made me turn.

Maya stood in the doorway.

“You’re awake.””

“So are you.””

She shrugged.

“I couldn’t sleep.””

I held out the picture.

She smiled faintly.

“I remember that trip.””

“You do?””

“You burned the pancakes.””

I laughed.

“I did not burn them.””

“You absolutely did.””

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Then her smile disappeared.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Are we leaving?””

The question stopped me.

“What?””

“Are we leaving this house?””

I walked toward her.

“No.””

“But if she wants it…”

I shook my head.

“No one decides where you belong except us.””

She nodded.

But I knew she was still afraid.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Good morning.””

“Marcus, I found something.””

I straightened.

“What?””

“A financial transfer.””

“From who?””

“Tara.””

“To where?””

He paused.

“A separate account.””

“How much?””

“Over the last eighteen months?””

I waited.

“Nearly sixty thousand dollars.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where did it come from?””

“Your household account.””

I closed my eyes.

“Maya.””

She looked at me.

“What happened?””

I covered the phone.

“I need to take this.””

She nodded.

I walked into the hallway.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“Marcus, I want you to understand something.””

“What?””

“This may not only be about your marriage.””

“What do you mean?””

“There are signs she was preparing financially.””

I looked back toward the kitchen.

Toward the room where Tara and I had shared coffee every morning.

“Preparing for what?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Leaving.””

The word felt heavier than I expected.

Leaving.

All this time, I thought Tara wanted to remove Maya from my life.

Maybe she wanted to remove herself after taking what she wanted.

“Can you trace the account?””

“We’re working on it.””

“Who has access?””

“That’s the strange part.””

“What?””

“The account has a secondary authorization.””

“Whose?””

I waited.

“Your sister’s.””

My chest tightened.

“Renee?””

“Yes.””

I sat down.

Again.

Another person.

Another secret.

“Why would Renee be connected?””

“I don’t know.””

I ended the call.

Then I found Renee’s number.

Before I called, the front door opened.

Tara walked in.

She looked exhausted.

“I stayed at a hotel.””

I said nothing.

“I needed space.””

I looked at her.

“You had space.””

She frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“You had years of space.””

She looked hurt.

“Marcus.””

I held up the bank records.

Her expression changed.

“What is that?””

“Your transfers.””

She went silent.

“I can explain.””

“Please do.””

She looked away.

“I was saving.””

“Money from our account?””

“For security.””

“Whose security?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Whose?””

Finally she whispered:

“Mine.””

The honesty shocked me.

Not because I didn’t expect it.

Because she didn’t seem ashamed.

She seemed justified.

“You were planning to leave me.””

“No.””

“Then why save money secretly?””

“Because I knew you would never understand.””

“Understand what?””

She looked at me.

“That I was always alone.””

I stared.

“You had a family.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I had your family.””

The words hurt.

Because they revealed the truth.

She never saw herself as part of us.

She saw herself as someone trying to take a place that already belonged to someone else.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Isaiah.

I opened it.

Attached was a photo.

A photo from the birthday dinner.

My eyes narrowed.

It showed Tara standing near the stairs before she told Maya to go upstairs.

But behind her was something else.

A folder.

On the counter.

A folder I recognized.

The same folder containing the documents.

Isaiah added one sentence:

*Marcus, I think you need to know who else was there before everyone arrived.*

I zoomed in.

And my heart stopped.

May you like

Because standing beside Tara in the photo...

was Renee.
