Chapter 19: The Account That Carried Elena’s Name
For several seconds after Daniel spoke, I forgot how to respond.
Not because I didn’t understand the words.
Because I couldn’t make them fit inside reality.
An account under Elena’s name.
Elena had been gone for years.
The woman who had written letters to me.
The woman who had left every piece of her heart behind for Maya.
The woman whose last wish was to protect our daughter.
How could her name be connected to something happening now?
“Daniel.””
“Yes?””
“Say that again.””
He was quiet.
“I found an account registered under Elena Hayes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
“Her identity?””
“We’re verifying.””
I stood and walked toward the window.
The backyard was quiet.
The same backyard where Maya used to run around when she was little.
The same place where Elena took pictures of her every summer.
Everything about my life felt like it was being pulled apart and examined.
“What is the account used for?””
“We don’t know yet.””
“Then why call me?””
“Because the first activity happened shortly before you met Tara.””
My stomach tightened.
“What activity?””
“A financial inquiry.””
“About me?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
The timeline was becoming clear.
Before Tara.
Before the marriage.
Before the promises.
She had been looking into my life.
But why use Elena’s name?
“Who opened it?””
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””
“Can you find out?””
“Yes.””
I hung up.
But I didn’t feel relieved.
I felt afraid.
Because every answer created another question.
When I walked into the kitchen, Maya immediately looked up.
“What happened?””
I forced myself to stay calm.
“Daniel found something strange.””
“What kind of strange?””
I sat across from her.
“Something connected to your mom.””
Her expression changed.
Not fear.
Hope.
That hurt.
Because I knew I couldn’t give her the one thing she wanted.
I couldn’t bring Elena back.
“What about Mom?””
I chose my words carefully.
“There may be an account connected to her name.””
Maya frowned.
“An account?””
“Yes.””
“Like money?””
“Yes.””
She became quiet.
“My mom had money?””
“Some.””
“For me?””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“She was still taking care of me.””
The sentence nearly broke me.
Because Elena had been taking care of her even after she was gone.
I reached across the table.
“She never stopped.””
Maya smiled sadly.
“I miss her.””
“I do too.””
For a moment, we just sat there.
Then Maya asked:
“Do you think Tara knew?””
The question surprised me.
Not because it was impossible.
Because I was starting to realize how much Maya understood.
“I don’t know.””
“But?””
“But I think she knew something.””
Maya nodded.
“I think so too.””
That afternoon, Daniel called again.
This time, he asked me to come in.
When I arrived, there were two additional people in the office.
A forensic accountant.
And a woman from the bank.
“This is Melissa Grant,” Daniel said.
She nodded.
“Mr. Hayes.””
“Can someone please explain what’s happening?””
Melissa opened a folder.
“The account was created eight years ago.””
My chest tightened.
Eight years.
Before Elena died.
“By who?””
She looked at me.
“Your wife.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Tara opened the account using documentation connected to Elena Hayes.””
I stared.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“No.””
Melissa nodded.
“It doesn’t.””
“How?””
“We’re investigating.””
I sat down slowly.
“She used Elena’s information?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel answered.
“That is what we need to uncover.””
I looked at the documents.
There was Tara’s signature.
My hands tightened.
“What was the account for?””
Melissa turned the page.
“At first, it appeared inactive.””
“And later?””
“After Elena’s death, activity began.””
My stomach dropped.
“After?””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
She hesitated.
“Approximately ninety thousand dollars moved through the account.””
The room went silent.
“Ninety thousand?””
“Yes.””
“Where did it come from?””
The accountant answered.
“Several sources.””
“Which were?””
“Insurance-related funds.””
I felt sick.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
I stood.
“That money was supposed to go to Maya.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
The same pattern.
Again.
Money connected to my daughter.
Someone else making decisions.
Someone else controlling access.
I looked at the documents.
“Tara stole from Maya.””
Daniel spoke carefully.
“We need to establish intent.””
I looked at him.
“Intent?””
“Yes.””
“She used my dead wife’s information.””
“I understand.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t.””
I pointed at the paperwork.
“This wasn’t just money.””
I swallowed.
“This was Elena’s last gift to our daughter.””
The accountant looked down.
Nobody said anything.
When I returned home, Tara was sitting on the porch.
She knew.
I didn’t ask how.
She always knew when something changed.
“You found it.””
I stopped.
“You knew.””
She looked away.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“How long?””
She didn’t answer.
“How long did you know about this account?””
“Since before we married.””
The world went quiet.
“Before we married?””
“Yes.””
I stared.
“You knew about Elena’s money.””
“Yes.””
“And you opened an account using her name?””
She looked at me.
“I was trying to protect myself.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to protect yourself from me.””
She started crying.
“I was afraid.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
I stepped closer.
“Fear does not explain everything.””
She looked at me.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
I looked toward the house.
“Mistakes happen once.””
I pointed at the documents.
“This was a choice.””
She had no answer.
May you like
And for the first time...
neither did I.
