Chapter 6: The Woman Who Wanted Me to Choose

I didn’t show Tara the message from Daniel.

Not yet.

For the first time in years, I understood something important.

Information was power.

And I had spent too long giving mine away.

“I need some time,” I said.

Tara looked at me.

“Time?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

“To think.””

She laughed softly.

“You’re acting like I’m some stranger.””

I looked at her.

Maybe that was the hardest part.

She wasn’t a stranger.

She was someone I had loved.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone I had invited into the most fragile part of my life.

My daughter.

“I need to understand what happened to us.””

Her face softened.

For a second, I saw the woman I married.

And that almost made it harder.

“Marcus…”

I looked away.

Because I couldn’t let one emotional moment erase everything I had learned.

“I’m going upstairs.””

She grabbed my arm.

Not violently.

But firmly.

The same way she had at the birthday dinner.

The same way she tried to control the direction of every conversation.

“Don’t walk away.””

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

She released me.

Slowly.

“I’m sorry.””

I nodded.

But I wasn’t sure what she was sorry for.

Hurting me?

Getting caught?

Or losing control?

Upstairs, I found Maya sitting by her window.

She was watching the backyard.

The place where everyone had gathered the night before.

“The party is still here,” she said.

I stood beside her.

“What do you mean?””

“The decorations.””

She smiled sadly.

“It looks like something happy happened.””

I looked outside.

She was right.

From a distance, everything looked perfect.

That was the terrifying thing about families.

Sometimes the outside remains beautiful long after the inside has fallen apart.

“I’m sorry.””

Maya looked at me.

“You already said that.””

“I know.””

I sat beside her.

“But I mean it differently now.””

She waited.

“I’m sorry I believed explanations instead of noticing patterns.””

Her eyes filled.

“Dad…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t need to protect me.””

She looked down.

“I was scared.””

“I know.””

“She made me feel like if I told you, I would destroy everything.””

I swallowed.

“She was wrong.””

“Was she?””

The question hurt.

Because it was honest.

I took a deep breath.

“Yes.””

I looked at my daughter.

“Because anything that requires you to disappear was never something worth protecting.””

She wiped her eyes.

For the first time in days, she smiled a little.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Is this Marcus Hayes?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Olivia Carter.””

I frowned.

“I’m sorry, who?””

“I worked with your wife.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

“At the company she used to consult for.””

“Why are you calling me?””

There was a pause.

Then:

“Because I think you deserve to know why she married you.””

I stood up.

Maya looked at me.

“What?””

I covered the phone.

“I don’t know.””

Then I returned.

“What are you talking about?””

Olivia lowered her voice.

“I don’t want to make accusations.””

“Then tell me facts.””

“I saw documents.””

“What documents?””

“Your financial records.””

My heart started racing.

“What about them?””

“She was studying your assets before your wedding.””

I closed my eyes.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I wish it was.””

I looked at Maya.

My daughter was watching me.

Waiting.

“Why tell me now?””

“Because I saw your birthday pictures online.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

“Because I saw your daughter.””

Silence.

“She looked uncomfortable.””

My throat tightened.

“And?””

“And I remembered something.””

“What?””

Olivia’s voice became quiet.

“Your wife once told me something I never forgot.””

I waited.

“She said marrying you was the easiest way to become part of a wealthy family.””

The room went silent.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

Then Olivia said the words that changed everything.

“But Marcus…”

I gripped the phone.

“What?””

“She wasn’t planning to stay your wife forever.””

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

“What does that mean?””

A pause.

Then:

“It means you need to check who benefits if your marriage ends.””

The call ended.

I stood there.

Frozen.

Maya looked terrified.

“Dad?””

I looked at her.

And I knew.

The truth wasn’t just that Tara had pushed my daughter away.

The truth was much bigger.

She had been planning a future.

May you like

A future where she had everything.

And where Maya and I had nothing.
