Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Test

After the speech ended, employees gathered around Ethan.

Some apologized.

Some congratulated him.

Some simply stood quietly, embarrassed by what they had witnessed.

But Ethan avoided the attention.

He found Lupita near the service hallway.

"May I speak with you?""

The older woman smiled.

"Of course.""

"You protected me last night.""

She shook her head.

"I protected your daughter.""

Ethan smiled.

"That's exactly why.""

He reached into his pocket.

Not for money.

Not for a reward.

He pulled out a small photograph.

Lupita looked at it.

It was Ethan, Sarah, and a baby Lily.

"My wife took this picture.""

Lupita smiled.

"She looks happy.""

"She was.""

A moment passed.

"Thank you for reminding me there are still people like you.""

Lupita touched his arm.

"Your wife would be proud.""

That sentence almost broke him.

Because everyone told him Sarah would be proud.

But hearing it from someone who knew nothing about his wealth made it feel real.

Later, Ethan met with Richard in his private office.

"How many complaints have we received about the front desk team?""

Richard hesitated.

"Several.""

"And?""

"We handled them internally.""

Ethan looked out the window.

"That's the problem.""

Richard understood.

"You want a deeper review.""

"I want a culture review.""

Ethan turned around.

"Not just this hotel.""

"Every property.""

Richard nodded.

"Understood.""

Then Ethan noticed a file on the desk.

"What's that?""

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"A staffing report.""

Ethan opened it.

His eyes stopped.

"Lupita has worked here twelve years?""

"Yes.""

"And she has never been promoted?""

Richard sighed.

"She never applied.""

"Why?""

"She said she didn't want a position where she couldn't help guests directly.""

Ethan smiled.

"Then maybe we should create a position that allows her to do both.""

Richard looked surprised.

"You want to promote her?""

"I want to recognize what she already is.""

"What?""

"A leader.""

Meanwhile, across town, news of Ethan's appearance had begun spreading among hotel employees.

Not publicly.

Not online.

Just quietly.

The owner had walked in unnoticed.

The owner had been judged.

The owner had remembered.

And everyone wondered what would happen next.

But Ethan had one more reason for coming to Chicago.

One reason nobody knew.

That evening, after Lily fell asleep, Ethan sat alone in the hotel suite.

He opened an old envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Sarah's handwriting.

The letter she had written months before she died.

The one he had never been brave enough to read completely.

His hands shook slightly as he unfolded it.

"My dear Ethan...""

He stopped.

Every word felt like opening a wound.

But he continued.

"If you are reading this, it means I am not there beside you anymore.""

His eyes filled.

"I know you will try to become stronger. I know you will try to protect Lily. But please remember something...""

He swallowed.

"Don't let losing me make you lose yourself.""

Ethan closed his eyes.

Three years.

Three years of surviving.

Three years of building walls around his heart.

Sarah had known him better than anyone.

The letter continued.

"Promise me you will always notice the people others ignore.""

"Promise me you will always choose kindness when you have the power not to.""

Ethan looked toward the sleeping child.

The reason he had kept going.

The reason he had changed.

The reason he had never stopped trying.

And suddenly, he understood.

The test at the hotel was never about exposing rude employees.

It was about whether he had remained the man Sarah loved.

The next morning, Ethan called an emergency leadership meeting.

But before he entered the room, he received a message.

A message that changed everything.

A former employee had contacted him.

A former employee who claimed there was something happening inside the Grand Regent Hotel that even Ethan didn't know about.

Something involving missing money.

False reports.

And a betrayal coming from someone he trusted.

Ethan stared at the message.

The hotel problem was bigger than one receptionist.

May you like

Much bigger.

And now, the man everyone underestimated was about to uncover the truth hiding behind the luxury walls of the Grand Regent.
