Chapter 11: The Relative Who Wanted Everything

Ethan had spent years believing enemies came from outside.

Competitors.

Investors.

People who wanted what he built.

But he had never prepared for the possibility that the biggest threat shared his blood.

"Who?"" Ethan asked again.

Margaret looked at him.

"I need you to understand something.""

"What?""

"Your father.""

The words felt impossible.

Ethan stared.

"My father died ten years ago.""

"I know.""

"Then what are you saying?""

Margaret took a breath.

"Your father's brother.""

Ethan froze.

His uncle.

Charles Vance.

The man who disappeared from his life after a family argument years ago.

Ethan hadn't heard his name in almost a decade.

"Charles?""

Margaret nodded.

"He believed your father made the wrong choice.""

"What choice?""

"Leaving the company to you.""

Ethan laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

"My father gave me the company because I worked for it.""

"Charles didn't see it that way.""

Margaret opened a file.

Inside were old emails.

Messages.

Documents.

Ethan read them.

The first message was from Charles.

The boy has ambition, but ambition is not leadership.

Another:

When the right moment comes, the company will return to where it belongs.

Ethan felt sick.

"This was years ago.""

"Yes.""

"Before Sarah got sick.""

Margaret nodded.

"Charles had been planning for a long time.""

The investigation changed completely.

Victor wasn't the mastermind.

Thomas wasn't the mastermind.

They were pieces.

Useful people.

People with weaknesses.

People Charles could manipulate.

Ethan spent the next two days rebuilding the timeline.

Five years ago.

Charles began contacting executives.

Four years ago.

Victor started moving money.

Three years ago.

Sarah discovered the problem.

Two years ago.

Claire was removed.

One year ago.

Thomas expanded the system.

It was not random.

It was a strategy.

Slow.

Patient.

Calculated.

Someone had been waiting.

That evening, Ethan visited Charles.

The house was exactly what he expected.

Large.

Expensive.

Cold.

Charles opened the door.

And smiled.

"Ethan.""

No surprise.

That bothered him.

"You knew I would come.""

Charles stepped aside.

"I was wondering when you would finally ask questions.""

Ethan entered.

"Why?""

Charles poured himself a drink.

"Why what?""

"Why did you do this?""

Charles smiled.

"Do what?""

"Don't insult me.""

The older man looked at him.

"You always were emotional.""

Ethan stared.

"And you always were arrogant.""

For the first time, Charles looked annoyed.

"Your father was weak.""

Ethan's expression hardened.

"Don't talk about him.""

"He gave everything away.""

"He built something.""

"He handed it to you.""

"Because he believed in me.""

Charles laughed.

"That's the difference between us.""

"What?""

"I saw reality.""

Charles stepped closer.

"You were his favorite.""

Ethan said nothing.

"You were always the one everyone admired.""

There it was.

Not anger.

Jealousy.

"You think this was about money.""

Charles shook his head.

"It was about respect.""

Ethan looked at him.

"You destroyed people because you wanted respect?""

"I spent my entire life watching your father choose you.""

The bitterness in his voice was obvious.

"And now I wanted something that should have been mine.""

Ethan stared.

"You ruined Sarah's final years.""

Charles looked away.

For a moment, guilt appeared.

Then vanished.

"She was intelligent.""

Ethan froze.

"What?""

"Sarah figured it out.""

The room became silent.

"She was dangerous.""

Ethan stepped forward.

"You knew she was investigating?""

Charles didn't answer.

That was enough.

Ethan felt something inside him break.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

"You knew.""

Charles looked at him.

"She made choices.""

Ethan's voice became quiet.

"What did you do?""

A pause.

Then Charles smiled slightly.

"I didn't do anything.""

Ethan knew that smile.

It was the smile of someone who believed he was untouchable.

And that was when Ethan realized.

Charles was not afraid.

May you like

Because he still had something.

Something Ethan didn't know.
