Chapter 10: The Secret Sarah Never Told Him

The hardest truths were never the ones hidden by strangers.

They were the ones buried by people you loved.

Ethan Vance sat alone in his office long after midnight, staring at the same photograph he had carried for three years.

Sarah.

A simple picture.

No expensive clothes.

No perfect lighting.

Just Sarah sitting on their old porch, smiling while holding baby Lily.

It was the kind of photo nobody else would consider valuable.

But to Ethan, it was priceless.

Because it represented a time before hospitals.

Before fear.

Before goodbyes.

Before he learned that a person could be alive one day and become only memories the next.

He kept hearing the caller's words.

*The same person who knew Sarah's condition before anyone else.*

Ethan hated the question forming in his mind.

Because if someone knew...

If someone had used Sarah's illness...

Then they hadn't just betrayed his company.

They had entered the most painful part of his life.

And Ethan didn't know if he was ready to face that.

A soft sound interrupted his thoughts.

"Daddy?""

He turned.

Lily stood in the doorway wearing her pajamas.

Her stuffed rabbit dragged behind her.

"You should be sleeping.""

She walked closer.

"So should you.""

Ethan smiled slightly.

"Fair point.""

She climbed onto the chair beside him.

"What are you looking at?""

"My mom.""

Lily looked at the picture.

"She looks happy.""

"She was.""

"Was she scared?""

The question caught him.

Children always found the doors adults tried hardest to lock.

"Sometimes.""

"About being sick?""

Ethan nodded.

"But she was brave.""

Lily touched the photo.

"She didn't want me to be sad.""

Ethan looked at her.

"Why do you say that?""

"Because before she went to heaven, she told me something.""

His heart stopped.

"Lily...""

"What did she tell you?""

The little girl thought carefully.

"She said Daddy would try to carry everything alone.""

Ethan lowered his eyes.

That was exactly what he had done.

"She said I had to remind you that families carry things together.""

A painful smile appeared on his face.

Even after death, Sarah still knew him.

Better than anyone.

The next morning, Ethan made a decision.

He needed answers.

Not from executives.

Not from employees.

From Sarah.

Or at least, from the pieces of her life he had not examined.

He went through old files.

Medical records.

Personal documents.

Letters.

Anything connected to the final year of her life.

Then he found something strange.

A folder he had never seen before.

The label was handwritten.

*For Ethan.*

His hands froze.

Sarah's handwriting.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

Not the same letter she had written before.

A different one.

A shorter one.

His heart raced.

Ethan,

If you are reading this, something has happened that made you search for answers.

I wish you never had to.

He stopped.

The room became quiet.

There are things I didn't tell you while I was sick.

Ethan felt his breathing change.

Not because I didn't trust you.

Because I knew you would try to fix everything.

His eyes filled.

She knew.

She always knew.

Before my diagnosis became public, I noticed strange things happening at Vance Hospitality.

Ethan stared.

Financial reports didn't match. Some contracts seemed unusual. I asked questions.

He read faster.

Victor told me everything was under control.

A cold feeling moved through him.

But I didn't believe him.

Ethan gripped the paper.

I was afraid telling you would make you abandon everything to investigate.

A tear fell.

And I couldn't let you lose the company and lose me at the same time.

He closed his eyes.

Sarah had known.

She had known something was wrong.

And she carried that burden alone.

The letter continued.

There is one person I trusted to watch over things while you were with me.

Ethan's heart began pounding.

Margaret.

He stopped.

Margaret.

The same name he feared.

But the next sentence changed everything.

She promised me she would protect you.

Ethan stared.

Something didn't make sense.

Sarah trusted Margaret.

But Margaret was connected to the betrayal.

Unless...

Unless the story was different.

Ethan immediately called Richard.

"I need everything on Margaret Ellis.""

Richard answered quickly.

"Again?""

"Not suspicion.""

Ethan looked at Sarah's letter.

"History.""

Within hours, Richard sent everything.

Employment records.

Financial reviews.

Performance reports.

Personal references.

And then Ethan found something.

Margaret's payments.

The hidden account.

They weren't coming from Victor.

They were going somewhere else.

The account receiving the money belonged to a private foundation.

A foundation Ethan recognized.

The Sarah Vance Children's Medical Fund.

His own charity.

Ethan stood.

"What?""

The money wasn't stolen.

It was transferred.

Not for personal gain.

For something else.

He called Margaret immediately.

She answered after one ring.

"Ethan.""

"I know about the account.""

Silence.

A long silence.

"You finally found it.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Her voice broke.

"Because Sarah asked me not to.""

The words hit him.

"What?""

"I promised her.""

An hour later, Margaret sat across from Ethan.

She looked older than she had before.

Not guilty.

Exhausted.

"I should have told you.""

"Yes.""

"I know.""

Ethan placed the documents down.

"Explain everything.""

Margaret took a breath.

"When Sarah discovered problems, she knew someone inside was manipulating accounts.""

"Victor?""

"Yes.""

"But she didn't know how far it went.""

Margaret looked down.

"She asked me to investigate quietly.""

Ethan listened.

"She knew you would destroy yourself trying to uncover it.""

He looked away.

"She was right.""

Margaret nodded sadly.

"She wanted you to spend your remaining time with her.""

Ethan swallowed.

"Then why did you hide it?""

"Because I found something worse.""

"What?""

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"Victor wasn't acting alone.""

The room went still.

"Who?""

Margaret hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Someone from your family.""

Ethan felt the air disappear.

"My family?""

May you like

Margaret nodded.

"Someone who believed the company should never have belonged to you.""
