Chapter 6: The Trial Before the Storm
The first court hearing was scheduled three weeks later.
Daniel arrived wearing confidence like armor.
He walked into the courtroom surrounded by expensive lawyers.
The same lawyers who once protected his company.
The same people who probably believed he would never fall.
When he saw me, he stopped.
I was wearing a simple black dress.
No designer labels.
No jewelry.
No attempt to impress anyone.
I didn't need to.
Because confidence didn't come from clothing.
It came from knowing the truth.
Daniel approached me.
"Emily.""
I looked at him.
"Daniel.""
His expression softened.
"You don't have to do this.""
I almost smiled.
"Do what?""
"Destroy everything.""
I stared at him.
"You destroyed everything first.""
His jaw tightened.
"You think your father will protect you forever?""
There it was.
The arrogance.
Even now.
Even here.
"You still don't understand.""
I stepped closer.
"My father isn't fighting for me.""
Daniel looked confused.
"Then what?""
I looked directly into his eyes.
"I'm fighting for myself.""
For the first time, Daniel had nothing to say.
The courtroom doors opened.
Everyone took their seats.
The judge entered.
The hearing began.
Daniel's lawyer presented their argument first.
They claimed I had abandoned the marriage.
They claimed I was unstable.
They claimed Daniel had legitimate concerns about my ability to raise our child.
Every lie felt like another knife.
But I remained silent.
Because I knew something they didn't.
The truth always had a way of appearing.
Then my father's attorney stood.
"Your Honor, we would like to introduce new evidence.""
The courtroom became quiet.
Documents were placed before the judge.
Emails.
Financial records.
Witness statements.
Then one name appeared.
Rachel Morgan.
Daniel's former assistant.
The courtroom doors opened.
Rachel walked inside.
Daniel's face changed completely.
Because he knew.
He knew his carefully built world was collapsing.
Rachel looked at him.
Not with fear.
With regret.
"I’m sorry, Mr. Ashford.""
Daniel whispered:
"You have no idea what you're doing.""
Rachel answered:
"Actually...""
She looked at me.
"I finally do.""
The judge reviewed the documents.
The atmosphere changed.
The lies that had protected Daniel for years were finally breaking apart.
But then Daniel's lawyer stood.
"Your Honor, we have evidence as well.""
My heart tightened.
He placed a file on the table.
"I believe this changes everything.""
The judge opened it.
And the expression on his face changed.
Everyone became silent.
My father's attorney looked concerned.
Daniel looked confident again.
For the first time in weeks, he smiled.
A small smile.
A dangerous smile.
Because whatever was inside that folder...
He believed it would save him.
And as I watched him sit back in his chair, I realized something.
The battle was not over.
Not even close.
May you like
Because Daniel Ashford had one final weapon.
And he was about to use it against me. :::
