Chapter 13: The Truth Behind My Father’s Silence

For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.

Daniel's words echoed through the phone.

"It's your father.""

Three words.

Three impossible words.

I looked across the room at Alexander Carter.

My father.

The man who came through the rain to protect me.

The man who held me when I thought my life was over.

The man who told me I was never alone.

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Say that again.""

Daniel's voice was low.

"I know how it sounds.""

"No.""

My voice trembled.

"Say exactly what you mean.""

A pause.

"Your father knew.""

The world suddenly felt unstable.

"Knew what?""

"Everything.""

I closed my eyes.

Because there was no way.

There couldn't be.

My father couldn't be the person behind all of this.

Not him.

Not the man who spent his entire life protecting our family.

"You're lying.""

Daniel didn't argue.

And somehow, that scared me more.

"I thought the same thing.""

My grip tightened.

"Then why tell me?""

"Because I found documents.""

"What documents?""

"Documents showing money transfers.""

I looked at my father.

He was watching me carefully.

"From your father to companies connected with Michael.""

My heart sank.

Daniel continued.

"He knew Michael was planning something.""

Silence.

"He knew someone inside Carter Global was moving against him.""

My voice became quiet.

"And he did nothing?""

Daniel answered after a long pause.

"I don't know.""

That was the first honest thing he had said.

"I only know what I found.""

I ended the call.

Not because I believed him.

Because I couldn't listen anymore.

My father immediately noticed my expression.

"What happened?""

I stared at him.

For the first time in my life...

I was afraid of the answer.

"Did you know about Michael?""

His face changed slightly.

That tiny movement.

That tiny hesitation.

It was enough.

My heart broke.

"You did.""

My father sat down slowly.

"Emily.""

"Did you know?""

He looked away.

And that hurt more than any confession.

"Yes.""

The room became silent.

I felt like I was falling.

"You knew my uncle was betraying you?""

"Yes.""

"And you let everything happen?""

"No.""

His answer came quickly.

"I didn't.""

"Then explain.""

My father closed his eyes.

For a moment, he wasn't the billionaire businessman.

He was just an exhausted man.

"I found out Michael was involved months ago.""

I stared at him.

"Months?""

"Yes.""

"Before Daniel threw me out?""

He nodded.

My heart broke even more.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was trying to protect you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Protect me?""

My voice rose.

"Daniel destroyed my life.""

My father looked hurt.

"I know.""

"You knew something was wrong, and you let me walk into that mansion every day?""

"I didn't know the full extent.""

"But you knew enough.""

The same words.

The same pain.

The same betrayal.

My father lowered his head.

And for the first time, I saw guilt.

"I made a mistake.""

I looked away.

Because hearing those words from Daniel had meant nothing.

But hearing them from my father...

Destroyed me.

"Why?""

My voice cracked.

"Why didn't you trust me?""

He looked at me.

"Because I was afraid.""

That answer surprised me.

"Afraid of what?""

"Losing you.""

I froze.

My father continued.

"When your mother died, I promised myself nothing would ever hurt you again.""

His voice became softer.

"But I became so focused on protecting you that I forgot something.""

"What?""

"That you weren't a child anymore.""

Tears filled my eyes.

"I spent years believing I could control every danger around you.""

He looked at the floor.

"But I couldn't.""

The anger inside me weakened.

Not disappeared.

But changed.

Because I realized something.

My father wasn't perfect.

He wasn't a hero from a story.

He was a human being who made mistakes.

But there was still one question.

"What about Daniel?""

My father became serious.

"I never approved of Daniel.""

That surprised me.

"What?""

"I saw his ambition.""

"Then why did you allow me to marry him?""

My father sighed.

"Because I wanted you to choose your own life.""

I looked at him.

"Even if you knew he wasn't right?""

"Yes.""

A pause.

"Because I knew if I forced you away, you would only run toward him harder.""

That was true.

I hated admitting it.

My father continued.

"But when I discovered what Daniel and Michael were planning, I started investigating.""

"Why didn't you stop them?""

"Because I needed proof.""

I shook my head.

"And I became collateral damage.""

The silence after those words was painful.

My father didn't defend himself.

Because he knew I was right.

That night, I left his office.

Not because I stopped loving him.

Because I needed time.

The next morning, something happened that changed everything.

Michael Carter disappeared.

No warning.

No message.

No explanation.

But before he vanished, he sent one final package.

To me.

Inside was a letter.

And one photograph.

A photograph of my mother.

Standing beside someone.

Someone I recognized immediately.

Daniel's father.

My blood went cold.

Because suddenly...

May you like

This wasn't a story that started with my marriage.

It started years before I was born.
