Chapter 2: The Secret Daughter Returns
Five minutes.
That was all it took.
Five minutes for my entire life to change.
I stood beneath the streetlight, holding my stomach and waiting.
At first, nothing happened.
Daniel probably thought I was gone.
Victoria probably believed she had won.
Maybe they were already celebrating inside the mansion.
Maybe they were drinking champagne in the dining room where Daniel and I once planned our future.
The thought should have destroyed me.
Instead, it gave me strength.
Because I finally understood something.
I had spent years protecting Daniel's image.
I had hidden my family's influence.
I had refused every offer from my father because I wanted a normal life.
I wanted love.
Not power.
Not money.
Not status.
Just love.
But Daniel never loved Emily Carter.
He loved the version of me that he thought was ordinary.
The moment he discovered my weakness, he attacked.
The moment he believed I had nothing, he abandoned me.
A low rumble suddenly echoed through the street.
I looked up.
Black luxury vehicles entered the neighborhood one after another.
Not one.
Not two.
Six.
The residents watching from their windows immediately became curious.
The vehicles stopped in front of me.
The doors opened.
Men in dark suits stepped out.
Not security guards.
Professionals.
The kind of people who carried authority without saying a word.
Then the final car door opened.
And my father stepped out.
Alexander Carter.
The man whose name appeared on the covers of every major business magazine.
The founder of Carter Global Holdings.
A billionaire.
A legend in the corporate world.
But to me, he was simply Dad.
He walked toward me without caring about the rain.
The moment he reached me, his expression changed.
The powerful businessman disappeared.
A worried father replaced him.
"Oh, Emily.""
That was all he said.
And I broke.
I fell into his arms.
For years, I had convinced myself I didn't need anyone.
But the truth was, sometimes the strongest people were the ones who finally allowed themselves to be protected.
"I'm sorry," I whispered.
My father held me tightly.
"You have nothing to apologize for.""
Behind us, the mansion doors opened.
Daniel stepped outside.
His confident expression was gone.
He looked from the luxury cars to the people surrounding me.
Then his eyes landed on my father.
The color drained from his face.
"Mr. Carter?""
My father slowly turned.
Daniel's voice became nervous.
"Emily... is your daughter?""
My father didn't answer immediately.
He looked at Daniel with disappointment.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
"Yes.""
One word.
But it changed everything.
Daniel stepped backward.
"No...""
Victoria appeared behind him.
"What is happening?""
She looked confused.
Then she saw my father.
Then the lawyers.
Then the vehicles.
Her confidence disappeared.
My father reached into the car and removed a thick black folder.
"I believe you should read this.""
Daniel didn't move.
"What is it?""
"A collection of documents.""
My father's voice was calm.
"Evidence of financial manipulation, hidden accounts, and violations committed by your company.""
Daniel's face changed.
"What are you talking about?""
The legal team stepped forward.
One of the attorneys opened another folder.
"Mr. Ashford, your company has been under investigation for several months.""
Daniel stared at them.
"This is impossible.""
"No," my father said quietly.
"What is impossible is believing you could destroy my daughter and walk away without consequences.""
Daniel looked at me.
For the first time that night, I saw fear in his eyes.
"Emily, wait...""
I looked at him.
The man who had pushed me into the rain.
The man who told me I was useless.
The man who believed I had no one.
"What?""
His voice softened.
"Can we talk?""
I almost laughed.
Talk?
After everything?
After he replaced me?
After he humiliated me?
"No, Daniel.""
The confidence in my own voice surprised me.
"We are done talking.""
Victoria stepped forward angrily.
"This is ridiculous. She manipulated you.""
My father looked at her.
Just one glance.
And she immediately became silent.
"Miss Hale," he said.
"Your involvement will also be reviewed.""
Her face went pale.
Daniel looked between us.
He finally understood.
The woman he threw away wasn't worthless.
May you like
She was the person who could have saved him.
Instead, he chose to destroy her.
