Chapter 19: The Woman Who Knew Who Pulled the Trigger

Marcus stared at the photograph.

Helen Brooks stood beside a tall man wearing a dark suit. His face was unfamiliar, but Marcus recognized the building behind them.

It was the old county courthouse.

On the back, Robert had written seven words:

*Helen knows who really killed James.*

Marcus looked at Samuel.

"Who is this man?""

Samuel examined the photograph.

His face drained of color.

"That's Judge Harold Mitchell.""

Ethan frowned.

"The judge who supposedly issued my fake warrant?""

Samuel nodded.

"But Mitchell retired three years ago.""

"Then why was he with Helen?""

Samuel looked toward the operating room.

"Because he wasn't just a judge.""

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

"What was he?""

Samuel lowered his voice.

"Richard's closest friend.""

Daniel stood.

"You're saying Helen knew the man who helped Richard?""

Samuel nodded.

"And she knew what happened to James.""

Marcus grabbed his jacket.

"We're going back to the farm.""

Daniel caught his arm.

"Robert is still in surgery.""

"I know.""

"Then don't leave him.""

Marcus looked through the glass doors.

"Richard shot him because he was trying to tell us the truth. We can't let that truth disappear again.""

Elizabeth stepped forward.

"Go. I'll stay here with him.""

Marcus looked at her.

"If he wakes up—"

"I'll call you immediately.""

He nodded.

Then he turned to Samuel.

"You're coming with me.""

Samuel didn't argue.

They drove back to Helen's farm just after midnight.

The porch light was on.

Helen sat in the kitchen, holding a photograph in both hands.

When Marcus entered, she looked up.

"How is Robert?""

"Alive. The doctors stabilized him.""

Helen closed her eyes.

"Thank God.""

Marcus placed the photograph on the table.

"Who is this?""

Helen looked at it.

For a moment, she didn't speak.

Then she whispered:

"Harold Mitchell.""

"Samuel says he was Richard's closest friend.""

Helen nodded.

"He was.""

"Why were you with him?""

She looked toward the window.

"Because I was trying to save James.""

Marcus pulled out a chair.

"Tell me everything.""

Helen folded her hands.

"Twenty years ago, James came to this house with a little boy. You were sleeping in his arms. He told Robert that Richard had discovered the children and was coming after them.""

Marcus listened.

"James said he needed to disappear. He asked Robert to help him create a new identity.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard had people watching the hospital, the police, and the courts. James believed the only way to protect you was to make everyone think he was dead.""

Samuel lowered his head.

Helen continued.

"But Richard found out.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"What happened?""

"James was supposed to meet Robert at Miller's Creek. Harold Mitchell arranged the meeting because he claimed he could help them get the original partnership papers out of Richard's hands.""

Samuel looked up.

"That was the night James died.""

Helen nodded.

"Richard arrived first. He had a gun. Robert tried to get James away, but Harold blocked the road.""

Marcus stared at the photograph.

"Did Harold shoot him?""

Helen's eyes filled.

"No.""

She looked directly at Marcus.

"I did.""

Silence filled the kitchen.

Samuel stepped backward.

Marcus couldn't move.

Helen's voice trembled.

"Richard had his gun pointed at James. I was hiding behind the old bridge. I saw Harold reach into his coat, and I thought he was going to shoot Robert.""

She wiped her eyes.

"I fired. But the bullet hit James.""

Marcus stood.

"No.""

"I didn't know it was him. It was dark. I heard him fall, and Richard started shouting. By the time I reached him, James was already bleeding.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Why didn't you tell us?""

"Because Richard told me he'd make sure you went to prison for murder. He said he'd tell the world that I had killed James because I wanted the partnership for myself.""

Samuel looked at her.

"You let us believe Richard killed him.""

"I let you believe what kept you alive.""

Marcus stared at the woman who had protected him for years.

"Did James know it was you?""

Helen nodded slowly.

"He looked at me before he died. He told me not to blame myself.""

Marcus sat down.

Helen continued.

"Robert took his body away. He arranged for someone else to be buried in the grave. Then he disappeared because Richard believed he had the original documents.""

Marcus looked at Samuel.

"Why didn't Robert tell me?""

"Because he was trying to protect Helen too," Samuel replied.

Helen reached across the table.

"Marcus, I loved James. I never wanted to hurt him.""

Marcus looked at her hand but didn't take it.

"I need some time.""

Helen nodded.

"I understand.""

Before anyone could speak again, a vehicle stopped outside.

Headlights swept across the kitchen windows.

Daniel entered through the back door.

"We've got a problem.""

Marcus stood.

"What?""

"Richard's been released.""

Samuel's face hardened.

"That's impossible.""

"Not according to the hospital security officer. Someone posted bail through a private attorney.""

Marcus grabbed his phone.

"Where is he?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Nobody knows.""

Then Ethan called.

Marcus answered immediately.

"What's happening?""

Ethan's voice was urgent.

"Robert woke up.""

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

"Is he all right?""

"He's conscious. But he asked for you.""

Marcus turned toward the door.

"Tell him I'm coming.""

Ethan hesitated.

"Marcus, there's something else.""

"What?""

"Before the doctors moved him, Robert gave me a key. He said it opens the partnership vault.""

Marcus looked at Samuel.

"Where is the vault?""

Samuel answered quietly.

"Under the old storage building at Miller's Creek.""

Marcus returned to the table.

Helen stood.

"Then we need to go.""

Marcus looked at her.

"You've already done enough.""

Helen didn't flinch.

"No. I kept quiet for twenty years. I'm not doing it anymore.""

Samuel picked up the photograph.

"We'll need the original agreement.""

Marcus took the key from Daniel.

"Then let's finish this.""

They reached the old storage building before dawn.

The structure stood on a piece of land hidden behind a line of trees. Its metal doors were rusted, and weeds covered the concrete steps.

Samuel pointed toward the back wall.

"The entrance is beneath the floor.""

Daniel and Ethan moved several old crates.

Underneath them was a metal hatch.

Marcus inserted the key.

It turned.

A heavy lock clicked.

The hatch opened.

Inside was a narrow staircase leading down into darkness.

At the bottom sat a steel door.

Marcus pushed it open.

The room beyond was filled with filing cabinets, wooden boxes, and shelves of old ledgers.

At the center stood a large safe.

Samuel stared.

"Robert found it.""

Marcus approached the safe.

A small note was taped to the door.

*For the person who finally chooses truth over blood.*

Marcus recognized Robert's handwriting.

He inserted the key.

The safe opened.

Inside were partnership agreements, property deeds, photographs, and a thick envelope marked with Helen's name.

She took it with shaking hands.

Inside was an original document bearing six signatures.

Robert Brooks.

James Reed.

Thomas Carter.

Samuel Brooks.

Richard Voss.

And Helen Brooks.

The agreement established Helen as the primary trustee and lifetime beneficiary of the Brooks land.

But beneath the agreement was another document.

A signed confession from Richard.

It detailed the fraudulent transfers, the forged signatures, and the arrangement with Harold Mitchell.

Marcus read the final paragraph.

Then he looked up.

"There's something else.""

He held out the page.

Richard had written that James's death was not an accident.

He had ordered the killing.

But the name of the person who fired the fatal shot was different from the name Helen had given.

The confession identified Harold Mitchell as the shooter.

Helen covered her mouth.

Marcus stared at her.

"Richard knew you would blame yourself.""

A sound came from behind them.

Slow clapping.

They turned.

Richard Voss stood in the doorway.

He held a gun.

"Beautiful speech," he said.

Samuel stepped forward.

"Richard, it's over.""

Richard smiled.

"Not quite.""

He raised the weapon toward Helen.

"Give me the confession.""

Marcus moved between them.

"You're not taking anything.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Then perhaps you'll finally learn what happens when you interfere with family.""

A voice came from the stairs.

"Put the gun down, Richard.""

Everyone turned.

Robert stood at the top of the staircase, leaning heavily on a cane.

He was pale, exhausted, and still wearing a hospital gown beneath his coat.

But he was alive.

Richard stared at him.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Robert descended one step.

"You've taken enough from us.""

Richard raised his gun.

Robert didn't stop.

May you like

"Now everyone gets to hear the truth.""

And from somewhere above them came the sound of sirens.
