Chapter 14: The Signature That Exposed Everything
Marcus didn't move.
Deputy Benson held the warrant in front of him.
"Hands where I can see them.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"That document is fraudulent.""
Benson turned toward him.
"Do you want to join him?""
Ethan approached slowly.
"Deputy, I'd like to see the issuing judge's signature.""
Benson lowered the paper.
"You don't have any authority here.""
"Neither do you if that warrant is fabricated.""
The deputy's expression hardened.
Marcus looked toward Helen.
"What did you mean about the death certificate?""
Helen was trembling.
"I saw Benson sign it.""
Benson turned sharply.
"Mrs. Brooks, you're confused.""
"No.""
Her voice was stronger now.
"I remember because Robert was still alive when you came here with those papers.""
Benson stared at her.
Helen continued.
"You told us the county needed a statement about Samuel's death. You brought a certificate and asked Robert to sign as a witness.""
Marcus looked at Samuel.
"Did that happen?""
Samuel nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
Helen looked at Benson.
"You signed the bottom of the document. I remember your name because you said it was your first week working for the sheriff's department.""
Benson's face changed.
Marcus noticed.
"Deputy, how long have you been working for the county?""
Benson said nothing.
Ethan examined the warrant.
Then he looked at the date.
"This warrant was issued yesterday.""
"That's right," Benson replied.
Ethan pointed to the judge's signature.
"By Judge Harold Mitchell?""
"Yes.""
"Judge Mitchell retired three years ago.""
Benson's smile vanished.
Daniel took out his phone.
"I'm recording this.""
Benson looked toward the road.
For the first time, he appeared uncertain.
Then he reached for Marcus.
"Enough. Turn around.""
Marcus caught his wrist.
"Don't.""
The deputy pulled away.
Samuel stepped forward, and Benson's hand moved toward his weapon.
A voice suddenly rang out from the farmhouse.
"Put your hands up, Carl!""
Everyone turned.
A woman stood on the porch.
She was holding a phone in one hand and a small black pistol in the other.
Helen gasped.
"Margaret?""
Margaret stepped down.
Her face was bruised, and her coat was torn.
But she was alive.
Benson stared at her.
"How did you get here?""
Margaret smiled bitterly.
"Your friend made a mistake.""
She raised the phone.
"Everything you said in that warehouse is recorded.""
Benson's face went pale.
Samuel rushed toward her.
"Are you hurt?""
"Not badly.""
He reached for her, but she stepped away.
"Don't touch me yet, Samuel.""
He stopped.
Marcus looked at Margaret.
"Where have you been?""
"Richard took me to the warehouse. He wanted to know where Catherine's letters were.""
"Did you tell him?""
"No.""
She looked at Benson.
"But Carl was there too.""
Benson's expression hardened.
"That's enough.""
Margaret pressed a button on her phone.
A recorded voice came through the speaker.
Richard Voss.
"Make sure Marcus gets arrested. I want him out of the way before Elizabeth learns what happened to Catherine.""
Then Benson's voice answered.
"What about the old woman?""
Richard laughed.
"She's not important. Once the farm is transferred, she can live wherever she wants.""
The recording continued.
"Don't worry about the paperwork. Gregory has already taken care of the signatures.""
Benson lunged toward Margaret.
Daniel moved faster.
He caught the deputy's arm and pushed him against the side of the cruiser.
"Don't even think about it.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Where's Richard?""
Benson clenched his jaw.
"You're making a serious mistake.""
"Where is he?""
Benson refused to answer.
Then a second vehicle appeared at the end of the driveway.
A black sedan.
Richard Voss stepped out.
He looked at the scene and stopped.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Richard began laughing.
"Well, this is quite a family reunion.""
Samuel moved toward him.
"You should have stayed away.""
Richard looked at his brother.
"You've always been dramatic.""
Elizabeth stepped forward.
"Where is my mother?""
Richard's expression changed.
He looked at her.
"Your mother is dead.""
"You're lying.""
"I told you what happened.""
"You told me she abandoned me.""
Richard sighed.
"She made her choices.""
Margaret stepped forward.
"Catherine didn't abandon her daughter. You took her.""
Richard turned toward her.
"You're still alive?""
"Disappointed?""
He looked toward Benson.
"Do something.""
Benson remained pinned against the cruiser.
Daniel tightened his grip.
"He's not going anywhere.""
Richard reached into his jacket.
Marcus saw the movement.
"Richard, don't.""
But the older man pulled out a folded document.
He held it up.
"You all think you've won because you've found some old papers. But the farm is already transferred.""
Helen stepped forward.
"To whom?""
Richard smiled.
"To me.""
He unfolded the document.
It was a deed transferring ownership of the Brooks property to a company called Voss Holdings.
Ethan examined the page.
Then he looked at Helen.
"Mrs. Brooks, do you recognize this signature?""
Helen stared.
It was her name.
Again.
But this time, the document carried a different date.
Richard smiled.
"She signed it willingly.""
Helen shook her head.
"I never saw that paper.""
"Perhaps you forgot.""
Ethan took the document.
"Where was this notarized?""
Richard pointed toward the bottom.
"Gregory Vale.""
Ethan examined the stamp.
Then he smiled.
"Thank you.""
Richard frowned.
"What?""
Ethan held the paper up.
"Gregory Vale's notary commission was revoked six months ago. Every document bearing his stamp after that date is subject to challenge.""
Richard's smile disappeared.
Ethan continued.
"And this deed contains another problem.""
He pointed to the legal description.
"The property number is wrong. This isn't even the Brooks farm.""
Richard snatched the document back.
For the first time, he looked genuinely frightened.
Marcus stepped forward.
"You've been forging everything.""
Richard glared at him.
"Be careful what you accuse me of.""
Margaret raised her phone.
"I have the recording.""
"And I have a lawyer," Richard snapped.
Samuel laughed.
"Not for long.""
He reached into his jacket and produced a second envelope.
Inside was a signed affidavit.
Robert Brooks's signature appeared at the bottom.
It described the original partnership, the fraudulent sales, and the threats Richard had made against the family.
Richard stared at it.
"Where did you get that?""
"Robert gave it to me.""
"You're lying.""
Samuel shook his head.
"No. You're finally out of places to hide.""
Benson suddenly pulled away from Daniel.
He ran toward the cruiser.
But before he could open the door, two more vehicles entered the driveway.
A sheriff's supervisor stepped out with three officers.
"Deputy Benson! Step away from the vehicle!""
Benson froze.
The supervisor looked toward Marcus.
"Mr. Reed?""
Marcus nodded.
"We've been expecting you.""
The supervisor glanced at the recording device in Margaret's hand.
"Then I suggest nobody touches anything.""
Richard tried to walk toward his sedan.
One of the officers blocked him.
"Mr. Voss, you're going to stay right here.""
Richard looked around.
His confidence was gone.
But before the officers could question him, Elizabeth approached.
She held up the hospital record.
"There's something else.""
Everyone turned.
Elizabeth looked directly at Richard.
"You told me Catherine died in 1996.""
Richard said nothing.
"But I found another record. A medical admission from 2004.""
Richard's face tightened.
Elizabeth took a step closer.
"My mother was alive eight years after you said she died.""
Richard looked at the document.
Then he looked at Margaret.
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"Tell her the truth, Richard.""
He shook his head.
"Don't.""
Elizabeth's voice broke.
"Where is my mother?""
Richard stared at her.
May you like
Then he whispered:
"She's been living under another name.""
