Chapter 15: The Woman Behind the Locked Door

Richard refused to say another word.

The sheriff's supervisor ordered him into the cruiser.

Deputy Benson was taken separately.

Before the vehicles left, Ethan made sure the officers photographed every document, including the forged deed and the recordings Margaret had captured.

Marcus stood beside Elizabeth.

She looked as though she might collapse.

"He's lying," she whispered.

Marcus didn't answer.

"He's lying, isn't he?""

"I don't know.""

She looked at him.

"He's my father. He knows where my mother is.""

Marcus studied her face.

"Then we'll find her.""

Samuel approached.

"There's a place we need to check.""

Margaret turned toward him.

"Samuel, no.""

He looked at her.

"You know what I'm talking about.""

Margaret closed her eyes.

Then she nodded.

Marcus looked between them.

"Where?""

Samuel answered quietly.

"An old nursing home outside Knoxville. Catherine was admitted there under a different name.""

Elizabeth grabbed his sleeve.

"How long have you known?""

Samuel swallowed.

"Since yesterday.""

"Yesterday?""

"I found a record. I wasn't certain it was her.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't want to give you false hope.""

Elizabeth pulled away.

"Everyone in this family seems to think they're protecting me by lying.""

Samuel lowered his head.

"I know.""

Marcus looked toward the farmhouse.

Helen stood on the porch, watching them.

He approached her.

"Mrs. Brooks, we're going to find Catherine.""

Helen nodded.

"Bring her home.""

Marcus hesitated.

"There's something else. Richard may be your son's biological father.""

Helen closed her eyes.

"I've suspected for years.""

Marcus stared at her.

"You knew?""

"Not everything. But I knew Robert was worried about Richard and Catherine. I knew there was a child involved.""

"Why didn't you tell anyone?""

"Because Robert asked me to wait until he could explain.""

Helen looked toward the barn.

"He never got the chance.""

Marcus took her hand.

"We'll make sure the truth comes out.""

Helen squeezed his fingers.

"And Marcus?""

"Yes?""

"Don't let what Richard did change the way you remember James.""

Marcus looked at her.

"I won't.""

She smiled sadly.

"That man loved you. Every single day.""

Marcus nodded.

Then he walked toward the motorcycles.

Within an hour, the group was on the road to Knoxville.

Samuel rode in the lead.

Marcus followed with Daniel.

Ethan and Elizabeth traveled in the truck with Margaret.

The nursing home stood behind a row of pine trees, away from the main highway.

It was a modest facility with white walls, a small garden, and a wooden sign near the entrance.

*CEDAR RIDGE CARE CENTER.*

Inside, a receptionist looked up.

"Can I help you?""

Samuel approached the desk.

"We're looking for a patient.""

"What's her name?""

"Catherine Brooks.""

The receptionist typed into her computer.

Then she shook her head.

"Nobody by that name.""

Elizabeth stepped forward.

"Try Catherine Miller.""

The receptionist typed again.

Her expression changed.

"Are you family?""

Elizabeth nodded.

"I'm her daughter.""

The woman looked toward the hallway.

"Please wait here.""

She disappeared through a door.

Marcus exchanged a glance with Daniel.

"Something's wrong.""

Samuel looked toward the corridor.

"She's here.""

A nurse returned several minutes later.

She carried a clipboard.

"Mrs. Miller has been living here for eleven years. She doesn't receive visitors.""

Elizabeth stepped forward.

"Why not?""

"Those are the instructions on her file.""

"Who gave them?""

The nurse hesitated.

"Her legal guardian.""

Elizabeth's voice became sharp.

"Who?""

The nurse looked down.

"Richard Voss.""

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

"He's not her guardian anymore.""

The nurse frowned.

"Are you certain?""

Ethan approached.

"We have reason to believe the guardianship was obtained through fraudulent documentation. We need to see the records.""

The nurse looked uncomfortable.

"I can't release private medical information.""

Margaret stepped forward.

"Please. I've known Catherine since she was nineteen.""

The nurse studied her face.

Then she looked at Elizabeth.

"She's in room 214.""

Elizabeth started walking.

The nurse called after her.

"Wait. There's something you should know.""

Elizabeth stopped.

"Mrs. Miller has been asking for someone.""

"Who?""

The nurse looked at her.

"Her daughter.""

Elizabeth began to cry.

The hallway seemed impossibly long.

Room 214 was near the end.

The door stood slightly open.

A woman sat beside the window.

Her hair was almost entirely white. Her face was thin, and her hands rested on a blanket.

She looked older than her years.

Elizabeth stopped at the doorway.

"Mom?""

The woman turned.

For several seconds, she didn't react.

Then her eyes widened.

"Elizabeth?""

Elizabeth covered her mouth.

The woman began crying.

"My baby.""

Elizabeth crossed the room.

She fell to her knees beside the bed and wrapped both arms around her mother.

Catherine held her tightly.

"I thought I'd never see you again.""

Elizabeth sobbed.

"Why didn't you come for me?""

Catherine closed her eyes.

"Richard told me you were dead.""

Elizabeth pulled back.

"What?""

"He said there had been an accident. He showed me a photograph of a little girl in a hospital bed.""

Elizabeth shook her head.

"I was alive.""

"I know that now.""

Catherine touched her daughter's cheek.

"Samuel found me years ago. He tried to get me out, but Richard had legal control over everything. He threatened to have me declared incompetent.""

Marcus stood in the doorway.

Catherine looked toward him.

"Who is that?""

Elizabeth wiped her tears.

"His name is Marcus. He's my brother.""

Catherine's expression changed.

"James's boy?""

Marcus nodded.

She reached out.

"Come here.""

He approached slowly.

Catherine took his hand.

"You're so much like him.""

Marcus swallowed.

"James?""

She nodded.

"Your father.""

Marcus sat beside the bed.

"Did you know him?""

Catherine smiled faintly.

"James saved your life before you were born.""

Marcus looked confused.

Catherine continued.

"When Richard discovered I was pregnant, he wanted to control everything. He said he would take the baby and use her to secure his share of the partnership.""

Elizabeth shook her head.

"Why?""

"Because he believed the family trust would eventually pass to the children.""

Catherine looked at Marcus.

"James offered to raise you. Robert helped arrange the papers. Richard thought you were his son, but he never knew which baby had been placed with which family.""

Marcus frowned.

"Wait. Elizabeth was born on the same day?""

Catherine nodded.

"At the same hospital. Your mother was my cousin. We gave birth within hours of each other.""

Ethan stepped forward.

"Then the records were switched deliberately?""

Catherine nodded.

"Yes. It was the only way to keep Richard from claiming both children.""

Elizabeth looked at her mother.

"Then who is my father?""

Catherine closed her eyes.

"Richard.""

Elizabeth began to cry again.

Marcus squeezed her hand.

Catherine looked toward Samuel.

"And you brought them here.""

Samuel nodded.

"I promised Robert I'd protect them.""

Catherine's expression hardened.

"Then you should have come sooner.""

Samuel lowered his head.

"I know.""

A nurse entered.

"Mrs. Miller needs to rest.""

Elizabeth leaned down and kissed her mother's forehead.

"We'll come back tomorrow.""

Catherine grabbed her wrist.

"Wait.""

She looked toward Marcus.

"There's something you need to know about Robert.""

Marcus leaned closer.

"What?""

Catherine's eyes filled with fear.

"Robert didn't die at the bridge.""

Marcus froze.

"What do you mean?""

"After the crash, James took him away. He was alive when they left.""

Samuel stepped forward.

"That's impossible.""

Catherine shook her head.

"I saw him three days later.""

Marcus felt his heartbeat quicken.

"Where?""

Catherine looked directly at him.

"At the old farmhouse near Miller's Creek.""

Daniel frowned.

"But Helen said Robert was buried.""

Catherine nodded.

"Someone was buried in his place.""

Silence filled the room.

Marcus slowly turned toward Samuel.

"Who was in Robert's grave?""

Catherine whispered:

"Richard Voss's brother.""

Then she reached beneath her pillow and removed a small photograph.

It showed Robert standing outside a farmhouse.

Beside him was James.

Both men were older.

Both were smiling.

And beneath the photograph was a handwritten date.

*OCTOBER 31, 2026.*

Today's date.

Marcus stared at it.

"Where did you get this?""

Catherine's fingers tightened around his.

"Robert sent it to me yesterday.""

Marcus felt the room tilt.

"Yesterday?""

She nodded.

May you like

Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

"Your father is alive, Marcus. And he's waiting for you at Miller's Creek.""
