Calm

Chapter 10: The Folder On The Table

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The entire room seemed frozen around one question.

Why was Lily chosen?

I stared at Victor Hale.

The confident smile.

The expensive suit.

The calm expression of a man who believed he controlled the room.

I hated that kind of confidence.

Not because it came from money.

Not because it came from power.

Because it usually meant someone had spent years making sure nobody questioned them.

I looked at the folder sitting on the table.

Then at my daughter.

Lily was holding Mara's hand.

She looked confused.

Not scared.

Not yet.

And I wanted to keep it that way.

I stepped between her and the table.

"Whatever is in that folder, you don't involve my daughter in this.""

Victor tilted his head.

"Mr. Malone, I think you misunderstand.""

"No.""

My voice stayed calm.

"You misunderstand.""

The room became silent.

"This is a room full of children and parents. If you have something to say, say it to the adults.""

Victor smiled slightly.

"Fair enough.""

He opened the folder.

Inside were papers.

Photographs.

Records.

Nothing that looked like a threat.

But the way he held them told me everything.

He had been waiting for this moment.

"I believe everyone deserves to know the truth.""

I almost laughed.

People who say that usually mean they want people to know their version of the truth.

Victor pulled out a document.

"Six months ago, Lily Malone was selected for a special youth development opportunity.""

I frowned.

"What opportunity?""

Nobody answered.

I looked at Mara.

She looked confused too.

"I don't know anything about this.""

Victor smiled.

"Exactly.""

My eyes narrowed.

"What are you talking about?""

He placed the paper down.

"The sponsor program.""

A few parents started whispering.

I looked at him.

"The program that helps talented children?""

"Yes.""

"And?""

"And Lily was identified as a promising student.""

I waited.

"Then why does this sound like a problem?""

Victor leaned back.

"Because certain people believe the selection process was unfair.""

I looked around.

At the parents.

At the children.

Then back at him.

"Who believes that?""

His eyes moved briefly toward Caroline.

And I understood.

She wasn't the beginning of this.

She was a piece.

A piece someone had moved.

I turned toward Caroline.

Her face had gone pale.

"You knew about this?""

She looked ashamed.

"Not everything.""

"Then tell me what you knew.""

She looked at Ava.

Then down.

"Victor offered Ava a place in the program.""

My jaw tightened.

"And Lily?""

Caroline swallowed.

"Lily was chosen too.""

The room went quiet.

"Then why attack her?""

Caroline closed her eyes.

"Because Victor told me there was limited space.""

I looked at Victor.

"And you let her believe my daughter had to lose for hers to win?""

He didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Everyone understood.

I looked at Lily.

She was watching me.

Trying to understand why adults were talking about her like she was part of a competition.

I hated that.

I walked over and picked her up.

She wrapped her arms around my neck.

"Am I in trouble, Daddy?""

Those words broke something inside me.

"No, baby.""

I kissed the top of her head.

"Never.""

Victor watched.

Then he said something that made the room turn cold.

"Actually, Mr. Malone, your daughter may be more involved than you realize.""

I slowly looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

He pulled out another paper.

"This program wasn't just based on talent.""

My eyes narrowed.

"Then what was it based on?""

He smiled.

"Story.""

I didn't like that answer.

"What story?""

He looked at Lily.

"The right story.""

And suddenly I understood.

This was never just about ballet.

It was about image.

Publicity.

A powerful sponsor looking for a perfect picture.

A perfect family.

A perfect child.

A perfect story.

And someone had decided Lily's story wasn't convenient.

"You're saying you wanted my daughter because of me.""

Victor didn't deny it.

"Your background creates interest.""

The room went silent.

"My background?""

"People respond to your image.""

I stared at him.

"The scary biker dad who learns ballet for his daughter.""

There it was.

The truth.

They didn't see Lily.

They saw a headline.

A viral moment.

A story they could sell.

My hands tightened around my daughter.

"She is not your advertisement.""

Victor's expression hardened.

"Careful.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You be careful.""

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

"Because my daughter is not a product.""

The room stayed silent.

Then Lily whispered:

"Daddy?""

I looked down.

"Yeah?""

"Can we go home?""

That was all I needed.

I didn't care about Victor.

I didn't care about the program.

I didn't care about winning.

My daughter wanted safety.

So I carried her out.

But as I reached the door, Victor called after me.

"Mr. Malone.""

I stopped.

"You should ask why Lily was selected before the recital.""

I turned.

"What does that mean?""

He smiled.

"You'll find out.""

And I knew.

May you like

Whatever was coming next...

was bigger than a dance competition.
