Chapter 11: The Truth About Lily

That night, Lily slept with her pink tutu beside her bed.

She had always done that after important moments.

Like the tutu was a friend.

A reminder.

Proof that she had been brave.

But that night, I stood in her doorway and wondered if the world had already started taking that bravery away.

I hated that.

I hated that adults could create problems children never asked for.

I walked into the kitchen.

Mara was sitting at the table.

She had stayed because she knew I needed answers.

"You okay?""

I laughed quietly.

"No.""

She nodded.

"Me neither.""

I poured coffee.

Neither of us drank it.

Finally, I said:

"Tell me everything.""

Mara looked down.

"I wish I could.""

"But you can't.""

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because I didn't know.""

That bothered me.

Not because I blamed her.

Because I realized how many people knew pieces of the truth.

But nobody had the whole picture.

"What did you know?""

Mara took a breath.

"Last year, Victor approached the studio.""

"About the sponsorship?""

"Yes.""

"And?""

"He wanted to create a special program.""

"Why?""

"To help children.""

I waited.

"But also to promote his foundation.""

Of course.

Money always came with conditions.

"What about Lily?""

Mara smiled sadly.

"Lily was different.""

I looked at her.

"Different how?""

"She didn't dance like the other kids.""

I frowned.

"Is that bad?""

"No.""

Mara smiled.

"She danced like she was telling a story.""

I looked toward Lily's room.

"That's what I always say.""

"I know.""

She continued.

"Victor noticed that.""

"And?""

"He wanted her included.""

I shook my head.

"Then why did everything happen?""

Mara hesitated.

"Because Victor wanted control.""

"Control over what?""

"Over the image.""

I leaned back.

"And when Lily didn't fit the image?""

Mara nodded.

"Things changed.""

I was quiet.

Then something clicked.

"The complaint.""

Mara looked at me.

"What?""

"The complaint said I made people uncomfortable.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"But that wasn't really about me.""

"No.""

"It was about removing the thing they couldn't control.""

Mara didn't answer.

Because she knew I was right.

Lily.

My daughter.

A five-year-old girl who danced because she loved it.

Had become a problem because powerful people couldn't decide how to use her.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice.

Quiet.

"Is this Duke Malone?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Rachel.""

"Who is Rachel?""

"I used to work for Victor Hale.""

I stood.

Mara looked at me.

"Why are you calling?""

Silence.

Then:

"Because your daughter isn't the first child he tried to use.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"I left because I didn't agree with what he was doing.""

"Doing what?""

Her voice lowered.

"Creating stories.""

I didn't speak.

"He finds families with emotional stories. He uses them to promote his foundation.""

"What's wrong with that?""

"The families don't always know what they're agreeing to.""

I looked at Lily's room.

"What does this have to do with my daughter?""

Rachel sighed.

"Because Lily was supposed to be the centerpiece.""

"Of what?""

"The biggest campaign Victor has ever created.""

I felt sick.

"What campaign?""

"A documentary.""

I froze.

"About my daughter?""

"Yes.""

I looked at Mara.

She looked shocked.

Rachel continued.

"He wanted the biker father and the little ballerina.""

My jaw tightened.

"The image.""

"Exactly.""

I walked outside.

The night air hit my face.

"And when I didn't cooperate?""

Rachel didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

I knew.

They changed the story.

They made me the problem.

They made Lily the controversy.

"Why are you telling me this?""

"Because I have proof.""

My heart started beating faster.

"What kind of proof?""

"Contracts.""

"Where?""

"Hidden.""

"Where?""

Another pause.

Then she said:

"Inside Victor's office.""

I looked back at my house.

At the window where Lily's night light glowed.

"What do you want from me?""

"I want someone to stop him.""

The line went silent.

Then Rachel added:

"But you need to hurry.""

"Why?""

"Because tomorrow he plans to announce the program publicly.""

I froze.

"With Lily?""

"Yes.""

"And if I say no?""

Her voice became quiet.

"He already has a backup story.""

"What story?""

She answered:

"The angry biker father who ruined everything.""

The call ended.

I stood there.

The same accusation.

The same lie.

But now I knew the truth.

May you like

They weren't afraid of my anger.

They were planning to use it.
