Chapter 6: The Truth Inside The Bag

I didn't want to open Caroline's bag.

I want to make that clear.

I wasn't looking for secrets.

I wasn't trying to destroy someone.

But when Evelyn called her name and she didn't answer...

When we realized she had already left the building...

The situation changed.

The bag sat on the office chair.

Everyone stared at it.

Mara looked uncomfortable.

"We should call her.""

"I agree.""

I reached for my phone.

Then something happened.

The bag fell.

Not hard.

Just enough for the zipper to open.

A folder slid halfway out.

On the front was a name.

Ava Whitmore.

Mara froze.

"That's her daughter's folder.""

I looked at it.

"Why is it here?""

Nobody knew.

I picked it up carefully.

Not opening it.

Just holding it.

Then my phone rang.

It was Caroline.

I answered.

"Your bag is here.""

Her voice came immediately.

"Don't touch anything.""

I paused.

That reaction told me more than anything inside the bag could.

"Why?""

Silence.

Then:

"Just don't.""

I looked at Mara.

She was watching me.

"Caroline.""

My voice was calm.

"What is in this bag?""

Another silence.

Then she whispered:

"You don't understand.""

"Help me understand.""

Her breathing changed.

For the first time, she didn't sound angry.

She sounded scared.

"Bear...""

"Why are you so afraid of me seeing what's inside?""

No answer.

And then the call ended.

I looked at the folder.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Because this wasn't about ballet anymore.

This wasn't about jealousy.

This wasn't even about Lily.

It was about Ava.

The little girl who always held Lily's hand before performances.

The little girl whose mother spent so much energy criticizing another child.

I opened the folder.

And what I saw made my entire body go still.

Inside were documents.

Letters.

Notes.

And one photograph.

A photograph of Ava standing on stage.

But she wasn't smiling.

She was crying.

And written across the back of the photo were four words:

"She knows the truth.""

I stared at those words.

My heart started pounding.

Because suddenly, I understood.

Caroline wasn't just trying to push Lily down.

She was hiding something.

Something involving her own daughter.

And somehow...

Lily had been standing too close to it.

I closed the folder.

Then I looked at Mara.

"How well do you know Caroline?""

Mara shook her head slowly.

"Not as well as I thought.""

I picked up my keys.

"Where are you going?""

I looked toward the door.

"To find Ava.""

"Bear, she's a child.""

"I know.""

I opened the door.

"That's exactly why.""

Because I had learned something years ago.

The strongest people in the world aren't always the loudest.

Sometimes they are the smallest ones.

The ones whose voices adults ignore.

And if someone was trying to silence Ava...

May you like

They were about to find out something.

A father who wears a pink tutu doesn't stop protecting children when the recital ends.
