Chapter 9: The Truth Someone Tried to Bury
For a few seconds after Daniel said the files were gone, I couldn’t speak.
My mind went completely blank.
Not because I didn’t understand.
Because I understood too quickly.
Someone had entered our house.
Someone had searched through the room where Daniel kept his secrets.
Someone had taken the evidence.
And the timing was not a coincidence.
“What do you mean the files are gone?””
My voice sounded distant.
Like I was hearing myself from somewhere else.
Daniel breathed heavily on the phone.
“I came home early. The door was open.””
“Did you call the police?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“Is anything else missing?””
“I don’t know.””
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“Answer me.””
There was a pause.
“No.””
That pause bothered me.
“No what?””
“No. Nothing else seems missing.””
I looked toward the garage.
The room where I had found everything.
The papers.
The documents.
The proof.
Only the things connected to his secrets were gone.
“Someone knew exactly what they were looking for.””
Silence.
Then Daniel said quietly,
“I know.””
I hated that those two words still affected me.
Because this time, they sounded different.
Not defensive.
Not dismissive.
Afraid.
I grabbed my keys.
“I’m coming.””
“Emily, wait.””
“What?””
“Don’t come here.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because I don’t know what’s happening.””
My heart tightened.
“You’re telling me not to come to my own house?””
“No.””
His voice softened.
“I’m telling you because I’m scared.””
That stopped me.
Daniel admitting fear was rare.
Almost impossible.
“What are you afraid of?””
A long pause.
Then:
“That whoever did this isn’t finished.””
I stood there holding the phone.
For the first time, I wasn’t just angry.
I was scared too.
Not for myself.
For Sophie.
That was always where my mind went.
Our daughter.
Her safety.
Her future.
Everything came back to her.
“I’m coming,” I said.
“Emily—”
“I’m not asking.””
Then I hung up.
When I arrived home, a police car was parked outside.
The sight made my stomach turn.
Our neighbors were watching.
Curtains moved.
People noticed.
And suddenly I realized something.
The perfect little life everyone thought we had was cracking in front of everyone.
A police officer spoke with Daniel near the garage.
When he saw me, he immediately walked over.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
I ignored the comment.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“The officer thinks whoever did this knew what they were doing.””
I looked toward the storage room.
The door was open.
The lock was broken.
Everything inside was disturbed.
But the strangest part was exactly what Daniel said.
Nothing else was touched.
The television.
The computers.
The valuables.
Everything remained.
Only the documents were gone.
I stepped closer.
Daniel followed.
“Emily.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“I need to tell you something.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What now?””
He looked hurt.
But I didn’t apologize.
I couldn’t.
Not anymore.
“I didn’t tell the police everything.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
He lowered his voice.
“I didn’t tell them about Victor.””
I looked around.
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
He looked at the broken door.
“Of what they would find.””
My anger rose.
“You still don’t understand.””
“What?””
“You’re still protecting secrets.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“You’re standing in a room where someone broke into our house, and your first instinct is still to hide information.””
He looked away.
“I was ashamed.””
“Shame doesn’t matter anymore.””
That hurt him.
But it was true.
“Someone is involved in something dangerous.””
I pointed around us.
“And you’re still thinking about embarrassment?””
Daniel looked down.
“I know.””
I almost interrupted.
But then he continued.
“I know I should have told you everything.””
That was different.
“I know I made choices that hurt you.””
His voice cracked.
“But I never wanted this.””
I watched him.
And I believed that part.
I believed he didn’t want our family destroyed.
But wanting something and protecting it were different.
“What else don’t I know?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
I stared.
“Really?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I mean… I don’t know what else is happening.””
For the first time in days, I saw something in his face.
Not guilt.
Not defensiveness.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Tell me about Megan.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
He looked away.
“She worked with Victor.””
“And?””
“She was involved in the investment.””
“And?””
He hesitated.
“Emily…”
“Tell me.””
He took a breath.
“Megan created the company structure.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means she handled the paperwork.””
“Why?””
“Because Victor needed someone he trusted.””
“And you trusted her?””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel was silent.
Then he said,
“Because she helped me.””
There it was again.
Everyone had helped him.
Everyone except me.
“How?””
“She helped me move things around.””
My heart sank.
“Move what?””
“Money.””
I felt cold.
“Explain.””
Daniel sat down.
“I was trying to stop everything from collapsing.””
“By moving money?””
“I was trying to buy time.””
“Daniel.””
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like you were hiding financial problems.””
He looked down.
“Because I was.””
I didn’t say anything.
Because finally, he admitted it.
No excuses.
No explanations.
Just the truth.
“Why would Megan risk herself for you?””
His face changed.
“I don’t know.””
But this time, I knew he wasn’t telling the whole truth.
“You do.””
He looked away.
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“She had a reason.””
“What reason?””
He didn’t answer.
“Tell me.””
His voice became quiet.
“She was afraid too.””
“Of what?””
“Of Victor.””
That name again.
The person at the center of everything.
“What does Victor have on her?””
Daniel looked toward the empty storage room.
“I don’t know.””
“But you know something.””
He closed his eyes.
“I know she wasn’t the only one involved.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at me.
“The investment company wasn’t just an investment company.””
I waited.
“It was a way to move money.””
The room felt colder.
“Whose money?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
“Clients.””
I froze.
“Clients?””
“Yes.””
“What clients?””
“People who invested.””
I stared.
“Are you saying this wasn’t just your money?””
“No.””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“It was other people’s money too.””
Everything suddenly made sense.
The fear.
The secrets.
The missing files.
The urgency.
This wasn’t just about a failed investment.
This was bigger.
Much bigger.
“You knew?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I knew something wasn’t right.””
“When?””
“After the first few months.””
I felt sick.
“And you stayed?””
“I thought I could fix it.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because I believed it.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t understand how dangerous that is.””
“I do now.””
“No.””
My voice became firm.
“You understand because you got caught.””
That hurt.
But he didn’t argue.
Because maybe he knew it was true.
That evening, after the police left, Daniel and I sat across from each other in the living room.
For the first time in days, we weren’t fighting.
We were just exhausted.
Two people looking at the ruins of something we once thought was unbreakable.
“I need to tell you something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small flash drive.
My eyes narrowed.
“What is that?””
He placed it on the table.
“I copied some files before everything disappeared.””
I stared at him.
“You had backups?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
I almost smiled.
The same fear that made him hide things had also made him save proof.
Life was complicated like that.
“What’s on it?””
“Everything I had.””
I looked at the flash drive.
Then at him.
“Why are you giving it to me?””
“Because if something happens to me…”
I immediately felt cold.
“Don’t say that.””
“I’m serious.””
“Daniel.””
“Emily, listen.””
His voice was urgent.
“I don’t know who we can trust.””
The words scared me.
Because they echoed what I had been feeling.
“Not even Megan?””
He shook his head.
“Especially not Megan.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because Megan wasn’t just helping me.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What else?””
“She was hiding something from Victor.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at the flash drive.
“Something that could destroy him.””
I stared.
“Then why would she help him?””
“I don’t know.””
The answer bothered me.
Because for once, Daniel truly seemed confused.
That night, after Sophie went to sleep, I sat in the dark living room.
The flash drive was in my hand.
A tiny piece of plastic.
Small enough to lose.
But inside it was the truth.
The truth about my husband.
The truth about my sister.
The truth about the people who had been making decisions behind my back.
I plugged it into my laptop.
There were dozens of folders.
Financial records.
Messages.
Photos.
Emails.
I opened the first one.
Then the second.
Then the third.
And finally, I found a folder named:
*Megan - Do Not Open*
My heart stopped.
Because inside that folder was a video file.
Created two days before Daniel hit me.
I clicked it.
The screen went black.
Then a woman appeared.
Megan.
She looked terrified.
She looked directly into the camera.
And the first words she said were:
“Emily, if you are watching this, Daniel finally told you the truth.””
I froze.
Because Megan wasn’t speaking to Daniel.
She was speaking to me.
May you like
And then she said something that changed everything.
“Your husband is not the person you should be afraid of.””
