Chapter 10: The Enemy Behind the Shadows
I couldn’t move.
Megan’s face remained frozen on the screen.
Her eyes were red.
Her expression was nothing like the confident woman I had imagined.
This wasn’t someone who looked like she was hiding a secret.
This was someone who looked like she had been carrying one for too long.
Then the video continued.
“Emily, if you’re watching this, it means Daniel finally gave you the flash drive.””
I looked at the small device beside my laptop.
My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
“How does she know?””
The question came out quietly.
But there was nobody there to answer.
The room felt colder.
More dangerous.
Megan looked directly into the camera.
“I don’t know how much Daniel told you. I don’t know if he told you everything or if he still tried to protect certain people.””
I almost laughed.
Because that sounded exactly like Daniel.
Even when the truth came out, there were always pieces missing.
“I need you to understand something,” Megan continued.
“Daniel made mistakes. Big ones. But he is not the person who started this.””
My heart started beating faster.
Started this.
Those words mattered.
Because until that moment, I had been trying to understand Daniel’s actions.
His bad choices.
His lies.
His fear.
But what if Daniel wasn’t the beginning of the story?
What if he was just another person caught inside it?
Megan took a deep breath.
“Two years ago, Daniel was approached by Victor Hale.””
The screen flickered slightly.
“Victor convinced him to invest in a project called Westbrook Consulting. He made it sound legitimate. He showed him documents, contracts, projected returns.””
She paused.
“But the documents were fake.””
I stared at the screen.
Fake.
The word felt heavy.
“Daniel didn’t know at first. He believed Victor.””
I whispered,
“Of course he did.””
But I didn’t know if I was angry or sad.
Because I knew Daniel had made mistakes.
But I also knew what it felt like to trust the wrong person.
Megan continued.
“After the first investors started asking questions, Victor didn’t admit the problem. He covered it.””
She looked away.
“And that’s when everything got worse.””
The video paused for a moment.
Then:
“Victor started moving money between accounts.””
My stomach tightened.
“Money from new investors was used to cover losses from older investments.””
I covered my mouth.
A terrible feeling moved through me.
Because I finally understood.
It wasn’t just a bad investment.
It was a chain.
A system built on hiding one problem with another.
Megan looked back at the camera.
“Daniel found out.””
A silence followed.
“When he realized what was happening, he wanted to go to the authorities.””
I frowned.
That didn’t sound like the Daniel I knew.
The Daniel I knew hid things.
The Daniel I knew avoided conflict.
“He didn’t go because Victor threatened him.””
My blood ran cold.
“What kind of threat?””
Megan continued.
“Victor knew about Daniel’s family.””
My eyes widened.
“He knew about you.””
The room suddenly felt too quiet.
“He knew about Sophie.””
I froze.
No.
I hated hearing her name connected to this.
My daughter.
My innocent little girl.
Megan’s voice became softer.
“Victor told Daniel that if he exposed him, he would make sure Daniel lost everything.””
The screen blurred.
Not because of the video.
Because tears had filled my eyes.
For days, I had been angry.
At Daniel.
At Rachel.
At everyone.
But now I was seeing something else.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not the kind people use as an excuse.
The kind that changes the way they behave.
Megan continued.
“Daniel should have told you.””
My eyes moved back to the screen.
“Yes,” she said.
“He should have trusted you.””
That sentence hurt because it was exactly what I had been thinking.
“But he made the wrong choice.””
The video paused.
Then she whispered:
“He thought hiding the truth would protect you.””
I looked away.
Because I knew that feeling.
I knew Daniel believed that.
But belief didn’t make it right.
Megan continued.
“There is something else you need to know.””
My heart tightened.
“Rachel didn’t know everything.””
I sat up.
“What?””
Megan shook her head.
“She knew Daniel was struggling. She knew about some of the money. But she didn’t know the full situation.””
I thought about my sister.
Her tears.
Her regret.
Her fear.
A small part of me felt relief.
But another part wondered.
How many more layers were there?
“Michael knew more than Rachel.””
My expression changed.
Daniel’s brother.
Of course.
Megan looked serious.
“Michael was the person who introduced Daniel to Victor.””
The room went silent.
I stopped breathing for a second.
Michael.
The person Daniel blamed.
The person everyone thought was part of the problem.
Maybe he was.
But maybe he was also something else.
“Michael wasn’t just a victim.””
Megan’s next words made my heart drop.
“He was involved.””
The video paused.
Then continued.
“He knew what Victor was doing.””
I felt sick.
“How?””
I whispered.
How could so many people know?
How could everyone see pieces of the truth except me?
Megan looked into the camera.
“The reason I made this video is because I knew something would happen.””
Her face changed.
Fear.
“I knew Victor would eventually try to destroy the evidence.””
I glanced toward the garage.
The broken lock.
The missing files.
The timing.
Everything connected.
“The files disappearing wasn’t random.””
My body went cold.
“He knew you found them.””
I stared.
“How?””
Megan took a breath.
“Because someone told him.””
My mind immediately went through every name.
Daniel.
Rachel.
Michael.
Claire.
Megan.
Someone had betrayed us.
Someone had told Victor.
The video continued.
“I don’t know who informed him.””
A pause.
“But I know one thing.””
Megan leaned closer.
“Victor doesn’t act alone.””
The screen went black.
For a moment, I thought the video had ended.
Then another file opened automatically.
A recording.
Audio only.
I almost closed it.
Then I heard Daniel’s voice.
My hand froze.
“Please, Victor.””
My stomach tightened.
This was not a conversation I was supposed to hear.
“I need more time.””
A man’s voice answered.
Victor.
“You already had time.””
Daniel sounded desperate.
“I can fix this.””
“No, Daniel. You can’t.””
A pause.
Then Victor said:
“You made the mistake of believing you were important.””
My skin crawled.
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you were never the person in control.””
The recording ended.
I sat there in silence.
Because suddenly, the entire story changed.
Daniel wasn’t the mastermind.
He wasn’t innocent either.
He had lied.
He had hidden things.
He had made choices that hurt me.
But he was also trapped.
And the most frightening part?
I didn’t know who was holding the cage.
The next morning, I barely slept.
Sophie came downstairs wearing her favorite pink sweater.
The same one I had folded the night everything started.
“Mommy?””
I looked up.
“Yeah?””
“Are you and Daddy fighting?””
My heart broke.
Children always know.
Even when adults try to hide things.
“No, sweetheart.””
I forced a smile.
“We’re just having grown-up problems.””
“Can you fix them?””
I looked at her.
The question hurt more than anything.
Because I didn’t know.
“I’m going to try.””
She nodded.
Then she hugged me.
And for a moment, everything else disappeared.
Not the money.
Not the secrets.
Not the danger.
Just my daughter.
The reason I had been fighting from the beginning.
After she went to school, I called Daniel.
He answered immediately.
“Emily?””
“We need to talk.””
His voice changed.
“Did something happen?””
“I watched the video.””
Silence.
A long silence.
Then:
“I’m sorry.””
I closed my eyes.
“Stop apologizing.””
He went quiet.
“Tell me the truth.””
“I will.””
“No more protecting me.””
“I won’t.””
“No more protecting yourself.””
Another pause.
“I understand.””
I almost smiled sadly.
That phrase again.
But this time, I believed he meant it.
“Did Victor threaten you?””
“Yes.””
“Did he threaten Sophie?””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“But you still should have told me.””
“I know.””
I took a breath.
“I need to know everything.””
“I’ll tell you.””
“Even if it hurts?””
“Yes.””
“Even if it destroys us?””
His voice became quiet.
“Yes.””
For the first time in weeks, I heard something different.
Not an excuse.
Not a defense.
A decision.
“Meet me somewhere private.””
“Where?””
“Not the house.””
“Why?””
“Because if Megan was right…”
I looked around.
At the windows.
At the doors.
At the life I thought was safe.
“We don’t know who is watching.””
We met at a small park away from our neighborhood.
Daniel looked exhausted.
Older.
Like the last few weeks had taken years from him.
“I should have told you sooner.””
I didn’t respond.
He continued.
“Victor knew everything about us.””
“How?””
“Because someone close to him gave him information.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know.””
“Do you have a suspicion?””
He hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Someone who had access to our lives.””
My heart tightened.
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“I think it was someone from my family.””
The words hit me.
“Your family?””
“Yes.””
“Michael?””
Daniel looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“But you think it’s possible.””
“Yes.””
I sat there silently.
Because I realized something terrifying.
The person who betrayed us wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone close.
Someone who knew our routines.
Someone who knew where we lived.
Someone who knew Sophie.
Then Daniel reached into his bag.
He placed another envelope on the table.
“What is this?””
“Something I found before the files disappeared.””
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A recent photograph.
My breath caught.
Because it showed Victor Hale.
Standing beside someone.
Someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who is this?””
His face turned pale.
And he whispered:
“That’s the person who has been helping Victor from the beginning.””
I looked back at the photograph.
And my heart sank.
Because the person standing beside Victor wasn’t Michael.
It wasn’t Megan.
It wasn’t Rachel.
It was someone I never thought I would have to fear.
Someone who had been part of my life for years.
Someone who knew exactly how to hurt me.
Someone who knew exactly where I would look for answers.

The person in the picture was:
*Daniel’s mother.*
