Calm

Chapter 13: The Brother Who Sold the Truth

Michael stood in the doorway like he belonged there.

That was the part that terrified me the most.

Not the fact that he had found us.

Not the fact that he knew where we were.

It was the calmness.

The confidence.

The way he looked at us like this was a conversation he had planned long before we ever realized we were part of it.

Daniel moved in front of me.

“Michael.””

His brother’s expression didn’t change.

“Hello, Daniel.””

I looked between them.

The two brothers.

The same family.

The same childhood.

The same blood.

And somehow, one of them had been helping destroy everything we built.

“Why are you here?””

Daniel’s voice was low.

Michael looked around the office.

“The same reason you are.””

My heart tightened.

“What reason is that?””

Michael looked at me.

“Answers.””

I almost laughed.

Because everyone had become an expert at pretending.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

Everyone claimed they were searching for the truth.

But somehow, the truth always seemed to hurt me the most.

“You followed us.””

Michael smiled slightly.

“Followed?””

He stepped inside.

“No.””

He closed the door behind him.

“I knew you would come here.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“How?””

Michael looked at him.

“Because I know you.””

A silence followed.

And I realized something.

Michael wasn’t talking like someone who had discovered a location.

He was talking like someone who understood Daniel’s choices.

His fears.

His habits.

He knew exactly where Daniel would go.

Exactly what Daniel would do.

“You knew about the office.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew about the documents.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about Victor.””

“Yes.””

Each answer hit Daniel harder.

But then Daniel asked the question I had been waiting for.

“Were you working with him?””

Michael looked away.

For the first time, his confidence cracked.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“Yes.””

The word filled the room.

Daniel stared at him.

“No.””

Michael looked at his brother.

“I didn’t want it to happen this way.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

A broken laugh.

“You didn’t want it to happen this way?””

He stepped closer.

“You helped him.””

“I was trying to protect the family.””

The words made me freeze.

Not because they were surprising.

Because they sounded familiar.

Protect.

Everyone used that word.

Everyone used it to explain the things they did behind my back.

“Protect the family?””

Daniel’s voice rose.

“You destroyed it.””

Michael shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Daniel pointed at him.

“I think I finally do.””

Michael’s expression hardened.

“You think Victor is the only problem?””

I watched carefully.

Because that sentence mattered.

“What does that mean?””

Michael looked at Daniel.

“You still don’t know everything.””

My stomach sank.

Not again.

Another hidden truth.

Another missing piece.

I stepped forward.

“No.””

Both men looked at me.

“I’m done with this.””

My voice shook.

“But I’m not backing away.””

Michael studied me.

“You’re more like your father than I expected.””

The mention of my father immediately caught my attention.

“What does that mean?””

He smiled sadly.

“That’s why Victor was afraid of you.””

I felt cold.

“You knew my father?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Daniel looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Michael sighed.

“This is the problem with secrets.””

He looked around the room.

“Everyone knows a piece.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael continued.

“Your father wasn’t just an investor.””

My heart raced.

“He was investigating Victor.””

I swallowed.

“I know.””

Michael looked surprised.

“You know?””

“Margaret told us.””

His face changed.

“Margaret?””

“Yes.””

Michael stepped back slightly.

“That changes things.””

“What?””

He looked worried now.

“She wasn’t supposed to tell you.””

I felt my anger rise.

“Why?””

“Because she knows what happens when people get too close.””

I stared at him.

“You mean like what happened to my father?””

Silence.

That was the answer.

My knees felt weak.

“Tell me.””

Michael looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“I didn’t start this.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Of course not.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then explain.””

Michael ran his hand through his hair.

“Victor found out your father was collecting evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“Proof that Westbrook wasn’t just a business scam.””

I waited.

“Proof that Victor had been using investors’ money for years.””

My stomach tightened.

“And my father?””

Michael looked down.

“He tried to expose him.””

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Then Michael said:

“Victor made sure he couldn’t.””

The room became silent.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

My father’s death.

Something I had spent years accepting.

Something I thought was simply tragedy.

Now it was connected to this.

To them.

To Victor.

To everything.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because you were safer not knowing.””

I stared at him.

“Stop.””

He frowned.

“What?””

“Stop saying that.””

My voice became louder.

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

I pointed around the room.

“My husband hid things to protect me.””

“My sister hid things to protect me.””

“Your mother hid things to protect me.””

“And now you’re doing the same thing.””

I stepped closer.

“Do you understand what all of you did?””

Nobody spoke.

“You didn’t protect me.””

My voice broke.

“You took away my choices.””

That silence hurt more than any argument.

Because they knew I was right.

Michael looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to apologize yet.””

He looked back.

“Then what do you want?””

“The truth.””

He nodded.

Finally.

“The truth is that Victor never cared about the money.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He cared about control.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Michael looked at his brother.

“Victor didn’t choose you because you were successful.””

A pause.

“He chose you because you were easy to manipulate.””

Daniel went still.

The words hurt.

But they were true.

Michael continued.

“He knew your weakness.””

“What weakness?””

Michael looked at him.

“You wanted to prove yourself.””

Daniel said nothing.

“You spent your entire life trying to be different from Dad.””

The words hit Daniel.

Because I knew exactly what he meant.

Daniel had always talked about becoming successful.

About building something.

About never failing.

Michael continued.

“Victor knew that.””

“So he used it.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked down.

“And you?””

Michael’s face changed.

“I was already involved.””

“How?””

“I introduced you.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at him.

“You introduced me to Victor.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Michael looked ashamed.

“Because I owed him.””

My heart sank.

“Owed him what?””

“Money.””

Of course.

Another debt.

Another secret.

Another person trapped.

Michael continued.

“I thought if I brought him new investors, I could get out.””

Daniel looked disgusted.

“So you sacrificed me?””

“No.””

“You brought him my name.””

“I didn’t know what he would become.””

“But you knew enough.””

Michael had no answer.

Because he did.

He knew enough.

That was the problem.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Michael looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

Daniel noticed.

“Who is it?””

Michael ignored him.

He answered.

“Hello?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael’s expression became terrified.

“Wait.””

A pause.

“No.””

Another pause.

Then:

“You said you wouldn’t involve them.””

My blood ran cold.

Who was he talking to?

Michael looked at us.

The fear on his face was real.

He hung up.

“What happened?””

He didn’t answer.

“Michael.””

He looked at me.

“Victor knows you found the file.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“How?””

Michael looked down.

“Because someone told him.””

My heart tightened.

“Who?””

Michael didn’t answer.

“Who?””

Finally, he whispered:

“Someone who was with you tonight.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked at Michael.

Nobody moved.

“What are you saying?””

Michael’s voice dropped.

“I’m saying Victor has someone close to you.””

A horrible thought entered my mind.

“No.””

Michael looked at me.

“You need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Victor didn’t need to break into your house.””

My stomach turned.

“Why?””

“Because he already had someone inside.””

I felt dizzy.

Someone inside.

Someone close.

Someone who knew everything.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I looked down.

One sentence.

*Stop looking for answers, Emily. You’re closer than you realize.*

My blood ran cold.

Daniel saw my face.

“What is it?””

I handed him the phone.

He read the message.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“Daniel?””

He looked terrified.

Because he recognized the number.

“Whose number is it?””

He slowly raised his eyes.

And whispered:

“It’s my mother’s.””

The room went completely silent.

Because Margaret had warned us.

She had claimed she was helping us.

She had said Victor was coming for me.

But now her phone was sending threats.

May you like

And suddenly, I didn’t know who was protecting me.

Or who was leading me exactly where they wanted me to go.
