Chapter 9: Beneath the Black Water
The boathouse door opened another inch.
Then another.
A strip of darkness appeared between the frame and the door, followed by the outline of a man.
“Marcus.””
I didn't know his voice.
That was almost a relief.
At least it wasn't my mother.
I grabbed Lily's hand.
“Nora, back up.””
Nora was already moving.
Tara stood frozen near the wall.
Daniel raised the flashlight toward the doorway.
“Get out of the light.””
The man stepped inside.
Behind him came two more figures.
They weren't rushing.
They didn't need to.
They knew exactly where we were.
The first man looked at me.
“Mr. Carter.””
I didn't answer.
His gaze shifted to Lily and Nora.
“Two for the price of one.””
Nora moved in front of Lily.
“No.””
The man smiled.
“That's unfortunate.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You don't know what you're dealing with.””
“I know exactly what I'm dealing with.””
He raised a gun.
Everything stopped.
“Back away from the water.””
I looked at the lake.
Black.
Still.
Only moonlight rippling across the surface.
Lily whispered, “Dad.””
“Don't move.””
The man pointed the gun toward the dock.
“Both girls. Now.””
Tara stepped forward.
“No.””
He turned the gun toward her.
“You've already made enough mistakes tonight.””
She froze.
I moved slightly in front of her.
“You want the girls?””
“Yes.””
“Then leave her out of it.””
“You don't get to negotiate.””
“What do you want from Lily?””
He smiled.
“She knows where it is.””
“I don't.””
“I wasn't talking to you.””
He looked at Lily.
“You remember.””
Lily's face was pale.
“I remember enough.””
“Then you know where to go.””
“I don't.””
The man nodded.
“That's fine.””
He motioned toward the water.
“We have other ways of helping memory.””
Tara stepped forward.
“Don't touch her.””
The man's expression hardened.
“You've already failed once.””
Tara's face went white.
He nodded toward Nora.
“And twice.””
Nora stared at him.
“You're the man from the truck.””
“Yes.””
“I remember you.””
“Good.””
“Did you take me?””
“No.””
He smiled.
“I made sure nobody could find you.””
Nora's fists clenched.
“You erased me.””
“I protected an asset.””
“You destroyed my life.””
“Your life was already over.””
Lily grabbed Nora's hand.
“She isn't an asset.””
The man looked at Lily.
“No.””
His smile disappeared.
“She is evidence.””
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at me.
“Your mother stole something that belongs to people much more powerful than you.””
“The archive.””
“Yes.””
“And you think Lily knows where it is.””
“She doesn't merely know.””
He raised the gun slightly.
“She is the key.””
Nora shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She looked at Lily.
“Mom divided the memory.””
Lily's eyes widened.
“What?””
“She didn't put everything in one place.””
Nora looked at me.
“She knew they would come for one of us.””
“So she split it between us.””
“Exactly.””
I looked at Lily.
“What do you remember?””
She stared at the water.
“Not the archive.””
“Then what?””
“A door.””
“What door?””
“A metal door under the dock.””
The man's expression changed.
There.
That was the first real reaction I'd seen from him.
“You remember.””
Lily nodded.
“I remember Mom taking me there.””
“When?””
“The night of the lake.””
The man took a step forward.
“Then show me.””
“No.””
His eyes hardened.
“Lily.””
She shook her head.
“I won't.””
He raised the gun.
I moved instantly.
“Don't.””
He kept his eyes on Lily.
“Five minutes ago, you thought I was your enemy.””
“Now I know.””
“You know nothing.””
“I know you hurt Nora.””
“I saved her.””
“You erased her.””
“I kept her alive.””
“You did the same thing to her that everyone did to me.””
The man's expression changed.
“What did they do to you?””
Lily's voice broke.
“They made me feel like I didn't belong anywhere.””
He stared at her.
For a brief moment, something almost human passed across his face.
Then it vanished.
“Your mother made choices.””
“So did you.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
He looked at the lake.
“Come.””
Lily didn't move.
The man pointed toward Tara.
“Then she comes with me.””
“No,” Lily said.
“Decide.””
Tara stepped forward.
“Lily.””
“No.””
“Listen to me.””
Tara looked at her.
“You don't owe me anything.””
Lily's eyes filled.
“You're my daughter.””
The words stunned everyone.
Tara took a breath.
“You always have been.””
Lily stared at her.
“Then why did you make me feel like I wasn't?””
Tara's tears fell.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of me?””
“Of losing you.””
“You already lost me.””
The words broke something in Tara.
She nodded.
“I know.””
Then Daniel moved.
It happened too fast.
He knocked the gun sideways.
A shot exploded into the ceiling.
Everyone screamed.
The second man rushed forward.
I shoved Lily behind me.
Nora grabbed Tara.
The boathouse erupted into chaos.
Daniel wrestled with the gunman.
The second man swung toward us.
I grabbed an oar and struck his arm.
He cursed.
Tara pulled open the hatch.
“Down!””
I didn't question her.
“Lily!””
We dropped through the opening.
The ladder led beneath the boathouse.
Water dripped from the beams overhead.
Nora came next.
Then Tara.
Daniel backed toward us.
“Go!””
The gunman fired again.
The bullet tore through the wooden floor.
Daniel jumped through the hatch and pulled it shut.
We plunged into darkness.
“Where does this go?”” I whispered.
Tara pointed.
“Under the dock.””
A narrow tunnel stretched beneath the structure.
The water reached our ankles.
Then our calves.
Lily froze.
“I remember this.””
Nora took her hand.
“Stay with me.””
We moved forward.
Behind us came pounding on the hatch.
“They're coming,” Daniel said.
“How far?””
“Not far enough.””
The tunnel curved.
At the end was a metal door.
Lily stopped.
“That.””
I looked at her.
“This is the door?””
She nodded.
“But there's no handle.””
Nora ran her fingers along the frame.
“Mom used something.””
“The silver key.””
I pulled it from my pocket.
It didn't fit.
Lily shook her head.
“Not that one.””
She reached into her sweatshirt.
Then pulled out the red ribbon.
The tiny brass key was still attached.
She inserted it into a nearly invisible slot.
Click.
The door opened.
A wave of freezing water rushed over my shoes.
Behind the door was a small chamber.
And inside stood a metal cabinet.
Sealed.
Dry.
Untouched.
Tara whispered:
“The archive.””
I looked at Daniel.
He stared at the cabinet like he had spent half his life dreaming about it.
“How do we open it?””
Nora pointed.
“Two locks.””
There were indeed two keyholes.
One on each side.
I looked at Lily.
She looked at Nora.
Two sisters.
Two keys.
I understood.
“Together.””
Lily inserted her silver key.
Nora took another from her pocket.
I stared at her.
“When did you get that?””
“Six years ago.””
“You've had it this whole time?””
“Yes.””
Tara covered her mouth.
“You told me you lost it.””
“I lied.””
Nora inserted her key.
They turned them simultaneously.
The cabinet opened.
Inside were dozens of files.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Passports.
Birth certificates.
Medical records.
And one thick black ledger.
I picked it up.
The first pages were names.
Hundreds.
Some crossed out.
Some highlighted.
Some marked with dates.
I turned another page.
My mother's name.
Then Tara's.
Then mine.
Then Lily's.
Then Nora's.
I stared at the markings beside our names.
Lily's file had one word beside it.
*ACTIVE.*
Nora's said:
*RECOVERED.*
Tara's:
*COMPROMISED.*
Mine:
*UNINFORMED.*
I stared at that word.
My entire body went cold.
“Uninformed.””
Daniel looked over my shoulder.
“They classified you.””
“As what?””
“A controlled party.””
I laughed bitterly.
“My whole life was a project?””
“No.””
He pointed to another page.
“Your mother designed the safeguards.””
“What safeguards?””
“She made sure you wouldn't know.””
I looked at him.
“That doesn't sound like protection.””
“It was.””
“How?””
“If you knew, they could interrogate you.””
I stared at the files.
“Who was responsible?””
Daniel looked away.
“Your mother.””
I felt something inside me crack.
“My mother built this.””
“Yes.””
“Then she wasn't just protecting Lily.””
“No.””
“She was protecting me.””
“Yes.””
“From what?””
Daniel looked at the girls.
“From yourself.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, footsteps echoed through the tunnel.
The door behind us shook.
“They're here,” Tara whispered.
I looked through the archive.
There was one file with no name.
Only a number.
*000*
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Me.
At twelve.
Standing beside my mother.
And behind us…
Evan.
Alive.
My hands started shaking.
On the back of the photograph was a note.
*Marcus knows more than he remembers.*
I stared at Tara.
“What does this mean?””
She didn't answer.
“Tell me.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because you don't remember.””
“Remember what?””
Her eyes filled.
“You were there.””
“Where?””
She whispered:
“At the lake.””
“I was twelve.””
“Yes.””
“I wasn't with Lily.””
“You were.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
“You were.””
“That's impossible.””
“You saw Evan.””
My heart pounded.
“I don't remember.””
“Your mother made sure you didn't.””
The tunnel door shook again.
Daniel grabbed the ledger.
“We need to go.””
I grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
I opened another file.
Inside was a statement written by my mother.
*Marcus saw his father that night.*
I read the next line.
*Evan gave him the archive key.*
Then another.
*Marcus does not remember because I had no choice.*
I stopped breathing.
“Lily.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“Your mother didn't give you the key.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“She gave it to me.””
Lily's expression changed.
“What?””
I looked at the file.
“You gave it to her.””
Nora stared at me.
“That's why the memories are split.””
“What memories?””
“Yours.””
I turned toward Lily.
“You don't remember where the archive is.””
She nodded.
“Because you weren't supposed to.””
I looked at Nora.
“You were.””
Nora looked confused.
“Then why can't I remember?””
“Because your mother took those memories too.””
Tara whispered:
“She split the memory between the sisters.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Three people.””
I felt the world go silent.
“Who?””
She looked directly at me.
“You.””
The tunnel door suddenly burst inward.
The armed men stormed through.
Daniel shouted:
“Run!””
I grabbed the ledger.
Lily grabbed my hand.
Nora grabbed hers.
We sprinted toward the rear passage.
Gunshots echoed behind us.
Wood splintered.
Tara stumbled.
I caught her.
“Keep moving!””
We reached the end of the tunnel.
A metal ladder led toward the dock.
We climbed.
Cold rain had started falling.
The lake was dark and violent now.
Lightning flashed across the sky.
We ran toward the trees.
Then a voice came from behind us.
“Marcus!””
I turned.
The gray-haired man stood on the dock with the gun raised.
But he wasn't looking at me.
He was looking at Lily.
“You're remembering wrong!””
Lily stopped.
He shouted:
“Your mother didn't hide the archive from them!””
She looked at him.
“She hid it from you.””
I stared.
“What?””
The man smiled.
“She knew what you would become.””
I felt a chill.
“Marcus,” Tara whispered.
“What?””
“She wasn't talking about Lily.””
I looked at the man.
He lowered the gun.
“You finally found the truth.””
“What truth?””
He pointed at me.
“Your father didn't disappear because they killed him.””
I waited.
“He disappeared because your mother asked him to.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew what you had done.””
My stomach dropped.
“What I had done?””
The man nodded.
“When you were twelve.””
I looked at Lily.
Then Nora.
Then Tara.
And suddenly fragments came crashing into my mind.
The lake.
A wooden box.
Evan kneeling beside me.
My mother's voice.
Lily crying.
Nora screaming.
And my own hands…
Holding the key.
I stumbled backward.
“No.””
Tara grabbed me.
“Marcus.””
I shook my head.
“I remember.””
Lily stared.
“What?””
“I remember the night.””
“What happened?””
I looked at Tara.
And she knew.
She had known for two years.
Maybe for six.
Maybe forever.
I whispered:
“I opened the archive.””
The gray-haired man smiled.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“And you weren't twelve when you did it.””
I stared at him.
“You were thirty-two.””
My blood ran cold.
“That’s impossible.””
He shook his head.
“No, Marcus.””
He looked at Lily.
“What's impossible is that you still believe you're the man who raised her.””
The rain came down harder.
And behind the stranger, another figure stepped onto the dock.
A woman.
Gray hair.
Older.
Alive.
My mother's face.
She looked at me.
Then at Lily.
And whispered:
“I'm sorry, son.””
I couldn't breathe.
May you like
Because she wasn't looking at me like a stranger.
She was looking at me like she had expected me to remember all along.
