Chapter 8: The Sister in the Doorway

Lily stared at the girl in the doorway as if she were looking into a mirror that had somehow grown older.

Neither of them moved.

The girl was thin, pale, and exhausted. Her dark hair hung loosely around her shoulders, and there was a tiny scar just beneath her left eyebrow.

Lily had one too.

I had seen it hundreds of times.

I'd always assumed Lily had gotten it when she was little.

Now I wondered if that was another lie.

“Lily,” the girl said again.

Lily's lips parted.

“Who are you?””

The girl swallowed.

“You know.””

“I don't.””

“Yes, you do.””

She took one step into the room.

Lily stepped backward.

I moved beside her.

“Stay there.””

The girl's eyes shifted toward me.

“You're Marcus.””

I felt a chill.

“How do you know me?””

She gave a sad smile.

“Because my mother talked about you.””

“My mother?””

“No.””

She looked at Lily.

“Our mother.””

The room went silent.

Lily whispered, “You're my sister.””

The girl nodded.

“My name is Nora.””

Tara made a strange sound behind us.

Nora looked at her.

“You.””

Tara's face went white.

“You remember me?””

“I remember enough.””

Tara took a step forward.

Nora immediately stepped back.

“Don't.””

“I didn't mean to hurt you.””

“You already did.””

Her voice wasn't angry.

That somehow made it worse.

She looked at Lily.

“I've been waiting for you to remember.””

“How long?””

“Almost six years.””

Lily's eyes widened.

“You knew where I was?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you find me?””

“Because they were watching.””

“Who?””

Nora looked toward the hallway.

“The same people who are looking for you now.””

I closed the bedroom door.

“Start talking.””

Nora looked at me.

“You sound like her.””

“Who?””

“Our mother.””

Lily glanced at me.

“Do you know what happened to her?””

Nora lowered her eyes.

“I know what they told me.””

“What did they tell you?””

“That she was dead.””

Tara closed her eyes.

“Was she?””

Nora shook her head.

“I don't think so.””

“Why?””

“Because she called me.””

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

My heart jumped.

“From where?””

“I don't know.””

“What did she say?””

“She said Lily was safe.””

Lily's eyes filled.

“She knew me?””

“Yes.””

“Did she say where she was?””

“No.””

“Did she say anything else?””

Nora hesitated.

“She said Marcus wasn't what he thought he was.””

I stared at her.

“Everyone seems to know things about me except me.””

Nora looked at me sympathetically.

“That's what they wanted.””

“Who?””

“The people who created the archive.””

Daniel appeared in the doorway behind us.

“The program.””

Nora nodded.

“Project 341.””

Lily turned toward him.

“What is it?””

Nora looked at Lily.

“A system.””

“For what?””

“For making people disappear without killing them.””

I felt the hairs rise on my arms.

“Explain.””

Nora walked to the desk.

She sat down.

“They didn't need to murder people. They just changed records. Birth certificates. School records.

Medical histories. Bank accounts. Addresses.””

“So people became someone else.””

“Exactly.””

“Why?””

“To protect them.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Nora looked at him.

“To control them.””

That silenced him.

I looked at Lily.

“And the children?””

Nora nodded.

“Some children were used because children were easier to move.””

“Move where?””

“Different states. Different families. Different identities.””

Lily's face went pale.

“Like me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Nora stared at the floor.

“Because our father was trying to expose them.””

“Evan.””

She nodded.

“He found the archive.””

“Then why didn't he release it?””

“Because he didn't have everything.””

“What was missing?””

“The proof.””

“The archive wasn't enough?””

“It showed transactions. Names. Accounts. Movements.””

She looked at me.

“But it didn't show what the transactions were for.””

I understood.

“The children.””

“Yes.””

Nora's voice dropped.

“They needed proof that the children were being used deliberately.””

“What did they use them for?””

She didn't answer.

“Nora.””

“They created identities for people who needed to disappear.””

“Witnesses?””

“Sometimes.””

“Criminals?””

“Sometimes.””

“People with money?””

“Mostly.””

I stared at her.

“And the children?””

“They were decoys.””

“Decoys for what?””

“Identity transfers.””

I frowned.

“I don't understand.””

Nora leaned forward.

“Imagine someone needs to disappear.””

She pointed at Lily.

“They find a child whose identity is clean.””

“Then what?””

“They slowly build another identity around that child.””

“For whom?””

“For an adult.””

I felt sick.

“So someone could steal a child's identity.””

“Yes.””

“And become that person?””

“Not exactly. They created records that made two lives overlap.””

Tara whispered, “Oh God.””

Nora looked at her.

“You knew.””

“I suspected.””

“You knew enough.””

Tara started crying.

“I was trying to get her away.””

“You got one of us away.””

Nora stood.

“What happened to me?””

Tara couldn't answer.

“I was eight.””

Silence.

“They told me you were dead.””

Nora pointed at Tara.

“You told them that.””

Tara shook her head.

“I didn't.””

“You did.””

“I didn't know where you were.””

“You knew.””

“I lost you.””

“You left me.””

Tara broke down.

“I had Lily.””

“You had both of us.””

“But they were coming.””

“So you chose her.””

Nora's words hit the room like a slap.

Lily looked between them.

“You chose me?””

Tara wiped her tears.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you were younger.””

Nora laughed bitterly.

“That's what she said.””

I stared at Tara.

“You left Nora?””

“I thought I could come back.””

“Did you?””

Tara shook her head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because by the time I returned, the house was empty.””

Nora crossed her arms.

“Because they took me.””

Lily stepped toward her.

“Who?””

Nora looked at her.

“The same man from the truck.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“He was there?””

“Yes.””

“And he took you?””

“He didn't take me.””

Nora stared at Daniel.

“He took my identity.””

I didn't understand.

Then she explained.

“They told everyone I was someone else.””

“What happened to the real you?””

“On paper, I stopped existing.””

Lily whispered, “That's horrible.””

“It gets worse.””

Nora walked to the filing cabinet.

She opened a drawer.

Pulled out a folder.

Inside was a photograph of Nora as a child.

Underneath it was a different name.

*Elise Morgan.*

“That's what they called me.””

I stared at the document.

“What did they do with that identity?””

“They gave it to someone else.””

“To whom?””

Nora shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“And you became Elise?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I was moved to another family.””

Lily looked horrified.

“Did they know?””

“No.””

“Your family?””

“They thought I was Elise.””

“For how long?””

“Four years.””

“What happened?””

“I started remembering.””

“Remembering what?””

“You.””

Lily's eyes filled.

“Me?””

“We were together before.””

“I don't remember.””

“You were little.””

“Where?””

“In the lake house.””

I stared at Nora.

“You lived there?””

“For a while.””

“With Lily?””

“Yes.””

“Tara?””

“For a few months.””

Tara whispered, “I didn't know.””

Nora turned to her.

“You knew enough.””

“Why didn't Lily remember you?””

“Because they separated us.””

“Who?””

“Our mother.””

Lily shook her head.

“Why would she separate us?””

“Because she knew one of us would be followed.””

“Which one?””

“Me.””

Nora pulled another photograph from the file.

It showed two little girls sitting on the porch of the lake house.

One was clearly Lily.

The other was Nora.

Between them sat a wooden box.

On the box was written:

*341*

Lily stared at it.

“I remember that.””

Nora smiled faintly.

“You used to hide it.””

“What's inside?””

“We never opened it.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Why not?””

“Because Mom told us not to.””

Tara looked at Nora.

“Your mother knew.””

“Yes.””

“She knew about the program?””

“She helped build the archive.””

I looked at her.

“Your mother?””

Nora nodded.

“She worked there.””

My heart sank.

“She helped them?””

“She worked for them before she understood what they were doing.””

“And then?””

“She stole the records.””

“The archive.””

“Yes.””

“Evan helped her?””

“Yes.””

“So they were both involved.””

“At first.””

“What changed?””

“They found out.””

Nora looked toward the window.

“They started taking people.””

“People who knew.””

“Yes.””

“Claire?””

“She escaped.””

I stopped.

“Claire is alive?””

“I think so.””

“How?””

“She contacted me.””

“When?””

“Last year.””

“Why didn't you tell anyone?””

“Because I didn't know who to trust.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What about you?””

Nora shook her head.

“Daniel tried to help.””

“Did he?””

“Yes.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“But he couldn't get us all out.””

Nora looked at him.

“You had one choice.””

Daniel nodded.

“I did.””

“You chose Lily.””

He looked at her.

“You were already gone.””

Nora's expression hardened.

“That doesn't make it better.””

“No.””

I stepped between them.

“What happened to Evan?””

Nora's eyes dropped.

“He disappeared.””

“Dead?””

“I don't know.””

“Last sighting?””

“Six months after Lily came to Tara.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew about our family.””

“Yes.””

“Did Evan ever see me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because he was afraid you'd recognize him.””

“Recognize him?””

“He looked like you.””

I gave a bitter laugh.

“That much I've figured out.””

Nora looked at Lily.

“But he told me something.””

“What?””

“That if he couldn't come back…”

She paused.

“Marcus would raise his daughters.””

I stared at her.

“His daughters?””

“Both.””

My voice went quiet.

“He wanted me to raise both of you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't he tell me?””

“Because he thought telling you would get you killed.””

I looked at Lily.

Then Nora.

Then Tara.

All the years.

All the secrets.

All the missing pieces.

And somehow the most painful part was realizing that my life had been built around a promise I didn't even know I'd made.

I turned toward Tara.

“Why didn't you tell me about Nora?””

She cried openly now.

“Because I thought she was dead.””

“You never confirmed it.””

“No.””

“You just assumed.””

“I had no choice.””

“You always had choices.””

She looked at Lily.

“I chose the child I thought I could save.””

Nora's eyes narrowed.

“And forgot the one you couldn't.””

Tara lowered her head.

I didn't know what to say.

Then Lily did something none of us expected.

She walked over to Nora.

Nora looked startled.

Lily stopped right in front of her.

“You're my sister.””

Nora nodded.

“Yes.””

Lily stared at her for a long time.

Then she reached out.

Nora hesitated before taking her hand.

They stood like that.

Two girls who had spent most of their lives believing the other was gone.

Then Lily whispered:

“I think I remember you.””

Nora's eyes filled.

“What?””

“A song.””

Nora smiled through tears.

“The lake song?””

Lily nodded.

“You used to sing it.””

“And you hated it.””

“I did.””

They both laughed.

A small sound.

Fragile.

But real.

I watched them and felt something break inside me.

Not grief.

Something closer to relief.

For the first time that night, Lily wasn't standing alone.

She had someone who understood her memories because she shared them.

Then Daniel suddenly moved toward the window.

“Lights.””

Everyone turned.

Far down the gravel road, headlights appeared.

One vehicle.

Then another.

Nora released Lily's hand.

“They found us.””

“How?”” I asked.

She looked at Tara.

“Because someone told them.””

Tara shook her head.

“No.””

Nora's expression changed.

She reached into her jacket and pulled out a phone.

The screen showed one new message.

She read it.

Then her face went completely white.

“What?””

She turned the phone toward me.

The message was from an unknown number.

*You were never supposed to find your sister.*

Below it was a photograph.

It showed Nora and Lily standing together in the bedroom.

Taken less than a minute earlier.

From outside the house.

My stomach dropped.

“How?””

Daniel looked through the window.

“The camera.””

“What camera?””

“Across the road.””

I followed his gaze.

A small red light blinked from a tree.

Someone had installed a camera facing the house.

Tara looked terrified.

Then another message appeared on Nora's phone.

*Bring both girls to the dock.*

A second message followed.

*Marcus comes alone.*

I stared at the screen.

Lily took my hand.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Dad, don't.””

“They're not getting you.””

Nora stepped forward.

“They know about the dock.””

“Why?””

“Because that's where the archive is.””

I looked at the lake.

“The archive is at the dock?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Under it.””

Tara whispered, “The boathouse.””

Nora nodded.

“That’s where Mom hid it.””

Another sound came from outside.

Doors opening.

Footsteps on gravel.

Several of them.

Daniel picked up the metal box from the floor.

“We can't stay.””

“Where do we go?””

Nora looked at the girls.

“Down.””

“Down where?””

“To the boathouse.””

“There's no time.””

“There is one way.””

She walked toward the hallway.

I followed.

At the end of the stairs, she stopped beside an old wooden cabinet.

She pulled it away from the wall.

Behind it was another narrow passage.

Of course.

I almost laughed.

“How many hidden rooms did this house have?””

Nora glanced back.

“Enough to hide two sisters.””

She looked at Lily.

“Come on.””

We moved downstairs.

Behind us, the front door splintered.

Someone had broken into the house.

Tara grabbed my arm.

“Marcus.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“There is something I never told you.””

“What now?””

“The night Lily disappeared at the lake…”

She swallowed.

“Nora didn't disappear.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“She came back.””

Nora turned.

“What?””

Tara's voice shook.

“I saw her.””

“When?””

“After I found Lily.””

Nora stared at her.

“You saw me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you take me?””

Tara's face crumpled.

“Because there were two men.””

Nora went silent.

“One of them had a gun.””

Lily looked horrified.

“And?””

“I had to choose.””

Nora whispered:

“You chose Lily.””

“Yes.””

“And left me.””

Tara nodded.

“Yes.””

Nora closed her eyes.

A gunshot exploded from upstairs.

Lily screamed.

I pulled both sisters toward the passage.

“Move!””

We ran.

Behind us came shouting.

Then another gunshot.

The passage opened beneath the boathouse.

We emerged into a dark room above the water.

A wooden platform stretched toward the lake.

At the center stood an old steel hatch.

Nora ran to it.

“This is it.””

I looked at Lily.

She was staring at the water.

“What?””

She whispered:

“I remember.””

“What?””

She pointed beneath the dock.

“That's where Mom hid it.””

“Where?””

“Under the water.””

Nora looked at her.

“No.””

“I remember.””

“There isn't anything there.””

“There is.””

She stepped to the edge.

“Mom made me promise.””

“Promise what?””

Lily looked at Nora.

“To never tell anyone where the archive sleeps.””

Then she looked at me.

“It's not in the boathouse.””

A light swept across the windows behind us.

The people outside were getting closer.

Lily pointed into the black water.

May you like

“It’s beneath the lake.””

And behind us, someone slowly opened the boathouse door.
