Chapter 5: What Was Hidden Behind 341

The man stood at the end of the corridor with one hand resting casually against a metal storage door.

He looked nothing like the monster I had imagined during the drive.

He wasn't breathing heavily.

He wasn't angry.

He wasn't carrying anything that looked like a weapon.

He was simply standing there.

Waiting.

That somehow made him more frightening.

Lily pressed herself against my side.

Tara stepped behind us.

The man's eyes moved from me to Lily.

“You brought the key,” he repeated.

I didn't answer.

He smiled faintly.

“You should open the door.””

“Why?””

“Because you've spent the last two years asking the wrong questions.””

I stared at him.

“You've been watching my family.””

“I've been watching the door.””

“You took a picture of my house.””

“I needed to know whether Tara still had the courage to tell you the truth.””

Tara's voice trembled.

“You should have stayed away.””

He looked at her.

“I did.””

“For six years.””

“I gave you six years.””

“You gave us nothing.””

“I gave Lily a chance.””

Lily stepped forward.

“A chance for what?””

The man's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked directly at her rather than through her.

“To remember.””

She frowned.

“I don't know you.””

“You were never supposed to.””

“Then why do I remember you?””

“Because someone failed.””

Tara suddenly spoke.

“Don't listen to him.””

The man's eyes moved back to her.

“You're still doing that.””

“Doing what?””

“Deciding what she is allowed to know.””

Tara's face hardened.

“You don't get to judge me.””

“No?””

He looked at Lily.

“Your mother did.””

That shut everyone up.

I felt Lily's fingers tighten around mine.

“You knew my mother?””

“Yes.””

“Who are you?””

The man didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward us.

I raised the flashlight like a weapon.

“Stop.””

He stopped.

“My name is Daniel Voss.””

He reached inside his jacket.

I tensed.

He slowly pulled out an old driver's license and held it up.

I didn't care about the name.

I cared about Lily.

She was staring at him with a strange expression.

Her lips parted.

“Daniel.””

His eyes widened slightly.

“You remember.””

“I…”

She pressed her fingers against her temple.

“You were at the white room.””

Daniel looked at Tara.

“I told you.””

Tara looked furious.

“You don't get to celebrate this.””

“This isn't a celebration.””

He looked back at Lily.

“It's a warning.””

“A warning about what?””

“Your mother.””

Lily's breathing changed.

“What about her?””

“She left something behind.””

“We know.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You know about the key.””

He pointed toward Room 341.

“You don't know what it unlocks.””

I looked at Tara.

“Did you?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel gave a humorless laugh.

“You always knew more than you admitted.””

Tara's face tightened.

“You weren't there.””

“No. But Claire told me what you did.””

“What I did?””

“You made a choice.””

“I saved Lily.””

“You saved one child.””

“And?””

“You left Claire.””

Tara's eyes filled.

“You think I don't know?””

“I think you remember every second.””

“Enough.””

Lily looked between them.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

“What happened to Claire?””

Daniel's expression softened.

“She disappeared.””

“We know.””

“No.””

He looked at Lily.

“You know everyone tells you she disappeared.””

She frowned.

“Didn't she?””

“No.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then what happened to her?””

Daniel looked down the corridor.

“Open the door.””

I didn't move.

“This is ridiculous.””

“Then walk away.””

He stepped to the side.

The corridor behind him was clear.

“You can take Lily and go home.””

Tara grabbed my arm.

“Marcus, don't.””

Daniel nodded toward her.

“That's exactly what she wants.””

“What does she want?””

“For this door to stay closed.””

“Why?””

“Because what's inside proves everything.””

Lily looked at me.

“Dad.””

I saw the fear in her eyes.

But underneath it was something else.

Determination.

“I want to open it.””

Tara grabbed her hand.

“No.””

Lily pulled away.

“Why?””

“Because you don't know what's inside.””

“Neither do you.””

Tara's mouth opened.

No words came.

Lily looked at me.

“Dad, please.””

I looked at the metal door.

341.

Three digits that had followed us through an entire night of lies.

I put the silver key into the lock.

It fit.

Tara whispered, “Marcus.””

I turned.

“I need you to trust me.””

She stared at me.

“I did.””

“Then trust me now.””

Her eyes filled.

“I don't know what you'll find.””

“Neither do I.””

I turned the key.

Click.

The lock released.

The door opened inward.

The smell hit us first.

Dust.

Paper.

Something metallic.

I raised the flashlight.

The room was small.

No windows.

A desk.

Two filing cabinets.

A wooden chair.

Several boxes.

And one large metal safe bolted to the floor.

The walls were covered with photographs.

Dozens of them.

Lily.

At different ages.

Five.

Seven.

Nine.

Eleven.

Thirteen.

Some were from places I recognized.

Her elementary school.

The park.

The old neighborhood where she had lived before us.

Others were places I'd never seen.

One photograph showed Lily asleep in the back seat of a car.

Another showed her walking into a courthouse.

One had been taken outside a hospital.

Lily stared at the wall.

“Why?””

I had no answer.

Tara covered her mouth.

Daniel walked into the room behind us.

“I told you.””

I turned on him.

“You did this?””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

“Open the safe.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You're really enjoying this.””

“No.””

His expression was completely serious.

“I'm terrified of what's in there.””

I looked at the safe.

“Do you have the combination?””

“Yes.””

“Then give it to me.””

He recited six numbers.

I entered them.

Nothing.

He looked surprised.

“Try again.””

I did.

Still nothing.

Tara stepped closer.

“Maybe it's not the number.””

“What else?””

“The date.””

“Which date?””

She stared at the safe.

“The night at the lake.””

She said the date.

I entered it.

Click.

The safe opened.

Nobody moved.

Inside were three things.

A black notebook.

A small silver flash drive.

And an envelope.

The envelope had Lily's name on it.

Her handwriting.

Her childhood handwriting.

I picked it up carefully.

“Lily.””

She took it.

She looked at the writing.

“I wrote this?””

“Yes.””

“I don't remember.””

Tara whispered, “Don't open it.””

Lily looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because maybe you weren't supposed to.””

Lily stared at the envelope.

Then tore it open.

Inside was a child's drawing.

A house.

A lake.

A truck.

And three stick figures.

Lily.

Claire.

And a man.

Beside the man's head, Lily had written:

*HE KNOWS WHERE IT IS.*

My throat tightened.

Beneath the drawing was another sentence.

Written in a child's handwriting.

*Mom said don't tell Tara.*

The room went silent.

Tara looked like she had been slapped.

Lily looked at her.

“You knew.””

“I didn't.””

“You knew something.””

“I didn't know what she was talking about.””

“You knew she was hiding something from you.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told Dad.””

Tara started crying.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed to the drawing.

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

“That isn't true.””

“Then why did Mom tell me not to trust you?””

Tara had no answer.

I opened the black notebook.

The first page contained a name.

*Claire Bennett.*

Underneath:

*Project 341*

I flipped through the pages.

Dates.

Addresses.

Bank transfers.

Names.

Initials.

And repeated references to something called “the archive.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What is Project 341?””

He didn't answer.

“What is it?””

“The archive.””

“What archive?””

“The one your daughter's mother took.””

I stared at him.

“You said she stole information.””

“She stole proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Daniel looked at Tara.

She whispered, “Fraud.””

“That's it?””

“No.””

She swallowed.

“Extortion.””

Daniel corrected her.

“Blackmail.””

I looked at the notebook.

“What kind?””

“Financial leverage against powerful people.””

“Politicians?””

“Some.””

“Business owners?””

“Yes.””

“Criminals?””

“Yes.””

I felt a chill.

“And your employer?””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

“Then you worked for them.””

“I did.””

“What happened?””

“I found out what they were doing.””

“And?””

“They found out I knew.””

That explained the fear in his face.

For the first time, I realized Daniel wasn't standing there because he believed he was untouchable.

He was afraid too.

“Why did Claire trust you?””

“She didn't at first.””

“What changed?””

“She knew I had access.””

“To what?””

“The archive.””

“What was in it?””

“Everything.””

“Where is it now?””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“That's what we've been trying to find.””

“Trying?””

“Yes.””

“For six years?””

“For longer.””

I turned toward Tara.

“You said Lily's mother disappeared.””

“She did.””

“She left the archive with Lily?””

“I think so.””

Daniel nodded.

“She hid the access key inside something the child would keep.””

I looked at the silver key.

“This?””

“No.””

He pointed to the flash drive.

“This is the record.””

I picked it up.

“What does it open?””

“Nothing.””

“What?””

“It contains one encrypted file.””

“Then why bring it?””

“I didn't.””

He looked at the flash drive.

“Claire did.””

“Where did she get it?””

“From your mother.””

I stared at the tiny device.

“Then why hasn't anyone opened it?””

“Because the password is tied to Lily.””

I looked at my daughter.

“How?””

Daniel shook his head.

“That's what we need to figure out.””

Lily stepped forward.

“Maybe I know.””

We all looked at her.

She closed her eyes.

“I remember the white room.””

Her breathing became shallow.

“There was a table.””

“Yes,” Daniel whispered.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“You asked me about a number.””

Daniel nodded.

“What number?””

“Three hundred forty-one.””

Lily opened her eyes.

“You asked me to remember it.””

“I did.””

“And I couldn't.””

“You were nine.””

“What happened next?””

“You started crying.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother had told you not to tell anyone.””

“About the key?””

“Yes.””

Lily stared at the flash drive.

“What did I say?””

Daniel hesitated.

“You said, ‘I know where it sleeps.’”

I felt a shiver.

“Where what sleeps?””

“The archive.””

“And where is it?””

Daniel pointed toward the notebook.

“We don't know.””

Lily took the flash drive from my hand.

She looked at it for several seconds.

Then her eyes widened.

“I remember.””

Tara stepped forward.

“What?””

Lily whispered, “The number isn't three-four-one.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“It's a date.””

Nobody spoke.

Lily turned to the notebook.

She started flipping pages.

“Here.””

She pointed.

An old entry.

*3/4/1*

Daniel stared.

“That isn't a date.””

Lily shook her head.

“It is if you're nine.””

I looked at the entry.

March fourth, year one.

That couldn't be right.

Then I noticed something beneath it.

A handwritten note.

*Use the child's version.*

My heart began pounding.

“What does that mean?””

Lily looked at me.

“The password.””

I stared.

“You remember it?””

“Not all of it.””

“What do you remember?””

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“My birthday.””

I froze.

Tara looked horrified.

“What?””

“My birthday.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Say it.””

Lily did.

Daniel's face changed.

He looked at me.

“That's it.””

“What?””

“The password.””

I inserted the flash drive into my laptop.

A single file appeared.

*341_ARCHIVE_FINAL*

I clicked it.

A password prompt appeared.

I entered Lily's birth date.

Nothing.

“Maybe it's not enough.””

Lily whispered, “Add the lake.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“The lake.””

I added the date of the night she disappeared.

The screen unlocked.

A folder opened.

There were hundreds of files.

Accounts.

Payments.

Photographs.

Names.

Contracts.

And one video.

The file name was:

*CLAIRE_LAST_MESSAGE*

I clicked it.

The screen filled with static.

Then Claire appeared.

Older than she was in the photograph.

Tired.

Terrified.

She looked directly into the camera.

“My name is Claire Bennett.””

Tara covered her mouth.

Claire continued.

“If you're watching this, then Lily is old enough to understand what happened.””

Lily stepped closer to the screen.

Claire's eyes moved directly toward the camera.

“I need Lily to know one thing.””

She took a breath.

“Her father is not the man she thinks he is.””

I looked at Tara.

Then at Lily.

My heart stopped.

Claire continued.

“Marcus, if you're watching this…”

The room seemed to shrink around me.

“…I'm sorry.””

Tara whispered, “Oh God.””

Claire looked into the camera.

May you like

“Your wife didn't choose Lily by accident.””

Then the video cut to black.
