Chapter 7: The Truth Buried Beneath the Harrington Name
Marcus Vale had built his reputation on one simple principle.
Never appear afraid.
For thirty years, he had sat across from executives, investors, and politicians who believed they could intimidate him.
They always failed.
Marcus understood something most powerful people never learned.
Fear was useful.
It made people careless.
It made them reveal their weaknesses.
And right now, Marcus knew exactly where Richard Harrington’s weakness was.
His wife.
His company.
His secrets.
Everything Richard had spent years protecting was beginning to collapse.
But Marcus had not expected one person to stand in his way.
Harrison Cole.
The name alone made experienced attorneys uncomfortable.
Not because Harrison was loud.
Not because he threatened people.
Because he didn’t need to.
He simply waited.
Collected evidence.
And destroyed people with facts they could not escape.
Marcus sat in his private office overlooking the city when his assistant entered.
“Mr. Vale?””
Marcus continued reading a report.
“Yes?””
“The situation with Harrington has changed.””
That made him look up.
“How?””
“His brother-in-law is involved.””
A small silence followed.
“Which brother-in-law?””
“Harrison Cole.””
For the first time in several minutes, Marcus stopped moving.
Not dramatically.
Not obviously.
But enough for his assistant to notice.
“That’s a problem?””
Marcus leaned back.
“No.””
A pause.
“It’s an inconvenience.””
The assistant hesitated.
“Should we be concerned?””
Marcus looked toward the window.
“No.””
Then he smiled slightly.
“People like Harrison Cole believe everything has a weakness.””
He picked up his coffee.
“They just forget that some people have spent their entire lives hiding theirs.””
Harrison spent the entire afternoon rebuilding the timeline.
Not the timeline Richard wanted people to believe.
The real one.
Six months before Khloe became pregnant.
Richard began transferring money.
Five months before the courthouse incident.
Richard began meeting Marcus Vale.
Four months before.
Unknown accounts appeared.
Three months before.
Richard’s relationship with Vanessa became public knowledge.
Two months before.
Documents were signed.
One month before.
Khloe discovered the affair.
Then came the courthouse.
A perfect explosion.
Too perfect.
Harrison stared at the timeline on his office wall.
Something bothered him.
It was not the money.
Not the affair.
Not even Marcus Vale.
It was the timing.
Everything had happened too close together.
Someone had created pressure.
And pressure made people make mistakes.
His phone rang.
Daniel.
“What did you find?””
Daniel’s voice sounded serious.
“I found something about Vanessa.””
Harrison sat straighter.
“Go on.””
“She wasn’t randomly connected to Richard.””
“What do you mean?””
“She was introduced to him.””
Harrison frowned.
“By who?””
A pause.
“That’s the problem.””
Daniel continued.
“We can’t find a direct connection.””
“That means someone worked hard to hide it.””
“Yes.””
Harrison looked at the files.
“Keep digging.””
“I already did.””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You’re not going to like this.””
Harrison said nothing.
“The person who arranged their first meeting was connected to Marcus Vale.””
Silence.
Everything shifted.
Again.
Harrison closed his eyes.
So Vanessa was not just an affair.
She was an entry point.
A distraction.
A way to keep Richard focused on something emotional while someone else moved behind the scenes.
“Find everything about Vanessa Kensington.””
“Her finances?””
“Everything.””
Daniel understood.
“Her family?””
“Yes.””
“Her history?””
“Yes.””
“Her relationship with Richard?””
Harrison paused.
“Especially that.””
At the hospital, Khloe sat with her daughter’s ultrasound picture in her hands.
The doctors had told her the baby was doing well.
Every time she heard the heartbeat, she felt like she was being given another chance.
A chance she almost lost.
She placed her fingers over the picture.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Not to the baby.
To herself.
For ignoring the signs.
For believing someone because she loved them.
A knock came at the door.
She looked up.
Vanessa Kensington stood outside.
Khloe froze.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then Vanessa said:
“I know I shouldn’t be here.””
Khloe looked toward the security guard outside.
Harrison had arranged protection after the incident.
But Vanessa had not come with anger.
She came alone.
“What do you want?””
Vanessa swallowed.
For the first time since Khloe had met her, she looked lost.
“I wanted to apologize.””
Khloe stared at her.
The words sounded strange coming from the woman who had caused so much pain.
“You pushed me down a staircase.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.””
“You could have killed my baby.””
“I know.””
The honesty surprised Khloe.
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I hate that I did it.””
Khloe said nothing.
“I was angry.””
“That doesn’t excuse it.””
“I know.””
Another pause.
“I thought I was fighting for him.””
Khloe looked at her.
“For Richard?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I thought he loved me.””
Khloe almost looked away.
Because that was the one thing they shared.
Both of them had believed Richard’s promises.
Both of them had trusted the same man.
“He told me you were already gone,” Vanessa whispered.
Khloe’s expression changed.
“He said you didn’t love him anymore.””
The words hurt.
Not because Khloe believed them.
Because she remembered all the nights she wondered if they were true.
Vanessa continued.
“He told me you were staying because of the baby.””
Khloe looked down.
“And you believed him.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
Silence.
Then Khloe asked:
“Why are you telling me this?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Because I think I was used.””
Those words caught Khloe’s attention.
“What do you mean?””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Richard didn’t just meet me.””
Khloe waited.
“Someone wanted us together.””
A cold feeling moved through the room.
“Who?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“You must know something.””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“Marcus Vale.””
Khloe’s face changed.
Because she had heard that name before.
When Harrison returned to the hospital, Khloe told him everything.
He listened without interrupting.
When she finished, he looked thoughtful.
“So Vanessa confirms the connection.””
Khloe watched him.
“You believe her?””
“No.””
The answer surprised her.
“Why?””
“Because believing her isn’t the point.””
Harrison looked at the window.
“The point is that her story matches the evidence.””
Khloe nodded slowly.
“You think she was manipulated?””
“I think everyone around Richard was being moved.””
“Like pieces?””
“Yes.””
She looked worried.
“Harry.””
He turned.
“What?””
“What happens now?””
Harrison looked at her.
The question was not about court.
Not about Richard.
Not about Marcus.
It was about whether her life would ever feel normal again.
“You focus on getting healthy.””
“And you?””
A faint smile appeared.
“I do what I do.””
She knew that answer.
It meant he would fight.
It meant he would not stop.
That evening, Richard met Marcus Vale in a private underground parking garage.
No cameras.
No witnesses.
Exactly how Marcus preferred it.
“You contacted my wife’s brother,” Richard said.
Marcus looked amused.
“I didn’t contact anyone.””
“You know Harrison is investigating.””
“Yes.””
“And you’re not worried?””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Richard.””
His voice was calm.
“You are making one mistake.””
“What?””
“You think Harrison Cole is your biggest problem.””
Richard stared.
“Isn’t he?””
Marcus smiled.
“No.””
A pause.
“Your biggest problem is that you still think you can control the situation.””
Richard’s face darkened.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying the time for hiding is over.””
Richard’s stomach tightened.
“You promised.””
Marcus looked at him coldly.
“I promised you an opportunity.””
“You said nobody would find out.””
“And nobody would have.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“If you had followed instructions.””
Richard clenched his fists.
“You’re threatening me.””
“No.””
Marcus smiled.
“I’m reminding you.””
Then he walked away.
Leaving Richard alone in the darkness.
For the first time, Richard understood something terrifying.
He had spent years fearing Harrison Cole.
But Harrison was not the person who trapped him.
Marcus was.
And now the only two men who could destroy him were moving toward the same truth.
One through justice.
The other through control.
Between them stood Richard Harrington.
May you like
A man who had built an empire.
And was finally discovering that everything he built was standing on a foundation of lies.
