Chapter 4: The Files That Revealed His Second Life

Khloe stared at the document in front of her until the words began to blur.

She recognized Richard’s signature.

She recognized the company name.

She recognized the amount.

But she could not understand the purpose.

A transfer of nearly two million dollars from Harrington Commercial Group to a private consulting company she had never heard of.

A company registered under a name that meant nothing to her.

A company that had no public office.

No employees listed.

No clear business operations.

Nothing except money moving in and out.

“Harry…”

Her voice was barely audible.

“Tell me I’m misunderstanding this.””

Harrison did not answer immediately.

And that silence hurt more than any explanation.

Because Khloe knew her brother.

Harrison was not a man who hesitated.

Not in court.

Not in negotiations.

Not when defending someone.

If he was choosing his words carefully now, it meant the truth was worse than she expected.

“I had my investigators look into Richard’s financial activity after what happened at the courthouse,” Harrison finally said.

Khloe looked away.

“You investigated my husband?””

“I investigated the man who put you in danger.””

“He’s still my husband.””

The words came out automatically.

But even Khloe heard how fragile they sounded.

Harrison softened.

“I know.””

For years, he had respected Khloe’s choices.

Even when he disagreed.

Especially when he disagreed.

But this time was different.

Because Richard had not only broken her heart.

He had put her life and the life of her unborn child at risk.

“The company behind this transfer,” Harrison continued, “was created three years ago.””

“Three years?””

Khloe frowned.

“That was when Richard started traveling more.””

Harrison nodded.

“Yes.””

A cold feeling moved through her.

The memories came back.

The sudden meetings.

The late nights.

The unexplained expenses.

The business dinners that lasted until morning.

She had believed him.

Because she wanted to believe him.

“What did he use it for?””

Harrison opened another file.

“We’re still investigating.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

His voice became serious.

“It isn’t.””

Khloe looked at him.

“Then tell me what you know.””

Harrison took a breath.

“The company appears to have been used to move money away from the main business.””

“Why?””

“We don’t know yet.””

“Harry.””

She looked directly at him.

“I need the truth.””

He held her gaze.

And for the first time, Khloe saw something she rarely saw in her brother.

Concern.

Not anger.

Not confidence.

Concern.

“That’s why I haven’t told you everything.””

Her stomach tightened.

“There’s more?””

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

“What?””

Harrison placed another file on the table.

This one was thicker.

“Richard wasn’t only hiding money.””

Khloe’s fingers tightened around the blanket.

“What else was he hiding?””

Harrison looked at the documents.

“People.””

The answer confused her.

“People?””

“Yes.””

He opened the file.

Inside were photographs.

Names.

Dates.

Records.

Khloe looked at the first picture.

Then froze.

A woman.

Young.

Beautiful.

Unknown.

“Who is she?””

Harrison watched her reaction.

“That’s what we’re trying to find out.””

Khloe looked through the pages.

More names.

More faces.

More connections.

Then she saw something that made her blood run cold.

A date.

A hotel.

A city.

Boston.

Her eyes lifted.

“Richard was there.””

Harrison nodded.

“Three months before he told you he was in Boston for a business conference.””

Khloe’s breathing changed.

Because suddenly, the affair with Vanessa did not look like the beginning.

It looked like only one chapter.

“How long?””

Harrison did not pretend not to understand.

“How long was he doing this?””

“We don’t know.””

“But you think…”

“I think Richard Harrington has been living a life you knew nothing about.””

Khloe looked down.

A painful laugh escaped her.

“That’s almost funny.””

Harrison frowned.

“Funny?””

“I spent six years trying to understand why my husband felt distant.””

Her eyes filled.

“I thought maybe I wasn’t enough.””

“Khloe.””

“I thought maybe after the miscarriages, he saw me differently.””

Her voice shook.

“I thought maybe he was tired of watching me struggle.””

Harrison leaned forward.

“Listen to me.””

She looked at him.

“You were fighting for a family while he was building a separate life.””

The truth hurt because it was simple.

No excuses.

No explanations.

Just reality.

Khloe covered her face with her hands.

For several moments, Harrison said nothing.

He knew there were moments when even the strongest person needed space to grieve.

But then something unexpected happened.

Khloe lowered her hands.

And her expression changed.

Not into anger.

Into clarity.

“Where is Richard?””

Harrison studied her.

“At his office, last I heard.””

“I want to see him.””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Khloe looked surprised.

“Harry.””

“No.””

“You can’t control me.””

“I know.””

His voice softened.

“But I can protect you.””

“I need answers.””

“You need rest.””

“I need the truth.””

Harrison looked at his sister.

And he realized something.

The woman lying in that hospital bed was not broken.

She was wounded.

There was a difference.

Khloe had spent years being underestimated.

By Richard.

By Vanessa.

By everyone who thought kindness meant weakness.

They were about to learn otherwise.

“Fine,” Harrison said.

“But you won’t go alone.””

Richard Harrington spent the afternoon trying to save his company.

Not his marriage.

Not his reputation.

His company.

The emergency board meeting lasted three hours.

Three hours of accusations.

Three hours of questions.

Three hours of people who once praised him now wondering if he had become a liability.

“This situation needs to be contained,” one board member said.

Richard stared across the table.

“Contained?””

The man avoided his eyes.

“You know what I mean.””

“Yes.””

Richard’s voice became colder.

“You mean my personal life.””

“No.””

The board member sighed.

“I mean the legal exposure.””

Richard leaned back.

“And if my wife had not survived?””

Nobody answered.

Because that question was uncomfortable.

Because everyone knew how close the situation had come to becoming something much worse.

The meeting ended without a solution.

Richard returned to his office alone.

For the first time in years, he felt powerless.

Then his phone rang.

Vanessa.

He almost ignored it.

Almost.

But he answered.

“What?””

Her voice immediately revealed panic.

“Richard, you need to help me.””

He closed his eyes.

“Vanessa.””

“No, listen to me.””

Her breathing was uneven.

“They’re saying I attacked her.””

“You did.””

The silence was immediate.

“You’re blaming me?””

Richard looked out the window.

“I’m saying you made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

Her voice rose.

“You told me she was going to leave you!””

Richard said nothing.

Because that was the problem.

He had told her that.

He had told Vanessa many things.

Things designed to make her stay.

Things designed to make her believe.

“I need a lawyer,” Vanessa said.

“I’ll find someone.””

“No.””

Her voice lowered.

“I need you.””

Richard closed his eyes.

That sentence annoyed him more than it should have.

Because Vanessa had never spoken like that before.

She had always been confident.

Independent.

Certain that he would choose her.

Now she sounded afraid.

“I have to go.””

“Richard—”

He ended the call.

Then immediately deleted the call history.

A habit.

One he had developed long before Vanessa.

A habit from a life filled with secrets.

But he did not notice the shadow outside his office door.

He did not notice the assistant standing there.

And he did not know she had heard enough.

That evening, Harrison arrived at Richard’s office with Khloe beside him.

The entire building changed when they entered.

Employees stopped talking.

Executives looked away.

Security guards straightened.

Everyone knew something serious had happened.

But nobody knew how serious.

Richard stepped out of his office when he saw them.

For a moment, he looked relieved.

“Khloe.””

She stared at him.

And something inside Richard shifted.

Because she looked different.

Not weaker.

Stronger.

“Are you okay?””

It was the wrong question.

Harrison noticed.

Khloe noticed.

Everyone noticed.

Richard realized too late.

Because the woman in front of him no longer needed him to save her.

She needed answers.

“I want to talk,” Khloe said.

Richard nodded slowly.

“Of course.””

They entered his office.

Harrison followed.

Richard immediately frowned.

“This is between my wife and me.””

Harrison closed the door.

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“It’s not.””

A long silence followed.

Then Harrison placed the file on Richard’s desk.

The same file that had changed everything.

Richard looked down.

And for the first time since the courthouse incident…

He looked afraid.

Because he recognized the documents.

He knew exactly what Harrison had found.

And he knew the secret he had spent years protecting was no longer hidden.

“Where did you get this?””

Harrison’s expression remained calm.

“That’s your first question?””

Richard said nothing.

Khloe looked at her husband.

“Richard.””

Her voice broke slightly.

“How long have you been lying to me?””

Richard opened his mouth.

But no answer came.

May you like

Because for the first time in six years…

He had nowhere left to hide.
