Calm

Chapter 14: The Final Target Was Never On The Range

Olivia Carter did not turn around immediately.

That was the first thing Marcus noticed.

Most people, after hearing someone say they were being followed, reacted with instinct.

They looked.

They searched.

They revealed what they were thinking.

Olivia did not.

She remained still.

Calm.

Controlled.

The same way she stood on the firing line before taking the shot.

Marcus watched her carefully.

“You still do that.””

Olivia looked at him.

“Do what?””

“Control your reaction before you control your situation.””

A small silence followed.

“Some things don’t change.””

“No.””

Marcus looked older.

Tired.

But his eyes were exactly the same.

“Some things never should.””

The words carried weight.

Because both of them knew how much had changed.

Years.

Loss.

Silence.

Betrayal.

Everything that had separated them stood between them now.

But for the first time in years, Olivia was standing face-to-face with the person she thought she had lost.

“You have a lot to explain.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know.””

“You disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked away.

For the first time, Olivia saw hesitation.

Not from fear.

From regret.

“Because if you knew I was alive, you would have searched for me.””

She stared at him.

“You knew I would.””

“Yes.””

“And you thought that was dangerous?””

“I knew.””

The answer was immediate.

That bothered her.

“You knew?””

Marcus looked at the empty range.

“Olivia, you were never the person they should have been afraid of.””

Her expression hardened.

“Then who?””

Marcus looked back at her.

“Everyone who thought they understood you.””

A sound came from the road.

A vehicle.

Marcus immediately moved.

“Down.””

Olivia reacted instantly.

Both dropped behind an old concrete barrier.

She looked at him.

“You still give orders.””

“And you still listen when they’re good.””

She almost smiled.

Almost.

The vehicle stopped near the entrance.

No one stepped out.

That was worse.

A person who wanted confrontation usually arrived openly.

A person who wanted control stayed hidden.

Marcus watched the vehicle.

“They’re not here to kill us.””

Olivia looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because if they wanted that, we wouldn’t be talking.””

She hated that logic.

Because it made sense.

The vehicle remained still for several minutes.

Then slowly drove away.

Olivia waited.

Marcus did too.

Finally, she spoke.

“Who was it?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not who.””

She frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you’re still asking the wrong question.””

The same words Whitaker had used.

The same idea.

Different person.

That bothered her.

“You and Whitaker agree now?””

Marcus looked at her.

“That’s what they want you to think.””

“Who?””

“The people who built this entire situation.””

Olivia tightened her grip.

“Stop speaking in riddles.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Fair.””

He took a breath.

“The person who betrayed us was never acting alone.””

She already knew that.

“But?””

“But the person controlling everything was not Whitaker.””

“Cross?””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Cross was useful.””

The word shocked her.

“Useful?””

“Yes.””

“Meaning?””

“Meaning he was allowed to be seen.””

Silence.

Marcus continued.

“Everyone needs someone to blame.””

Olivia understood.

A visible enemy.

A simple explanation.

A story people could accept.

“Cross was the enemy.””

“Yes.””

“But he wasn’t the real one.””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Marcus looked at her.

“The person who wrote the story.””

Back at the range, Brooks was losing patience.

Not because Olivia had gone.

Because he knew why she had.

And that made it worse.

“She shouldn’t have gone alone.””

Daniel stood nearby.

“You know her.””

“Yes.””

“Then you know stopping her was impossible.””

Brooks looked at him.

“That doesn’t mean I have to like it.””

Daniel looked toward the road.

“She trusts him.””

“Does she?””

Daniel paused.

Then answered honestly.

“Yes.””

That surprised Brooks.

“After everything?””

Daniel nodded.

“Because Marcus was the only person who never lied to her.””

Brooks looked at him.

“You’re saying that after admitting you hid information?””

Daniel accepted the criticism.

“Yes.””

A silence followed.

Then Brooks noticed something.

“You’re protecting Olivia.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because years ago, I failed.””

That answer was unexpected.

“What happened?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then:

“When the operation collapsed, Marcus told me to get Olivia out.””

Brooks listened.

“I chose the mission instead.””

A pause.

“And I lost both.””

The weight behind the words explained everything.

Daniel had not been searching for Olivia’s forgiveness.

He had been trying to earn his own.

Marcus finally told Olivia the truth.

Not all of it.

But enough.

“The operation was designed to expose corruption inside the system.””

Olivia frowned.

“Inside our own organization?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because someone was using information to control decisions.””

She thought of Whitaker.

Control.

Information.

Power.

“The operation was supposed to identify them.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Marcus looked away.

“We found them.””

Olivia waited.

“Then everything changed.””

“What happened?””

“Someone discovered we knew.””

“And they attacked.””

“Yes.””

“But Cross?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Cross was ordered to create confusion.””

Olivia stared.

“So he wasn’t the mastermind.””

“No.””

“Then why did he accept blame?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because he believed he could fix it.””

“And could he?””

“No.””

The answer was painful.

“What happened to him?””

Marcus was silent.

Then:

“He was removed.””

Olivia understood.

Not killed.

Not erased.

Removed.

Like Marcus.

Like others.

“Who did it?””

Marcus looked at her.

“You already know the name.””

Her heart stopped.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Olivia.””

“Don’t.””

Because she knew what he was about to say.

She did not want to hear it.

Not from him.

Not after everything.

Marcus spoke quietly.

“The person behind it all was someone who had access to every file.””

Her breathing slowed.

“Someone who knew every operation.””

Silence.

“Someone everyone trusted.””

Olivia looked at him.

“Who?””

Marcus answered.

And the world seemed to become quieter.

“Your mentor.””

The word hit harder than any name.

Because names could be enemies.

But mentors became part of who you were.

“General Whitaker?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Olivia froze.

“Then who?””

Marcus looked directly at her.

“Someone closer.””

At the range, the final piece arrived.

A message.

Not from Marcus.

Not from Olivia.

From an unknown source.

Brooks opened it.

A file.

A video.

He played it.

The screen showed a younger Olivia.

Training.

Learning.

Trusting.

And beside her stood the person who had shaped her career.

The person who had taught her everything.

The person whose voice she would recognize anywhere.

The recording began.

“I know she will become exceptional.””

Brooks felt cold.

Because he knew the voice.

Everyone did.

The person speaking was not Whitaker.

It was someone Olivia had never suspected.

Someone she had defended.

Someone who had guided her.

The video continued.

“She just needs the right pressure.””

The screen went black.

Daniel stared.

“No.””

Brooks looked at him.

“You know.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the screen.

His face was pale.

“The person who trained us.””

Olivia returned hours later.

Brooks saw her expression immediately.

She knew.

Before she said anything.

“You found him.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

She looked at Marcus’s rifle case.

Then at the ground.

“Everything we believed was wrong.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who?””

Olivia looked at them.

Her voice was quiet.

“The person behind everything…”

A pause.

“…was the one person who taught me how to survive.””

Nobody moved.

Because everyone understood the meaning.

The person who created Olivia Carter.

The person who shaped her discipline.

The person who made her into the shooter who could break records.

Was also the person who had been aiming at her life from the beginning.

That night, Olivia returned to the firing line alone.

The same range.

The same targets.

The same place where everyone had laughed.

She opened the rifle case.

The old rifle rested inside.

She touched it.

Not with sadness.

With understanding.

For years, she thought the hardest shot she ever made was hitting ten targets without missing.

She was wrong.

The hardest shot was always going to be this one.

Knowing where to aim.

Knowing who deserved the truth.

Knowing who deserved her trust.

A message appeared on her phone.

One final warning.

*Tomorrow, everything ends.*

Olivia stared at it.

Then looked across the empty range.

Tomorrow.

The final confrontation.

The final answer.

The final target.

And for the first time in years, Olivia Carter was not afraid of what she would find.

Because she finally understood something.

The person who betrayed her had spent years preparing for her return.

But they had forgotten one thing.

May you like

They had created the person who would come looking.

And they had created someone who never missed.
