Chapter 10: The Person Behind The Betrayal

Olivia Carter watched the video until the screen went black.

She did not move.

She did not immediately replay it.

She simply sat there in the darkness, staring at her reflection in the blank monitor.

For years, she had imagined what it would feel like to hear Marcus Vale’s voice again.

She imagined anger.

She imagined relief.

She imagined finally receiving the answers she had spent years searching for.

She never imagined feeling worse.

Because answers were supposed to close wounds.

But sometimes answers only revealed how deep the wound had always been.

Marcus was alive.

That fact alone should have changed everything.

But his message had created a bigger problem.

He had not returned to explain his disappearance.

He had returned to warn her.

The person who betrayed them was still out there.

And according to Marcus, that person was someone they trusted.

Someone close.

Someone who knew everything.

Olivia closed the laptop.

The room felt too quiet.

She walked to the window and looked outside.

The desert stretched beneath the moonlight.

Beautiful.

Empty.

Deceptive.

She had learned a long time ago that the most dangerous places were not always the obvious ones.

Sometimes danger looked familiar.

Sometimes it sounded like a friend.

Sometimes it stood beside you for years before you realized it was never standing with you at all.

Her phone buzzed.

Major Brooks.

She answered.

“Did you watch it?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Then you know.””

Olivia looked at the rifle case.

“I know Marcus is alive.””

“And?””

“And I know he’s afraid.””

Brooks was silent.

Because he had noticed the same thing.

“What are you going to do?””

Olivia did not answer immediately.

Because the honest answer was something she had spent years avoiding.

“I’m going to find him.””

Major Ethan Brooks arrived at Olivia’s house within the hour.

He found her sitting outside beside the old rifle.

Not holding it.

Just sitting near it.

Like it was a reminder.

Or a promise.

“You’re going after Marcus.””

Olivia looked at him.

“Yes.””

“You understand this could be a trap.””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t stop you?””

“No.””

Brooks studied her.

“Why?””

She looked toward the darkness.

“Because if someone wanted to trap me, they wouldn’t have to bring Marcus into it.””

That answer made him pause.

“What do you mean?””

“They know exactly what Marcus means to me.””

She looked back at him.

“They would use him if they wanted control.””

Brooks nodded slowly.

“And you think this is different?””

“I think Marcus is trying to warn me.””

“You trust him?””

Olivia looked down.

“That’s the problem.””

The answer surprised Brooks.

Because it was the first time she admitted uncertainty.

“I don’t know if I trust him.””

“Then why go?””

“Because I trust the person he was.””

Brooks understood.

Sometimes people were judged by the worst thing connected to their name.

Sometimes by the best.

Olivia was trying to figure out which version of Marcus was real.

Daniel Reeves was not happy when he heard the plan.

“No.””

Olivia looked at him.

“No?””

“No.””

“That’s not your decision.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You don’t know what you’re walking into.””

“I know enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice was sharper than usual.

Brooks noticed.

This was not disagreement.

This was fear.

Daniel rarely showed fear.

That made it important.

“Tell me,” Olivia said.

Daniel looked away.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“Marcus was not the only one who changed.””

Olivia frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means years change people.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t.””

He looked at the rifle.

“You remember Marcus before everything happened.””

Olivia stayed quiet.

“But you don’t know what happened after.””

The words bothered her.

Because they created doubt.

And doubt was exactly what she did not need.

“Where is he?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then handed her a piece of paper.

An address.

“He contacted you because he wants you to find him.””

Olivia took it.

“Why didn’t you tell me before?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because I didn’t know if you were ready.””

“And now?””

“Now I don’t think anyone is.””

The address led to an abandoned mining town several hours away.

A place forgotten by most maps.

A place where people went when they wanted to disappear.

Olivia drove.

Brooks followed.

Daniel came with them.

Nobody talked much.

The road was long.

The silence was heavy.

Ryan noticed them leaving.

He was near the range when Olivia’s truck passed through.

He watched until it disappeared.

He wanted to ask questions.

But he knew enough now not to.

Some battles were not meant for everyone.

The town appeared just before sunset.

Old buildings.

Broken roads.

Empty windows.

A place that looked like it had been abandoned decades ago.

Olivia stopped the truck.

She immediately noticed something.

“Someone was here.””

Brooks looked around.

“How can you tell?””

“Dust.””

He looked confused.

She pointed.

“Those tracks are recent.””

Daniel nodded.

“She’s right.””

They moved carefully.

The old habits returned instantly.

Brooks noticed.

Olivia was not just skilled.

She was experienced.

There was a difference.

Skill came from practice.

Experience came from consequences.

They reached the building marked on the address.

The door was unlocked.

Inside was almost empty.

A table.

A chair.

A few supplies.

And a message.

Olivia picked it up.

Only one sentence.

*I knew you would come alone.*

She froze.

Brooks saw it.

“Olivia?””

She handed him the note.

Daniel looked around.

“This isn’t Marcus.””

“How do you know?””

“Because Marcus would never make her feel watched.””

The statement was immediate.

Certain.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

Everyone reacted.

Weapons ready.

A figure moved.

Olivia stepped forward.

“Marcus?””

No answer.

Then the person appeared.

Not Marcus.

Someone else.

A woman.

Older.

Carrying a small bag.

She looked at Olivia with sadness.

“Your father would have hated seeing you here.””

Olivia froze.

Brooks noticed.

That name had not appeared before.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at him.

Then back at Olivia.

“My name is Evelyn Carter.””

Silence.

Olivia’s face changed.

Not fear.

Shock.

Because the woman standing in front of her shared her last name.

And because Olivia knew exactly who she was.

A person who was supposed to be dead.

The room became completely silent.

Olivia stared at Evelyn.

“No.””

Evelyn’s expression softened.

“I know.””

“You’re dead.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Evelyn looked down.

“I wish it was.””

Brooks looked between them.

“You know her?””

Olivia did not answer.

She could not.

Because some memories were too powerful to explain.

Evelyn Carter had been part of her childhood.

Part of her earliest memories.

Before the military.

Before the missions.

Before everything.

A person Olivia had lost long before Marcus.

Her mother.

The woman she believed died when she was young.

“You lied.””

The words left Olivia quietly.

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I had to.””

Olivia stepped back.

“No.””

Her voice became harder.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She looked between Evelyn and Daniel.

“Everyone has a reason.””

A pause.

“But nobody tells me the truth.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“You deserve the truth.””

Olivia laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it hurt.

“I’ve been hearing that a lot lately.””

Evelyn sat down.

The years between them filled the room.

“I wasn’t supposed to survive.””

Olivia said nothing.

“The people who wanted me gone believed they succeeded.””

“Who?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“The same person who betrayed Marcus.””

The answer hit immediately.

Brooks stepped forward.

“Adrian Cross?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone became still.

“Then who?””

Evelyn looked directly at Olivia.

And said the words Olivia had feared most.

“Someone who was never investigated.””

The room went quiet.

“Someone who everyone trusted.””

Olivia’s hands tightened.

“Who?””

Evelyn looked away.

“Your commanding officer.””

The answer felt impossible.

Because Olivia knew that person.

Trusted that person.

Learned from that person.

Believed in that person.

Brooks watched her reaction.

He knew immediately.

This was not just another name.

This was the center of everything.

“Who was it?”” he asked.

Evelyn looked at Olivia.

And Olivia whispered the name.

A name she had never allowed herself to question.

A name that had been part of her life for years.

A name that changed everything.

“General Thomas Whitaker.””

The moment the name was spoken, the past shifted.

Because the person Olivia trusted most…

May have been the person who destroyed everything.

And somewhere in the darkness outside, someone was listening.

May you like

Someone who knew Olivia Carter had finally found the truth.

Or at least the first piece of it.
