Chapter 12: The Conversation With The Man Who Knew Everything

General Thomas Whitaker chose the location carefully.

That was the first thing Olivia noticed.

It was not a coincidence.

People like Whitaker rarely did anything without a reason.

The meeting place was an old military training facility several hours outside the city. It had been abandoned for years, but the structure remained intact.

Concrete walls.

Empty classrooms.

Silent corridors.

A place built for preparation.

A place built for secrets.

Olivia stood outside the entrance with the rifle case in her hand.

Major Ethan Brooks stood beside her.

Daniel Reeves was behind them.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood what this was.

Not a conversation.

Not really.

A confrontation.

“You’re sure about this?”” Brooks asked.

Olivia looked at the building.

“No.””

That answer surprised him.

“You’re not?””

She shook her head.

“But I’m going anyway.””

Brooks nodded.

That was the thing about Olivia Carter.

She did not need certainty to move forward.

She needed a reason.

And right now, she had one.

The truth.

The doors opened before they reached them.

A security camera above the entrance moved slightly.

Whitaker was watching.

Of course he was.

Olivia walked inside.

The others followed.

The hallway smelled like dust and old memories.

Every step felt familiar.

Not because she had been there before.

Because places like this always felt the same.

Training rooms.

Briefing areas.

Places where young soldiers learned to trust instructions.

Learned to follow orders.

Learned to believe the people above them knew more than they did.

That was the dangerous part.

Trust was necessary.

But blind trust was a weakness.

A man waited at the end of the hallway.

General Thomas Whitaker.

Older than Olivia remembered.

Gray hair.

Slower movements.

But the same confidence.

The same calm expression.

The same eyes that once made people believe everything would be okay.

He looked at Olivia.

Not Brooks.

Not Daniel.

Only Olivia.

“You finally came.””

She stopped several feet away.

“You knew I would.””

Whitaker smiled slightly.

“Yes.””

The answer irritated her.

“You always did that.””

“Did what?””

“Act like you knew everything.””

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You’re angry.””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

That surprised everyone.

Whitaker continued.

“Anger means you’re still connected to what happened.””

Olivia’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t get to talk like you understand.””

“I understand more than you think.””

“No.””

Her voice became colder.

“You understood enough to manipulate everyone.””

The room became silent.

Whitaker looked at Daniel.

Then Brooks.

Then back to Olivia.

“So that’s what they told you.””

Olivia stared at him.

“They?””

“The people who gave you half the story.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t do this.””

Whitaker looked at him.

“You still protect her.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Someone has to.””

Whitaker almost smiled.

“That’s exactly the problem.””

Olivia felt something she did not expect.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Disappointment.

Because part of her had hoped Whitaker would deny everything.

She had imagined him angry.

Defensive.

Caught.

But instead, he stood there calmly.

Like he had expected this.

Like he had prepared for every accusation.

“You know why I came,” Olivia said.

“Yes.””

“Then answer.””

Whitaker nodded.

“Ask.””

She stepped closer.

“Did you betray us?””

Silence.

The question that had followed her for years.

The question that had shaped everything.

Whitaker looked at her.

Then answered:

“No.””

Nobody moved.

The answer was too simple.

Too confident.

Olivia almost laughed.

“That’s it?””

“Yes.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

The response surprised her.

“Then why say it?””

“Because it is the truth.””

She stared at him.

“You always did believe your own version.””

Whitaker sighed.

“Olivia, you still think this is about one person doing one terrible thing.””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

He looked around the abandoned facility.

“This was never about betrayal.””

“Then what was it?””

“Control.””

The word echoed.

Brooks watched carefully.

Because it matched everything they had discovered.

Whitaker continued.

“People think power comes from authority.””

He looked at Olivia.

“It doesn’t.””

“Then what does?””

“Information.””

Nobody spoke.

“Whoever controls information controls decisions.””

Olivia shook her head.

“That doesn’t explain what happened.””

“It explains everything.””

Whitaker walked toward an old training room.

They followed.

Inside were faded photographs on the walls.

Teams.

Units.

People who had once believed they were doing something important.

Olivia looked at them.

She recognized some faces.

Some were gone.

Some disappeared.

Some simply moved on.

Whitaker stopped beside one photograph.

“You remember this day?””

Olivia looked.

The image showed her team.

Marcus.

Daniel.

Others.

A younger version of herself.

Before everything changed.

“Yes.””

“You remember what you were told?””

She looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

“You were told there was a mission.””

“Yes.””

“You were told there was a threat.””

“Yes.””

“You were told the information was reliable.””

Olivia felt something shift.

“What are you saying?””

Whitaker looked at the photograph.

“I’m saying the mission was built on a lie.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel looked shocked.

“That’s not possible.””

Whitaker looked at him.

“You never asked enough questions.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Careful.””

“No.””

Whitaker’s voice remained calm.

“You all believed you were fighting an enemy.””

He looked at Olivia.

“You never considered that someone wanted you to believe there was an enemy.””

Olivia felt a cold feeling.

“Who?””

Whitaker looked at her.

“That is the question you should have asked years ago.””

Brooks interrupted.

“You’re saying someone manipulated the entire operation.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Whitaker looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody believed that answer.

Not completely.

“You expect us to believe you don’t know?””

Whitaker nodded.

“I expect you to believe that the world is more complicated than you want it to be.””

Olivia stared at him.

“You’re avoiding the question.””

“No.””

He looked directly at her.

“I’m answering it.””

She hated that possibility.

Because Whitaker sounded sincere.

And that was more confusing than a lie.

Evelyn arrived unexpectedly.

Nobody had called her.

Nobody had told her where they were.

But somehow, she was there.

Olivia turned.

“How did you find us?””

Evelyn ignored the question.

She looked at Whitaker.

“You shouldn’t have brought her here.””

Whitaker’s expression changed.

Not much.

But enough.

“You knew.””

Olivia looked between them.

“What?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Thomas was never the enemy.””

The words shocked Olivia.

“Then why did you tell me he was involved?””

“Because he was.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“He was involved.””

A pause.

“But not in the way you think.””

Olivia felt the ground shifting again.

“How many versions of this story are there?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the truth.

Everyone had a different piece.

Everyone believed they understood.

Nobody had everything.

Whitaker finally sat down.

For the first time, he looked tired.

Not weak.

Just tired.

“Olivia, I need you to understand something.””

She crossed her arms.

“I’m listening.””

“The person who betrayed your team did not do it because they hated you.””

“That makes it worse.””

“Yes.””

Whitaker nodded.

“They did it because they believed they were protecting something.””

“Protecting what?””

A pause.

“An operation.””

Brooks frowned.

“What operation?””

Whitaker looked at him.

“The one you were never supposed to know existed.””

The room became silent.

Daniel looked at Olivia.

She looked back.

Everything connected.

The missing files.

The hidden records.

Marcus disappearing.

The false information.

The years of silence.

There was something larger behind all of it.

Something nobody had been willing to reveal.

“Where is Marcus?”” Olivia asked.

Whitaker looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

She studied him.

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

For the first time, emotion appeared in his voice.

“Olivia, if I knew where Marcus was, I would have found him years ago.””

“Why?””

The question surprised him.

“Because Marcus was the only person who knew the entire truth.””

That sentence changed everything.

As they prepared to leave, Whitaker stopped Olivia.

“One more thing.””

She turned.

He looked at the rifle case.

“You still have it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She answered immediately.

“Because I promised.””

Whitaker nodded slowly.

“That’s why you were always different.””

Olivia frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means everyone else learned to forget.””

A pause.

“You learned to remember.””

She walked away.

But his words followed her.

Outside, the group stood silently.

Nobody knew what to say.

Finally, Brooks spoke.

“We have more questions than answers.””

Olivia looked toward the road.

“That’s normal.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You believe him?””

She thought about it.

“No.””

A pause.

“But I don’t think he’s lying.””

Nobody liked that answer.

Because it meant the truth was even more complicated.

As they drove away, Olivia looked back at the abandoned facility.

She had gone there expecting to confront the person responsible for destroying her past.

Instead, she discovered something worse.

The person she blamed might not be the person who caused it.

And the person who caused it might still be close.

Very close.

That night, while everyone searched for new information, one final message arrived.

This time, there was no hidden number.

No mystery.

No warning.

Only a name.

*Marcus Vale.*

And the message underneath contained four words:

*Do not trust them.*

Olivia stared at the screen.

Because after everything she had learned, there was only one question left.

May you like

Who was Marcus warning her about?

And why did he think she was still in danger?
