Chapter 9: The Fourteen Names

The hospital's emergency lights turned red.

A mechanical voice repeated the lockdown warning every thirty seconds.

Samuel pulled at the nearest security door.

It wouldn't move.

"There's another way out," James Miller said.

The elderly technician stood beside the open room, clutching his medical bracelet.

"Where?"" Elena asked.

"Through the old records archive.""

Samuel turned.

"That corridor is sealed.""

"Not anymore.""

James pointed toward a small maintenance hatch near the floor.

"They moved the patients through there when the hospital was operating. The ventilation system connects to the old laundry tunnels.""

Victoria glanced at the monitor.

Her mother was still visible.

"Can we get to her through there?""

James shook his head.

"Not directly. But I can take you to the records room. That's where they keep the original files.""

Samuel crouched beside the hatch.

"Why would the original records still be here?""

James gave a bitter laugh.

"Because the people running this place never believed anyone would come looking.""

He pulled a metal key from beneath his medical bracelet.

"Follow me.""

The hatch opened with a groan.

One by one, they crawled into the narrow passage.

Elena went first.

Victoria followed.

Behind her, Samuel helped James through.

The tunnel smelled of dust and old detergent.

Pipes ran along the ceiling, dripping water onto the concrete floor.

After several minutes, they reached a metal ladder.

James climbed first and pushed open a panel.

They emerged into a dark room filled with filing cabinets.

Thousands of folders covered the shelves.

Victoria stared at them.

"How many people?""

James looked around.

"Twenty-three years of records.""

Samuel switched on a flashlight.

"Find the original fertility program.""

Elena moved toward the cabinets.

"What's it called?""

James answered immediately.

"Project Genesis.""

Victoria turned.

"That's what my mother mentioned?""

"Yes.""

They began searching.

Samuel opened one drawer after another.

The labels included dates, medical codes, and patient numbers.

Then Elena found a cabinet marked GENESIS — FAMILY LINEAGE.

Inside were fourteen folders.

Each contained a photograph, a medical history, and a birth certificate.

Victoria opened the first.

A boy named Thomas.

Adopted by a wealthy family in Connecticut.

Second folder.

A girl named Rebecca.

Raised in London under a different surname.

Third.

A child listed as deceased.

Fourth.

Another child listed as stillborn.

Victoria's fingers moved faster.

"These children were all part of the same program?""

James nodded.

"Some were selected because of their biological parents. Others were used in experiments involving inherited medical traits.""

Samuel stopped at the final folder.

Its label read:

*GENESIS 001 — HALE / VANCE.*

Inside was a photograph of Margaret holding two newborn babies.

The same photograph Richard had shown Victoria.

But beneath it was a handwritten note.

*SUBJECT A: VICTORIA — APPROVED FOR PUBLIC INHERITANCE.*

*SUBJECT B: VERONICA — RETAINED FOR SECONDARY PROGRAM.*

Victoria felt sick.

"What does secondary program mean?""

James lowered his head.

"It means they were studying how the children responded to different environments.""

Elena turned toward him.

"Different environments?""

"One child was raised with affection and privilege. The other was placed in a controlled institution. They wanted to compare behavior, loyalty, intelligence, and emotional responses.""

Victoria stared at the document.

"Which one was I?""

James didn't answer.

Samuel turned another page.

The record showed that Victoria had been placed with Margaret and Richard.

Veronica had been transferred to a private residential facility at three months old.

But there was something else.

A signature appeared beneath the transfer order.

Robert Hale.

And below his signature was a second authorization.

*MARGARET VANCE.*

Victoria stepped away.

"My mother signed this?""

James nodded.

"She was told the other baby had died.""

Victoria's throat tightened.

"She believed Veronica was dead?""

"Yes.""

Elena took her hand.

"She didn't know.""

Victoria shook her head.

"Then why did she say she chose me?""

Before anyone could answer, a small printer on the desk suddenly activated.

A sheet of paper emerged.

Samuel grabbed it.

His expression changed.

"What is it?"" Victoria asked.

He read the heading.

"Emergency transfer order.""

The document authorized the immediate relocation of fourteen archived medical subjects.

It had been signed digitally by Daniel Vance.

The destination was a private facility in New Hampshire.

The transfer time was 11:45 p.m.

Victoria checked her watch.

11:12.

"We have thirty-three minutes.""

Samuel nodded.

"Daniel is moving the remaining witnesses.""

James shook his head.

"No. He's moving the patients.""

"What patients?""

James opened a second drawer.

Inside were current medical records.

Several names had been marked in red.

Some were the same names from the original folders.

Others were unfamiliar.

Victoria read the first line.

*PATIENT 001 — MARGARET HALE.*

Then the second.

*PATIENT 002 — VERONICA HALE.*

She looked at James.

"Why are they moving my mother and sister?""

James swallowed.

"Because they aren't just witnesses.""

He removed another document.

It was a laboratory report dated three weeks earlier.

The report concerned a compound called VX-17.

Victoria recognized the name from her poisoned gown.

Her stomach tightened.

"What is this?""

James pointed to the results.

"Your mother and sister have been exposed to the same chemical.""

Elena covered her mouth.

"How?""

"They were used to test the antidote.""

Victoria stared at him.

"Why would they do that?""

James looked toward the door.

"Because Daniel needed to know whether the compound could be reversed before he used it on you.""

Victoria felt her blood run cold.

The poisoned gown hadn't been an isolated attempt.

It had been the final stage of a long-running experiment.

And her mother and sister had been the test subjects.

Samuel took the report.

"Can the exposure be reversed?""

James hesitated.

"Possibly.""

"How?""

"The antidote was developed by Dr. Shaw.""

Victoria remembered Evelyn.

"Where is she?""

Samuel looked at the door.

"She stayed with Richard.""

James shook his head.

"Then we have a problem.""

He pulled another folder from the cabinet.

Inside was a photograph of Evelyn Shaw standing beside Daniel.

The date was two days earlier.

On the back was a handwritten note.

*ANTIDOTE FORMULA TRANSFERRED. ORIGINAL PHYSICIAN TERMINATED.*

Victoria's mouth went dry.

"Terminated?""

James looked at her.

"That's the word they use when someone disappears.""

A sudden crash came from the archive entrance.

Everyone turned.

The door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Her dark hair was tied back, and a long scar ran across her chin.

Victoria recognized her immediately.

Veronica.

Her hands were free.

She was holding a pistol.

"Don't move," she ordered.

Victoria stepped forward.

"Veronica?""

Her sister's eyes filled with tears.

For a moment, they simply stared at each other.

Then Veronica lowered the weapon.

"I've been looking for you.""

Victoria approached slowly.

"Daniel said you were his wife.""

"I was.""

"Did you know he planned to kill me?""

Veronica looked away.

"I knew he wanted your inheritance.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Veronica's voice broke.

"I didn't know about the poison.""

Victoria stopped.

"Why should I believe you?""

"Because I came here to save you.""

She placed a small silver key on the table.

"That opens the medical wing.""

Samuel stepped closer.

"Where's Margaret?""

Veronica looked at Victoria.

"She's in the transfer elevator.""

"What?""

"Daniel is taking her downstairs. He has the original trust documents, and he needs her to authorize the transfer.""

Victoria grabbed her sister's arm.

"Then let's go.""

Veronica shook her head.

"There's something you need to know first.""

She opened her coat and removed a folded sheet of paper.

It was a DNA report.

The results were conclusive.

Victoria and Veronica were identical twins.

But the final page contained another test.

A comparison between Daniel Vance and the two sisters.

Victoria read the results.

Then she looked up.

Her face turned white.

Daniel wasn't Richard's biological son.

He wasn't even Elena's biological son.

The report identified another man as his biological father.

*Robert Hale.*

Victoria's father.

Veronica whispered:

"Daniel is our half-brother.""

Before Victoria could respond, the hospital loudspeaker activated.

Daniel's voice filled the archive.

"Thank you, Veronica, for bringing them together.""

A heavy lock clicked behind them.

Then the lights went out.

May you like

And in the darkness, Daniel delivered his final announcement.

"Now that the entire family is assembled, it's time to finish Project Genesis.""
