Chapter 3: The Billionaire's Hidden Bloodline
Victoria didn't speak for nearly a minute.
The revelation seemed to have drained every ounce of color from her face.
"That's impossible," she finally whispered.
Elena sat motionless.
The old housekeeper looked suddenly exhausted, as though the weight of twenty-three years had finally settled onto her shoulders.
"His name is Daniel James Vance," Victoria continued.
"His father was Richard Vance. His mother died when he was a baby.""
Elena lowered her eyes.
"That's what the family told the newspapers.""
Victoria gripped the laboratory report.
"Are you telling me you gave birth to him?""
"Yes.""
"Then why are you working as a housekeeper?""
Elena looked toward the photograph on the bedside table.
"Because Richard Vance made sure I had no choice.""
She began speaking.
Twenty-nine years earlier, Elena had been a twenty-year-old nursing assistant at a private hospital in Boston.
She had met Richard Vance during his first marriage.
He was twenty-eight, ambitious, and already building the industrial empire that would eventually make him a billionaire.
His marriage was collapsing.
His wife, Margaret, was unable to have children, and Richard was desperate for an heir.
Elena had been young enough to believe his promises.
He had told her he loved her.
He had promised to leave his wife.
He had even rented a small apartment for them in Providence.
But when Elena became pregnant, everything changed.
Richard's lawyers arrived at her door.
They offered her money to disappear.
When she refused, Richard visited personally.
He placed a photograph of her newborn son on the table.
"Elena," he said quietly, "I can make sure this child has everything.""
"Then let me raise him.""
"You don't understand the situation.""
"He's my baby.""
Richard looked at her with cold eyes.
"If you tell anyone, I'll make sure you never see him again.""
Elena had been terrified.
She had no family, no money, and no protection.
Richard arranged for the baby to be registered as his legitimate son.
Margaret accepted the arrangement because it preserved the family inheritance.
Elena was given a position at Vance Manor.
She could remain near her child.
But she could never tell him the truth.
For years, she watched Daniel grow up.
She prepared his meals, helped him with his homework, sat beside his bed when he had nightmares, and secretly celebrated every birthday.
He called her Elena.
Never Mother.
When he fell from a horse at thirteen, she spent the entire night beside his hospital bed.
When he graduated from Harvard, she cried in the servants' kitchen.
When he became chairman of Vance Global, she watched his photograph appear on the cover of a business magazine.
And when Richard died, she discovered that the little boy she had once held in her arms had become the very kind of man his father feared.
Victoria listened without moving.
Then she asked the question that mattered most.
"Does Daniel know?""
Elena nodded.
"He found out three years ago.""
"How?""
"Richard left him a letter.""
Victoria stood abruptly.
"Then he knows you're his mother, and he still treats you like this?""
Elena gave a sad smile.
"He knows what I am. He simply doesn't care.""
Victoria looked down at the insurance agreement.
"Why would he kill Richard?""
Elena reached for the walkie-talkie.
"Because Richard discovered what Daniel had been doing with the company.""
She pressed the button.
"Samuel, are you still there?""
"Yes.""
"Tell her.""
A crackle followed.
Then Samuel Price spoke.
"Vance Global isn't just a manufacturing company.""
Victoria recognized the voice.
Samuel had been the company's former chief financial officer. He had resigned eighteen months earlier after Daniel accused him of financial misconduct.
"I've spent twenty years reviewing their accounts," Samuel continued.
"The company has been laundering money through medical suppliers, shell corporations, and offshore foundations.""
Victoria frowned.
"What does that have to do with the dress?""
"Everything. Vance Global owns the laboratory that treated the fabric. It also owns the insurance company holding your policy.""
Victoria looked at the document again.
"Daniel planned all of this?""
"Not alone.""
"Who helped him?""
Samuel paused.
"Your father.""
Victoria stopped breathing.
"My father is dead.""
"Your father, Robert Hale, signed the original agreement.""
She shook her head.
"No. My father was a respected attorney.""
"That's what he wanted people to believe.""
Samuel continued.
"Robert Hale was the legal architect behind the entire operation. He created the shell companies, protected the laboratories, and arranged the settlements for the families of people who died after exposure to Vance chemicals.""
Victoria felt the floor shift beneath her.
Her father had died when she was seventeen.
She remembered him as a charming man who brought her flowers every Friday and taught her how to play chess.
He had never mentioned Vance Global.
"You're lying," she whispered.
"I wish I were.""
Elena placed a hand over Victoria's trembling fingers.
"Your father and Richard were partners. When Richard tried to expose the operation, they decided he was a liability.""
Victoria looked at Elena.
"And Daniel?""
"Daniel inherited the business. But he also inherited the secrets.""
The walkie-talkie crackled again.
Samuel sounded increasingly distressed.
"Elena, we have another problem.""
"What?""
"The original recording isn't the only thing I found.""
"Samuel, what is it?""
"I found the wedding security plan.""
Elena's expression tightened.
"What security plan?""
"The one Daniel signed this morning. Every external camera will be disabled at 10:30 tomorrow. The staff entrances will be locked. The emergency medical team has been instructed to wait outside the property.""
Victoria slowly raised her head.
"Why?""
Samuel answered.
"Because the wedding isn't going to end with a marriage.""
A sudden crash echoed from somewhere above them.
The women froze.
Then came the unmistakable sound of heavy footsteps descending the basement staircase.
Elena grabbed the walkie-talkie.
"Samuel, someone's coming.""
"Get out of there!""
The footsteps stopped outside the apartment.
A shadow appeared beneath the door.
Victoria moved toward the window.
It was too small to climb through.
Elena quickly pulled the metal key from around her neck and inserted it into the cabinet.
Inside was a small black case.
She opened it.
There was a flash drive, an old photograph, and a handwritten letter.
"Take these," Elena whispered.
Victoria stared at the photograph.
It showed Richard Vance holding a newborn baby.
Standing beside him was a young Elena.
But there was another woman in the picture.
A woman Victoria recognized immediately.
Her own mother.
The photograph was dated twenty-nine years earlier.
Victoria turned it over.
On the back, someone had written:
*THE THREE PEOPLE WHO BUILT THE VANCE EMPIRE.*
Below that were three names.
Richard Vance.
Robert Hale.
Margaret Vance.
Victoria looked at Elena.
"Why is my mother in this photograph?""
Elena opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, the apartment door exploded inward.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
He wasn't wearing his suit anymore.
His white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and his right hand held a black pistol.
Two security guards stood behind him.
His eyes moved from Elena to Victoria.
Then to the photograph.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Finally, he smiled.
"Well," Daniel said, "I suppose it's time we stopped pretending.""
Victoria stepped backward.
"Daniel, what is this?""
He raised the photograph.
"You weren't supposed to see that.""
Elena moved in front of Victoria.
"Don't touch her.""
Daniel laughed.
"Still playing mother, are you?""
His gaze shifted to Elena.
"You should have stayed in your room.""
Elena's voice trembled.
"I changed your diapers. I held you when you had nightmares. I watched you grow up.""
Daniel's smile disappeared.
"And look how that turned out.""
He turned toward Victoria.
"Give me the flash drive.""
She clutched it against her chest.
"No.""
Daniel raised the pistol.
"Victoria. Don't make me ask twice.""
Then his phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
It contained a single photograph.
Daniel opened it.
His face suddenly lost its color.
The photograph showed Richard Vance sitting in his study, alive and well.
But the date printed beneath the image was six months after his supposed death.

And the message below it contained only one sentence:
*YOUR FATHER IS ALIVE, DANIEL. AND HE KNOWS WHAT YOU DID TO HIS SON'S MOTHER.*
