Chapter 11: A Mother's Final Signature

Margaret's feet touched the cold laboratory floor.

The IV line dragged behind her.

One of the technicians rushed forward, but she shoved him away with surprising strength.

"Don't touch me!""

Daniel stared at her.

"Mother, sit down.""

Margaret looked at him.

"You've been calling me Mother for twenty-eight years.""

Her voice shook.

"But you never once asked what I wanted.""

Daniel lowered his pistol.

"I did everything for this family.""

"No. You did everything for yourself.""

Margaret approached the scanner.

Victoria hurried toward her.

"Mom, you're weak. You need medical attention.""

Margaret touched her daughter's cheek.

"I've waited twenty-eight years to do this.""

She placed her hand on the authorization panel.

The machine scanned her palm.

A message appeared.

*FOUNDING MATRIARCH IDENTIFIED.*

*PROJECT GENESIS EMERGENCY AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED.*

Victoria looked at the screen.

"Do it, Mom.""

Margaret pressed the red button.

Nothing happened.

She pressed it again.

A new message appeared.

*WARNING: SHUTDOWN WILL PERMANENTLY DESTROY THE GENESIS ARCHIVE AND ALL ACTIVE EXPERIMENTAL SYSTEMS.*

*CONFIRM?*

Margaret looked at the documents scattered across the floor.

The records of fourteen children.

The medical files.

The forged birth certificates.

The names of people who had spent decades living under false identities.

She hesitated.

Daniel seized the opportunity.

"Don't do it!""

He stepped toward her.

"Mother, those records are worth billions.""

Margaret looked at him.

"They contain the names of children whose lives you destroyed.""

"They're assets!""

"They're human beings!""

Daniel raised his pistol.

Victoria stepped in front of her mother.

"Put it down.""

Daniel laughed.

"Move, Victoria.""

"No.""

"You're protecting the woman who abandoned you.""

Margaret closed her eyes.

"I didn't abandon her.""

Daniel turned.

"You signed the transfer papers.""

"Because Robert told me Veronica was dead.""

"You still signed.""

Margaret's face crumpled.

"Yes.""

For the first time, she didn't try to defend herself.

"I signed them. I allowed them to take my daughter. And I spent the rest of my life paying for that decision.""

Veronica approached.

"Why didn't you come looking for me?""

Margaret began crying.

"I did.""

"When?""

"Every year. I searched every institution, every private clinic, every adoption agency I could find.""

Veronica's expression hardened.

"And you never found me.""

"Robert made sure of that.""

Daniel laughed.

"Stop pretending. You were all willing participants. Father built the program.

Robert supplied the money. You provided the children.""

Margaret turned toward him.

"And you continued it.""

Daniel's smile vanished.

She pressed the confirmation button.

A loud alarm sounded.

*PROJECT GENESIS SHUTDOWN INITIATED.*

The lights flickered.

The glass observation room went dark.

A mechanical voice announced:

"Experimental containment systems deactivated.""

Daniel stared at the screen.

"No.""

He rushed toward the control panel.

Victoria grabbed his arm.

He swung around and struck her across the face.

She fell against the trolley.

Veronica lunged at him.

The two collided with a metal cabinet.

Daniel grabbed Veronica's hair and slammed her against the wall.

"You ruined everything!""

He raised his fist.

Then Elena appeared in the corridor.

She was holding a fire extinguisher.

"Get away from my son!""

She swung it with both hands.

The metal cylinder struck Daniel across the shoulder.

He stumbled backward.

His pistol hit the floor.

Elena stood over him, breathing heavily.

For several seconds, she stared at the man she had once carried as a newborn.

Daniel looked up.

"Mother?""

The word sounded strange coming from his mouth.

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"Don't call me that.""

He reached for her hand.

"Please.""

She stepped away.

"You had twenty-nine years to call me your mother. You chose to call me a servant.""

Daniel's face twisted.

Elena turned toward Victoria.

"Are you hurt?""

Victoria touched her cheek.

"I'll be fine.""

Samuel appeared at the corridor entrance, supported by James Miller.

Behind them were uniformed state troopers.

"Everybody down!"" an officer shouted.

Daniel looked around.

His guards had disappeared.

The technicians were surrendering.

The screens were shutting down one by one.

He looked toward the emergency exit.

Then he ran.

"Daniel!"" Samuel shouted.

Daniel sprinted toward the service corridor.

A trooper pursued him.

But before anyone could catch up, the building shook.

A deep explosion sounded beneath the floor.

The emergency lights went out.

Margaret collapsed.

Victoria rushed to her.

"Mom!""

Evelyn Shaw appeared from the opposite corridor, carrying a medical bag.

She dropped beside Margaret.

"Pulse is weak.""

Victoria grabbed her shoulder.

"Save her!""

Evelyn looked up.

"I'm trying.""

She examined Margaret's pupils, checked her breathing, and connected an emergency monitor.

Then she opened a small refrigerated case.

Inside was a glass vial.

The label read:

*VX-17 REVERSAL COMPOUND — FINAL FORMULATION.*

Victoria stared at it.

"Is that the antidote?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes.""

"Will it work?""

"I don't know.""

Elena looked at the vial.

"Where did you get it?""

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"I developed it.""

Samuel stepped closer.

"Then why did the records say you were terminated?""

Evelyn didn't answer.

Instead, she prepared the injection.

Victoria watched as the needle entered Margaret's arm.

A minute passed.

Then another.

Margaret's breathing became more regular.

Evelyn checked the monitor.

"She's responding.""

Victoria began crying.

Veronica took her hand.

For the first time, the two sisters stood together without suspicion or anger.

But the relief didn't last.

Samuel's radio crackled.

"Unit Three, report. Suspect Daniel Vance has escaped through the eastern service tunnel.""

Victoria turned.

"Where does that tunnel lead?""

James answered.

"Straight to the coastline.""

Samuel checked his tablet.

"There's a private helipad near the cliffs.""

Victoria looked at him.

"He's escaping?""

Samuel nodded.

"Not just escaping. He's taking something with him.""

"What?""

Samuel opened the live security feed.

A helicopter was already preparing for departure.

Daniel stood beside it.

In his hand was a black case.

James stared at the screen.

"That's impossible.""

Victoria stepped closer.

"What?""

James pointed toward the case.

"Those are the original Project Genesis samples.""

Evelyn's face drained of color.

"How many?""

James swallowed.

"All of them.""

Samuel looked at Victoria.

"If he gets those samples out of the country, he can restart the entire program somewhere else.""

Victoria stared at the helicopter.

"Then we stop him.""

Margaret weakly caught her wrist.

"Victoria.""

Her mother opened her eyes.

"There's something else in that case.""

Victoria bent closer.

"What?""

May you like

Margaret whispered:

"The real inheritance.""
