Chapter 9: The Second Baby
“Welcome home, Mom.””
The voice was so close that Evelyn stopped breathing.
It came from somewhere below the hidden staircase.
A girl.
Young.
Terrified.
Alive.
Evelyn gripped the railing.
“Lily?””
There was a pause.
Then the voice came again.
“Yes.””
Evelyn almost collapsed.
Cole caught her elbow.
“Easy.””
“I’m here,” Evelyn called into the darkness.
“I’m coming.””
“You shouldn't.””
The voice sounded different now.
Urgent.
“Why?””
“Because they followed you.””
Cole looked upward.
Through the narrow shaft behind them came the muffled sound of pounding.
Someone was trying to force open the hidden door.
Matthew drew closer.
“How long?””
Richard checked the mechanism.
“Maybe a minute.””
“Then we'd better use it.””
They descended.
The staircase was narrow and steep.
Cold air rose from below.
A dim yellow light flickered at the bottom.
Evelyn's heart hammered harder with every step.
She had spent twenty years believing her child was dead.
Twenty years of unanswered questions.
Twenty years of wondering whether something had gone wrong during the delivery, whether she had somehow failed without knowing how.
Now the truth waited at the bottom of a secret staircase her husband had hidden from her.
And beside that truth was a second baby.
Richard's baby.
Or so they believed.
The stairs ended in a concrete corridor.
A steel door stood ahead.
Lily was on the other side.
Evelyn rushed forward.
“Lily!””
“Mom, wait.””
A lock clicked.
The door opened barely six inches.
A young woman peered through.
She had dark brown hair tied messily behind her head.
Pale skin.
Tired eyes.
And a small scar across the bridge of her nose.
Evelyn stared at her.
Something inside her recognized the face before her mind did.
She whispered,
“Oh my God.””
Lily's eyes filled.
“You really came.””
Evelyn reached through the opening.
Lily immediately grabbed her hand.
The moment their fingers touched, Evelyn broke down.
Twenty years vanished.
“I thought you died.””
“I know.””
“I looked for you.””
“I know.””
“Who told you I was dead?””
Lily looked toward Richard.
“He did.””
Evelyn turned.
Richard's face was gray.
“Lily…”
She stepped through the doorway.
She was twenty.
Beautiful in a quiet, exhausted way.
She wore a faded sweatshirt and jeans.
No jewelry.
No makeup.
Just a hospital identification bracelet still around one wrist.
Evelyn couldn't stop staring.
“You're my daughter.””
Lily nodded.
“Yes.””
Evelyn touched her cheek.
Lily closed her eyes.
For a second, mother and daughter simply stood there.
Then Evelyn pulled her into her arms.
Lily began sobbing.
“So many times,” she whispered into Evelyn’s shoulder.
“I wanted to find you.””
Evelyn held her tighter.
“I never stopped loving you.””
“You didn't know me.””
“I didn't need to.””
Lily cried harder.
Behind them, someone whispered,
“Beautiful.””
Everyone turned.
It was Ethan.
He stood at the far end of the corridor.
He looked pale but steady.
The photograph had not captured how young he really was.
He looked seventeen.
But his eyes looked much older.
Lily wiped her tears.
“Ethan.””
He nodded.
“Hi.””
Evelyn looked between them.
“You know each other.””
Lily nodded.
“We grew up together.””
“Together?””
Meredith stepped through the doorway behind them.
“Like I told you.””
She looked at Evelyn.
“I raised them both.””
Evelyn stared at her.
“In the same house?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Meredith's voice broke.
“Because Daniel made me promise.””
Evelyn looked at Lily.
“Did you know who I was?””
Lily hesitated.
“Not at first.””
“When did you find out?””
“Six months ago.””
Evelyn's heart tightened.
“How?””
“Daniel left me a letter.””
“Before he died?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you come to me?””
Lily looked away.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“The first time was three months ago.””
“Three months.””
“The day of his funeral.””
Evelyn stared.
“I never saw you.””
“You weren't supposed to.””
“Who stopped you?””
Lily looked toward Richard.
“He did.””
Richard's eyes closed.
Evelyn slowly turned.
“Again?””
Richard whispered,
“I had a reason.””
“You always have a reason.””
“I was protecting you.””
“From my own daughter?””
“From what came with her.””
Ethan walked closer.
“He wasn't protecting you.””
Richard looked at him.
“Ethan—”
“He was protecting the trust.””
Richard said nothing.
Cole stepped between them.
“Let's start there.””
He looked at Lily.
“What is this trust?””
Lily pointed toward the steel room.
“Everything Daniel owned outside the public estate.””
Edward entered behind them.
He stared at the hidden chamber.
“So it was real.””
Lily nodded.
“More than real.””
“What does it contain?””
“Records.””
“Of the company?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
“People.””
Edward frowned.
“People?””
“Names. Births. Adoptions.
Payments. Transfers. Agreements.””
Edward slowly understood.
“Evidence.””
Lily nodded.
“Daniel told me the Harrington fortune was built by stealing from people who couldn't fight back.””
Evelyn looked toward Richard.
“You knew?””
“I learned some of it.””
“How much?””
“Not enough.””
Lily walked to a metal cabinet.
“Daniel found everything.””
She opened it.
Inside were hundreds of folders.
Each one carefully labeled.
Evelyn saw names.
Families.
Dates.
Addresses.
Payments.
Some records were decades old.
Cole picked up one file.
“What's this?””
Lily glanced at it.
“A farm.””
“Whose?””
“A family named Bennett.””
Cole opened the file.
The documents showed a land transfer.
A suspicious foreclosure.
A shell company.
Then a final note:
*Property acquired through Harrington intermediary.*
He looked at Edward.
“This goes back thirty years.””
Edward nodded slowly.
“Longer.””
“Daniel knew?””
“Apparently.””
Lily said,
“He wanted to expose them.””
“Who?””
“The people running the trust.””
Cole frowned.
“Who runs it now?””
Lily looked at Richard.
Richard didn't move.
“You're looking at him.””
Evelyn stared.
“What?””
Richard's face tightened.
“I was only the temporary trustee.””
“According to who?””
“Daniel.””
“Why?””
“Because the original trustee disappeared.””
“Who?””
Richard said quietly,
“Laura.””
Evelyn turned toward the woman at the entrance.
Laura was standing there.
The knife was gone.
She looked older now.
More tired.
She descended the final steps.
“Daniel thought I was dead.””
Evelyn stared.
“Were you?””
Laura gave a faint smile.
“For a while, I wished I was.””
Richard looked at her.
“You're the trustee?””
“I was.””
“What happened?””
“Daniel asked me to take over.””
“But you disappeared.””
“Because someone tried to kill me.””
Evelyn's chest tightened.
“Who?””
Laura looked toward the folders.
“The same person who tried to kill Daniel.””
Cole asked,
“And who is that?””
Laura didn't answer.
Instead, she walked to the center of the room.
“Richard.””
He looked at her.
“You need to tell them.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“I can't.””
“You have to.””
“Not yet.””
Laura shook her head.
“They're already here.””
Everyone heard it.
A heavy thump came from above.
The hidden door.
Someone had found the mechanism.
Matthew looked at the staircase.
“We have company.””
Laura nodded.
“That was always going to happen.””
Cole looked at Richard.
“What's in the trust?””
Richard stared at Evelyn.
“Everything Daniel was afraid would be discovered.””
“And?””
“His father's crimes.””
Evelyn looked confused.
“Your husband's father?””
“Yes.””
“What did he do?””
Richard swallowed.
“He arranged illegal property seizures.””
“How?””
“By creating debt.””
Edward looked shocked.
“Your grandfather?””
Richard nodded.
“He would lend desperate families money through shell companies. Then he would deliberately manipulate the interest. When they couldn't pay, the properties were seized.””
Evelyn looked sick.
“And Daniel found proof.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't he go to the police?””
“Because the people involved were still protected.””
“By who?””
Richard's eyes moved to the ceiling.
“Judges. Lawyers. Bank officers. Politicians.””
Cole's expression hardened.
“Who was the mastermind?””
Richard shook his head.
“Daniel didn't know.””
Laura said quietly,
“I did.””
Everyone turned.
“Who?””
Laura walked to a box marked D-17.
She opened it.
Inside was a stack of photographs.
She spread them across the table.
Men.
Women.
Meetings.
Payments.
One photograph showed Richard shaking hands with an older man.
Another showed Meredith.
Another showed Nathan.
Then Evelyn saw one she had never seen before.
Daniel.
Sitting across a table from someone whose face had been scratched out.
On the table between them was a folder.
And beside the folder was the silver key.
Evelyn touched the photograph.
“Who is that?””
Laura shook her head.
“Daniel never told me.””
Richard stared at it.
“I know.””
Everyone looked at him.
“You know who that is?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Richard swallowed.
“Daniel's father.””
Evelyn stared.
“But he's dead.””
“He's supposed to be.””
Silence.
Cole stepped closer.
“What do you mean?””
Richard pointed to the timestamp.
The photograph had been taken eighteen months after Daniel's father supposedly died.
Evelyn's voice trembled.
“So he faked his death?””
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
“I don't know.””
Laura laughed bitterly.
“He was never gone.””
Richard looked at her.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn't tell Daniel?””
“I did.””
“Then why did he keep investigating?””
“Because your father killed someone.””
Richard froze.
“Who?””
Laura looked at Evelyn.
“Your husband's first wife.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“You?””
Laura smiled sadly.
“No.””
“Then who?””
“My sister.””
Richard looked horrified.
“Laura…”
“She found out what they were doing.””
“And?””
“They killed her.””
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Daniel had spent years trying to uncover the truth.
Not because of money.
Because someone in his family had murdered a woman.
A woman no one had even remembered.
Then Lily spoke.
“There was another reason.””
Everyone looked at her.
“Daniel wasn't just protecting the trust.””
She reached beneath the cabinet.
Pulled out a thin black file.
And handed it to Evelyn.
“This was about you.””
Evelyn opened it.
The first page was a medical report from twenty years earlier.
She recognized the hospital name.
Her hands began shaking.
The delivery date.
Her name.
Daniel's name.
And beneath it:
*TWIN LIVE BIRTHS.*
She stopped breathing.
“No.””
Lily stood beside her.
“That's why they lied.””
Evelyn looked up.
“Twins?””
Lily nodded.
“You had two babies.””
“Who were they?””
Lily pointed at Ethan.
“Him.””
Evelyn turned.
Ethan looked confused.
“And me?””
Lily nodded.
“You.””
Evelyn's mind raced.
“But I gave birth to…”
“You were told one child was stillborn.””
Evelyn looked at Richard.
“That's what happened.””
Richard could barely speak.
“Daniel took the second baby.””
“Why?””
“Because the first baby was sick.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“I was the sick one?””
Richard nodded.
“You were born with a heart defect.””
“And she?””
“Lily was healthy.””
Evelyn stared at both young people.
Twin children.
Separated from birth.
One raised by Meredith.
The other hidden away.
Her entire life had been built around a lie.
“Why?”” she whispered.
Richard finally gave her the answer.
“Because Daniel believed your father-in-law would use the children against you.””
“My father-in-law?””
“Yes.””
“He wanted the trust.””
“Yes.””
“Why would a child matter?””
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
“Because only your children could legally inherit it.””
Evelyn looked at the files.
“What happened to Lily?””
“Daniel gave her to Meredith.””
“And Ethan?””
“I stayed with him.””
“You raised him?””
Richard nodded.
“For a while.””
Evelyn stared at him.
Then something hit her.
“Nathan.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“What about him?””
“He knew everything.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he disappear?””
Richard looked at Laura.
Laura answered.
“Because Nathan was the one who discovered who was ordering the attacks.””
“Who?””
A voice came from the staircase.
Everyone froze.
Someone was standing at the top.
A gunshot fired.
The bullet hit the metal cabinet.
Ethan screamed.
Cole pushed Evelyn and Lily behind the table.
Matthew rushed toward the stairs.
“Stay down!””
Another shot.
Then a man's voice echoed through the darkness.
“Richard!””
Richard looked up.
The voice continued.
“You've had twenty years.””
A pause.
“Now give me the children.””
Richard's face collapsed.
Evelyn stared at him.
“You know him.””
Richard whispered,
“Yes.””
“Who is it?””
He looked at her.
“The man Daniel spent twenty years trying to stop.””
The figure stepped into the light.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Expensive black coat.
A familiar face.
Evelyn stared.
She had seen him in photographs.
At weddings.
At funerals.
At family dinners.
The man standing above them was someone she had trusted for years.
Her husband's uncle.
Thomas Harrington.
And beside him stood Nathan Cole.
Alive.
Bleeding from the shoulder.
Holding a gun.
Evelyn could barely breathe.
Nathan looked down at them.
“Mrs. Harrington…”
He shook his head.
“I am so sorry.””
Thomas smiled.
“You should be.””
Then he pointed his gun at Ethan.
“Because before midnight, one of these children is going to tell me where Daniel hid the original trust.””
May you like
Thomas's smile faded.
“And the other one isn't leaving this room alive.””
