Chapter 5: The Hospital Room With No Patient
The hospital was less than fifteen minutes away.
It felt like an hour.
Evelyn sat in the passenger seat of Cole’s pickup, gripping the silver key so tightly it left a red mark in her palm.
Richard sat in the back.
The others followed in a second vehicle with Edward and Meredith.
Nobody spoke.
The message on Evelyn’s phone remained open.
*BRING RICHARD WITH YOU.*
*HE OWES ETHAN THE TRUTH.*
*AND BEFORE MIDNIGHT, ONE OF THEM WILL BE DEAD.*
Cole glanced at the screen.
“You should turn the phone off.””
“What if they message again?””
“They probably will.””
“Then I need to see it.””
“Not while we're driving.””
Evelyn looked out the window.
Streetlights streaked across the glass.
“Cole?””
“Yeah?””
“Do you think Ethan is actually there?””
Cole kept his eyes on the road.
“I don't know.””
“My husband believed that boy was his son.””
“Seems like Daniel believed a lot of things other people didn't want him to know.””
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“That's what scares me.””
Cole looked at her.
“What?””
“What if my husband wasn't protecting Ethan from his family?””
She swallowed.
“What if he was protecting Ethan from himself?””
Cole frowned.
Before he could answer, Richard spoke from the back.
“He wasn't.””
Evelyn turned.
Richard sat with his elbows on his knees, staring at the floor.
“He loved that kid.””
“How would you know?””
“Because I saw him with him.””
Evelyn's expression tightened.
“When?””
Richard hesitated.
“The first time Daniel brought him home.””
Her heart stopped.
“Home?””
Richard nodded.
“He brought Ethan to the Harrington house.””
“You said Daniel kept him hidden.””
“He did.””
“Then why bring him home?””
“Because you weren't there.””
Evelyn stared.
Richard continued.
“You were visiting your sister for the weekend.””
“Where was Daniel?””
“He told everyone he had a business meeting.””
“But he brought Ethan there?””
“For a few hours.””
Evelyn looked out the windshield.
“Why?””
“He wanted Ethan to see where his father lived.””
“His father.””
Richard said the words slowly.
“That's what Ethan believed.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“What happened?””
“Daniel took him upstairs.””
“To our bedroom?””
Richard nodded.
Evelyn's voice cracked.
“Why?””
“He wanted to show Ethan the family photographs.””
“Why would he do that?””
“Because Ethan kept asking questions.””
“What kind?””
Richard looked at her.
“The kind a ten-year-old asks when he knows his mother is hiding something.””
Evelyn remembered Meredith's face.
“How long did you know the boy existed?””
Richard hesitated.
“Two years.””
She turned sharply.
“Two years before Daniel died?””
“Yes.””
“You knew for two years?””
“I didn't know he was mine.””
“But you knew about Ethan.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Richard looked exhausted.
“Because every time I tried, Daniel stopped me.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed you were already in danger.””
Evelyn's heart sank.
“From your family?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
“Then from who?””
Richard stared at her.
“I don't know.””
Cole glanced at him in the mirror.
“Funny.””
Richard frowned.
“What?””
“You know a lot for a man who doesn't know anything.””
Richard looked away.
The hospital appeared ahead.
A tall white building glowing against the night.
Cole pulled into the emergency entrance.
Before the pickup had completely stopped, Evelyn had her seat belt off.
“Wait,” Cole said.
She stopped.
“What?””
“Let us go first.””
“I want to see him.””
“You will.””
Cole looked at Richard.
“But we're not walking into a room blind.””
Richard opened the door.
“I know this hospital.””
Cole turned.
“How?””
Richard froze.
Then he said, “Ethan was treated here.””
Cole's eyes narrowed.
“How many times?””
Richard didn't answer.
Cole stepped out.
“That's what I thought.””
The second vehicle pulled in behind them.
Matthew and the gray-bearded biker got out first.
Edward followed.
Meredith came last.
They entered the hospital together.
The emergency department was surprisingly quiet.
A security guard looked up.
Evelyn approached the reception desk.
“I'm here to see Ethan Vale.””
The nurse typed something into the computer.
She frowned.
“I'm sorry?””
“Ethan Vale.””
The nurse searched again.
“Date of birth?””
“I don't know.””
“Mother's name?””
“Meredith Vale.””
The nurse typed.
Then paused.
She looked up.
“I don't have a patient under that name.””
Evelyn's heart sank.
“That can't be right.””
Meredith stepped forward.
“He was admitted six weeks ago.””
The nurse looked at her.
“Ma'am, I don't see him.””
Meredith reached for the desk.
“Please check again.””
The nurse searched more carefully.
“No Ethan Vale.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Maybe he's under another name.””
The nurse turned toward him.
“Are you family?””
Richard hesitated.
“Yes.””
She looked down at the screen.
“What name?””
“Ethan Harrington.””
The nurse searched again.
Nothing.
Richard’s face changed.
Cole noticed.
“Try Daniel Harrington.””
The nurse looked puzzled.
“Why?””
“Just do it.””
She searched.
The computer remained blank.
“Nothing.””
Meredith whispered, “That's impossible.””
A second nurse walked over.
“What's going on?””
The first nurse explained.
The second checked the system.
Then she looked at Meredith.
“You said Ethan was admitted six weeks ago?””
“Yes.””
“Which department?””
“Cardiology.””
The nurse nodded.
“That helps.””
She typed again.
This time, the screen changed.
Her expression became confused.
“There's a record.””
Meredith exhaled.
“Thank God.””
The nurse frowned.
“But it says the patient was discharged.””
“When?””
“Four days ago.””
Meredith stared.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That's impossible. I spoke to his doctor yesterday.””
The nurse turned the screen slightly.
“According to this, Ethan Vale was discharged at 9:17 p.m. four days ago.””
“With whom?””
The nurse hesitated.
“That's the strange part.””
“What?””
“There isn't a discharge signature.””
“What?””
“The record shows the discharge order.””
She looked around.
“But there's no physician signature, no family signature, and no transportation record.””
Edward stepped closer.
“Could the record have been altered?””
The nurse looked uncomfortable.
“I can't speculate.””
“Please check the medical chart.””
“I don't have access to everything from this desk.””
“Who does?””
The nurse pointed toward a secured hallway.
“Medical records.””
Richard moved toward it.
Cole stopped him.
“Where are you going?””
“To find out where Ethan went.””
“Wait.””
Richard turned.
“What?””
Cole stared at him.
“You seem very familiar with this hospital.””
Richard said nothing.
“Which floor?””
Richard looked away.
“Fourth.””
The nurse blinked.
“Cardiology is on four.””
Richard nodded.
Cole watched him.
“How convenient.””
They took the elevator.
Nobody spoke.
The fourth floor was almost empty.
The nurses’ station was dimly lit.
A young nurse looked up.
“Can I help you?””
Meredith rushed forward.
“Ethan Vale.””
The nurse's expression changed.
“Who are you?””
“His mother.””
The nurse stared.
Then looked at the others.
“Please wait here.””
She disappeared into a back office.
A minute later, she returned with a doctor.
The doctor was in his fifties.
He looked exhausted.
“Mrs. Vale?””
“Yes.””
“I need to talk to you privately.””
“No.””
Meredith stepped closer.
“Where is my son?””
The doctor lowered his voice.
“I don't know.””
Meredith stared.
“What do you mean you don't know?””
“We had him under observation.””
“And?””
“He was transferred.””
“To another hospital?””
The doctor hesitated.
“No.””
“Then where?””
“I can't tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because the transfer wasn't authorized by me.””
Edward stepped forward.
“Doctor, I'm Edward Grant. I'm representing the Harrington estate.””
The doctor looked at him.
“Why would a lawyer be involved?””
“Because Ethan may be connected to a deceased client.””
The doctor frowned.
“Daniel Harrington?””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“That was my husband.””
The doctor's expression changed.
“I didn't know you were here.””
“How did you know Daniel?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“He visited Ethan.””
Evelyn's chest tightened.
“How many times?””
The doctor didn't answer.
“How many?””
“At least once a month.””
“For seven years?””
The doctor looked at her.
“Yes.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Daniel had built an entire secret life.
And now she was discovering it one piece at a time.
“Did Daniel know Ethan was sick?””
“Yes.””
“Did he pay for his treatment?””
“Yes.””
“Did he ever bring Richard?””
The doctor looked at Richard.
Then back at Evelyn.
“No.””
Richard stepped forward.
“I was never involved in Ethan's medical care.””
The doctor studied him.
“You're Richard Harrington.””
Richard nodded.
“I know you.””
Cole immediately stiffened.
“How?””
The doctor answered before Richard could.
“You came here the night Ethan disappeared.””
Everyone froze.
Richard's face turned white.
“I wasn't here.””
The doctor frowned.
“You were.””
“No.””
“You were standing outside this department.””
Richard shook his head.
“I've never been to this hospital.””
The doctor looked confused.
“You're sure?””
“Yes.””
The doctor looked at his tablet.
“The security footage shows you.””
Cole stepped between them.
“Can we see it?””
The doctor hesitated.
“I don't have access.””
“Who does?””
“Hospital security.””
Cole turned toward the nurse.
“Get them.””
The nurse looked nervous.
“Now?””
“Yes.””
The nurse hurried away.
Richard stared at the floor.
Evelyn looked at him.
“You lied.””
He looked up.
“I was here.””
“Why?””
“I came to see Daniel.””
“What does Daniel have to do with Ethan disappearing?””
Richard's face tightened.
“The night Ethan disappeared wasn't the first time someone tried to take him.””
Evelyn's blood chilled.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“Six months ago, Daniel asked me to help.””
“With what?””
“Moving Ethan.””
“Moving him where?””
“Somewhere safe.””
“Did you?””
Richard looked at Meredith.
“I tried.””
She stepped toward him.
“You told me you couldn't.””
“I couldn't.””
“Why?””
“Because they found us.””
“Who?””
Richard closed his eyes.
“I don't know.””
Evelyn stared.
“You keep saying that.””
Richard looked at her.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That if I told you, you'd become a target too.””
Evelyn's voice shook.
“You should have trusted me.””
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
A security guard suddenly appeared.
“Mr. Grant?””
Edward turned.
“Yes?””
“You asked for surveillance footage.””
“Yes.””
The guard held a tablet.
“I found something.””
Everyone gathered around.
The guard played the recording.
A hallway.
Six days earlier.
Ethan was being wheeled down the corridor in a hospital bed.
Meredith covered her mouth.
“That’s him.””
Beside the bed stood a nurse.
Another man walked behind them.
The guard paused the video.
“Do you know him?””
Richard stared.
“No.””
Cole looked closer.
“Zoom in.””
The guard did.
The man's face became clearer.
Evelyn gasped.
She knew him.
“He was at Daniel's funeral.””
Edward stared.
“Who?””
Evelyn pointed.
“Daniel's cousin.””
Victor.
Victor was shown walking beside Ethan's hospital bed.
Meredith shook her head.
“He wasn't supposed to be involved.””
Richard whispered, “He was.””
Everyone looked at him.
Richard's voice cracked.
“Victor worked with Daniel.””
Edward frowned.
“On what?””
Richard stared at the screen.
“On finding out who had been stealing from the company.””
Cole's eyes narrowed.
“Stealing what?””
“Money.””
Edward shook his head.
“No.””
Richard looked at him.
“Yes.””
“And Daniel's investigation?””
“Wasn't about the company.””
Edward suddenly went pale.
“What?””
Richard looked toward Evelyn.
“It was about the Harrington family.””
The security guard stared at them.
“What does that mean?””
Richard ignored him.
“Daniel discovered someone had been laundering money through accounts connected to the family.””
Edward whispered, “That can't be.””
“He found shell companies.””
“Which companies?””
Richard swallowed.
“Several.””
“Names.””
Richard hesitated.
Then said, “Vale Holdings.””
Meredith froze.
“That was mine.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked terrified.
“What did you say?””
Meredith shook her head.
“I didn't know.””
Richard continued.
“Daniel believed someone was using Meredith's name.””
Meredith stared at him.
“You told me it was clean.””
“I lied.””
“You used me.””
“I was trying to protect Ethan.””
“From whom?””
Richard didn't answer.
Suddenly the hospital lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the entire fourth floor went dark.
Someone screamed from down the corridor.
Emergency lights came on.
Red.
Dim.
Eerie.
The security guard touched his radio.
“Power outage on four.””
Cole immediately turned toward Evelyn.
“Stay with us.””
A metal door slammed somewhere nearby.
Then another.
Footsteps raced down the hallway.
Matthew moved toward the sound.
“Don't,” Cole warned.
Too late.
A man in hospital scrubs burst around the corner.
He was carrying a small black bag.
He saw them.
Stopped.
Then ran.
Matthew chased him.
Cole followed.
The corridor erupted in chaos.
A nurse shouted.
A security guard ran after them.
The man reached the stairwell.
Matthew tackled him before he could open the door.
The black bag flew across the floor.
Cole grabbed it.
Inside was a syringe.
A hospital badge.
A burner phone.
And a photograph.
Cole picked up the photograph.
His stomach dropped.
It showed Ethan sitting in a wheelchair.
But Ethan wasn't in the hospital.
He was somewhere outdoors.
Behind him stood a large old farmhouse.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
*HE'S WITH THE REAL FAMILY NOW.*
Cole turned the photograph over.
The man in scrubs was pinned beneath Matthew.
He began laughing.
Not nervously.
Not desperately.
Quietly.
Like this had all gone exactly according to plan.
Cole crouched beside him.
“Where is Ethan?””
The man smiled.
“You're too late.””
“Where?””
“He left four days ago.””
“With who?””
The man's smile widened.
Then he looked past Cole.
Straight at Evelyn.
“The same people who took Daniel.””
Evelyn froze.
“What people?””
The man laughed again.
“You really don't know, do you?””
Cole grabbed his collar.
“Tell me.””
The man leaned closer.
“They didn't kill your husband.””
Evelyn stopped breathing.
“He's alive?””
The man shook his head.
“No.””
He smiled.
“But Daniel left something behind.””
Cole released his collar.
“What?””
The man looked at Evelyn.
“His daughter.””
Evelyn's face went blank.
“My husband didn't have a daughter.””
The man's eyes hardened.
“That's what they wanted you to believe.””
He reached into his pocket.
Cole immediately restrained his wrist.
But it was too late.
The man had already pressed something.
The burner phone in Cole's hand lit up.
A new message appeared.
*YOU BROUGHT RICHARD. GOOD.*
Then another.
*NOW BRING EVELYN TO THE FARMHOUSE.*
And finally:
*COME ALONE.*
Under the message was an address.
Richard saw it.
His expression collapsed.
Evelyn looked at him.
“You know that place.””
Richard whispered,
“It's where Daniel buried his biggest secret.””
Cole stared at him.
“What secret?””
Richard looked at Evelyn.
“The woman I thought was dead.””
Evelyn's voice trembled.
“Who?””
May you like
Richard swallowed.
“Daniel's first wife.””
