Chapter 6: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Richard's last words hung in the hospital stairwell.
“Daniel's first wife.””
Evelyn stared at him.
“My husband was married before?””
Richard shook his head.
“Yes.””
“But I knew that.””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“You knew Daniel had been married before you. You didn't know what happened to her.””
Evelyn gripped the railing.
“Her name.””
Richard looked away.
“Laura.””
“Laura what?””
“Harrington.””
The name meant nothing to her.
But Meredith reacted.
Her face suddenly lost all color.
“You said she was dead.””
Richard turned toward her.
“I thought she was.””
“You told me she died in an accident.””
“She disappeared.””
“That isn't the same thing.””
The man in scrubs laughed from the floor.
“You people really believed all those stories.””
Matthew kept one knee pressed against his back.
“Shut up.””
The stranger grinned.
“You're wasting time.””
Cole crouched beside him.
“Then stop wasting ours. Who took Ethan?””
The man looked at Evelyn.
“Ask Richard.””
Every eye turned toward him.
Richard's shoulders dropped.
“I told you what I know.””
“No,” Cole said.
“You told us enough to make us more confused.””
Richard looked at the photograph of Ethan.
Then at the hospital corridor.
Finally, he said, “We need to leave.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Not until you tell me everything.””
Richard stared at her.
“If I tell you everything, you may never forgive me.””
“I already don't trust you.””
“That isn't the same thing.””
“No.””
Evelyn's voice hardened.
“It is worse.””
Richard nodded slowly.
“You're right.””
He pulled out his phone.
“I'll show you.””
He opened his photographs.
There were dozens.
Evelyn expected to see family pictures.
Instead, she saw screenshots.
Bank transfers.
Property records.
Copies of old newspaper clippings.
A photograph of a young woman standing beside Daniel.
Laura.
She was beautiful.
Dark hair.
Bright eyes.
And standing beside her was a teenage Richard.
Evelyn stared.
“This was before I met Daniel?””
“Yes.””
Richard swiped again.
A picture of Laura holding a baby.
Evelyn stopped.
“Who is that?””
Richard’s thumb froze.
“I don't know.””
“Richard.””
He looked at her.
“That was taken nineteen years ago.””
Evelyn's breath caught.
“Nineteen?””
“Yes.””
“How old was Daniel?””
“Thirty-five.””
“And Laura?””
“Thirty-two.””
Evelyn looked again.
The baby was wrapped in a yellow blanket.
A tiny hospital bracelet hung from one wrist.
She could almost see the shape of the child's face.
“Was that Daniel's child?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
“Then whose?””
“I don't know.””
Cole looked at him.
“That's a convenient answer.””
Richard ignored him.
“Daniel and Laura separated shortly after that.””
“Why?””
“Because Laura accused Daniel of hiding money.””
Evelyn frowned.
“My husband?””
Richard nodded.
“She believed he was involved in something illegal.””
“Was he?””
“No.””
“Then what happened?””
“He told her she was mistaken.””
Richard swiped to another picture.
A newspaper article.
*LOCAL WOMAN VANISHES AFTER FINANCIAL DISPUTE.*
Evelyn read the article.
Laura Harrington had disappeared without explanation eighteen years ago.
No body.
No confirmed sighting.
No arrest.
Just gone.
Evelyn looked at Richard.
“You told everyone she was dead.””
“That's what my mother said.””
“Your mother?””
“She told us Laura died after leaving town.””
“Did Daniel believe that?””
“I don't know.””
Evelyn suddenly remembered something.
A conversation from years ago.
Daniel had once mentioned that he hated hospitals because they reminded him of “the worst year of his life.””
She had never asked why.
Now she wondered if that year was connected to Laura.
Cole took the phone from Richard and studied the bank records.
“What's this?””
Richard swallowed.
“Transfers.””
“To where?””
“A private account.””
“Whose?””
“I don't know.””
“You've got screenshots of it.””
“Because Daniel gave them to me.””
Cole frowned.
“When?””
“Six months before he died.””
“Why?””
Richard looked at Evelyn.
“He wanted me to investigate Laura.””
Evelyn's heart pounded.
“Why would he investigate his own first wife?””
“Because someone had started using her identity.””
Meredith stepped forward.
“What do you mean?””
Richard showed them another document.
A company registration.
*LAURA HARRINGTON CONSULTING LLC.*
The company had been established fourteen years after Laura disappeared.
Evelyn's eyes widened.
“Someone used her name.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“That's what Daniel was trying to find out.””
Edward had been silent until now.
He took the phone.
“This registration isn't from fourteen years ago.””
“What?””
“It was created seven years ago.””
Richard nodded.
“Exactly.””
Edward looked up sharply.
“That's when Daniel met Ethan.””
Richard said nothing.
Cole suddenly understood.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Ethan is seventeen.””
“Right.””
“Laura disappeared eighteen years ago.””
“Right.””
“Then the company was created seven years ago.””
“Yes.””
Cole looked at Richard.
“And Meredith knew Daniel seven years ago.””
Meredith's expression tightened.
“That's not a coincidence.””
“No,” Richard said.
“It isn't.””
Evelyn looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Richard exhaled.
“Daniel thought someone was building a false identity around Ethan.””
“Why?””
“Because Ethan wasn't supposed to exist.””
Evelyn stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Richard looked at Meredith.
“Tell her.””
Meredith's jaw tightened.
“No.””
“Tell her.””
“I won't.””
“You brought us this far.””
“You're the one who lied.””
“Because I was trying to protect him.””
“From whom?””
Richard whispered,
“Laura.””
Evelyn froze.
“Laura is alive?””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Daniel believed she was.””
Meredith shook her head.
“He was wrong.””
The man in scrubs started laughing again.
Everyone turned.
“You're all so close,” he said.
Cole grabbed him by the shoulders.
“Where is Ethan?””
The man's smile vanished.
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
“He wasn't taken from the hospital.””
Meredith stepped forward.
“What?””
“He left.””
“With who?””
The man looked at Richard.
“His mother.””
Meredith's face went white.
“I'm Ethan's mother.””
The stranger laughed.
“Are you?””
Meredith stopped.
The hospital hallway suddenly felt colder.
Evelyn whispered,
“What is he saying?””
Meredith couldn't answer.
Richard looked at her.
“Meredith…”
“No.””
She backed away.
“No.””
The man in scrubs continued.
“Ethan's biological mother isn't Meredith Vale.””
Evelyn looked at Meredith.
“Then who?””
The man stared straight at her.
“Laura Harrington.””
Nobody moved.
Richard looked like he had been punched.
“No.””
The man nodded.
“Yes.””
Cole stood slowly.
“That would make Ethan…”
“Daniel's stepson.””
The man smiled.
“Unless Daniel was lying about that too.””
Evelyn felt dizzy.
“Then why did Meredith raise him?””
The man shrugged.
“Because Laura gave him to her.””
Meredith shook her head.
“That's not true.””
“You know it is.””
“Shut up.””
“You promised to keep the boy safe.””
Meredith's eyes filled with tears.
“And you failed.””
Cole looked at her.
“Start talking.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“I didn't know.””
“Didn't know what?””
“That Laura was alive.””
“Then who did you think took Ethan?””
“I thought he was kidnapped.””
“By whom?””
Meredith looked at Richard.
“Daniel.””
Evelyn's face twisted.
“My husband kidnapped a child?””
“No.””
Meredith shook her head desperately.
“Daniel found him.””
“Where?””
“In a motel.””
“Seven years ago?””
“Yes.””
Meredith continued.
“Ethan was ten years old. He had been abandoned.””
“By Laura?””
“I thought so.””
“What did Daniel do?””
“He took him to a hospital.””
“And then?””
“He asked me to become his guardian.””
Evelyn stared.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“Why you?””
“Because I was Ethan's mother.””
The sentence was strange.
Not because it sounded false.
Because it sounded incomplete.
Meredith looked at Evelyn.
“I carried him for nine months.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You're lying.””
She turned on him.
“You knew.””
“I knew there was another woman.””
“You knew enough.””
“But Daniel never told me who.””
Meredith shook her head.
“Because he wanted to protect you.””
Evelyn whispered,
“Why me?””
Meredith stared at her.
“Because Laura hated you.””
“Why?””
“Because she believed Daniel chose you over her.””
Evelyn's chest tightened.
“I didn't know about her.””
“I know.””
“Then why blame me?””
“Because grief doesn't need facts.””
The man in scrubs suddenly moved.
Matthew tightened his grip.
But the stranger wasn't trying to escape.
He was reaching toward his pocket.
Cole grabbed his wrist.
A small key fell to the floor.
The silver key.
Evelyn stared at it.
The same shape.
The same tiny scratch across the edge.
Cole picked it up.
“Where did you get this?””
The man smiled.
“From Daniel.””
Evelyn's breath caught.
“That's impossible.””
“He gave it to me.””
“When?””
“Three days before he died.””
Cole stared.
“What did he tell you?””
The man looked at Evelyn.
“He told me to watch you.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew someone would come for you.””
“Who?””
The man smiled.
“Laura.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Oh God.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You knew she was alive.””
“I suspected.””
“You never told me.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of her?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because she killed a man.””
Silence.
The man in scrubs started laughing.
“That's only part of it.””
Cole looked at him.
“Who did she kill?””
The stranger stared into the distance.
“Her husband.””
Evelyn's blood ran cold.
“Daniel?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
The man looked at Richard.
Richard whispered,
“Her second husband.””
Evelyn frowned.
“Laura remarried?””
“Yes.””
“And he died?””
“Officially, it was an accident.””
“Officially?””
Richard nodded.
“His car went off a cliff.””
“Was she blamed?””
“No.””
“Then why are you afraid of her?””
“Because three witnesses disappeared afterward.””
Cole's expression hardened.
“What witnesses?””
“People who knew where Ethan came from.””
Evelyn looked at Meredith.
“And you survived.””
Meredith nodded slowly.
“I was afraid every day.””
“Why didn't you leave?””
“Because Ethan needed me.””
The man in scrubs snorted.
“You stayed because Daniel paid you.””
Meredith spun toward him.
“That isn't why.””
“How much?””
She said nothing.
“How much did Daniel pay you?””
“Enough to keep Ethan alive.””
“And what did you promise?””
Meredith's eyes hardened.
“I promised never to tell him who his real father was.””
Richard's face twisted.
“Meredith.””
She turned toward him.
“I kept my promise.””
Evelyn looked at Richard.
“His real father.””
Richard didn't answer.
Meredith did.
“Richard.””
Evelyn stared.
So many pieces slammed together.
Ethan was Richard's son.
Meredith had raised him.
Daniel had protected him.
Laura may have been his biological mother.
And nobody could agree on which version of his life was true.
Evelyn's phone vibrated.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
One picture.
This time it wasn't Ethan.
It was Daniel.
Alive.
Sitting in a chair.
His face thinner than Evelyn remembered.
A white bandage around his left wrist.
And behind him stood a woman.
Dark hair.
Older.
But unmistakable.
Laura.
Evelyn's hand flew to her mouth.
A message appeared beneath the photograph.
*HE TRIED TO TELL YOU.*
Then another.
*YOU NEVER LISTENED.*
And finally:
*COME TO THE FARMHOUSE BEFORE MIDNIGHT.*
Evelyn stared at the photograph.
Her husband's eyes seemed to look directly into hers.
For one impossible second, she couldn't breathe.
Then she heard a sound behind her.
A hospital alarm.
People began shouting.
The man in scrubs suddenly went limp.
Matthew checked his pulse.
“He's unconscious.””
A nurse ran toward them.
“What happened?””
“Call a doctor!””
The corridor erupted.
Cole grabbed Evelyn's arm.
“We're leaving.””
She didn't move.
“That's my husband.””
“He may be alive.””
“Then I have to go.””
“You don't know what's waiting at that farmhouse.””
“I don't care.””
Cole looked at her.
For the first time since meeting her, he saw something stronger than fear.
A wife who had spent three months grieving.
A woman who had just been shown proof that the truth about her husband was far darker than she imagined.
Evelyn picked up the silver key.
“We go together.””
Cole nodded.
“We go together.””
Richard stepped forward.
“I know a shortcut.””
Cole looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because the farmhouse isn't where you think it is.””
Evelyn turned.
“Where is it?””
Richard pointed toward the photograph.
“That building behind Laura?””
“Yes.””
“That isn't the farmhouse.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“It's the old Harrington estate.””
Her face changed.
“The house Daniel told me burned down?””
Richard nodded.
“It didn't burn.””
“What happened to it?””
Richard lowered his voice.
“It was abandoned.””
“Why?””
“Because that's where Laura disappeared.””
Meredith whispered,
“And where Ethan was born.””
Evelyn looked at the photograph again.
The old house stood behind Laura.
One upstairs window glowed faintly.
Someone was standing inside.
A tall figure.
Watching.
Cole leaned closer to the screen.
“Who's that?””
Richard stared at the photograph.
His lips parted.
“I know him.””
“Who?””
Richard took a step backward.
“That can't be possible.””
“Richard.””
He looked at Evelyn.
The color drained from his face.
“That's Nathan Cole.””
Evelyn's eyes widened.
“Nathan is dead?””
“No.””
Richard shook his head.
“Nathan isn't dead.””
“Then where has he been?””
Richard stared at the photograph.
“With Laura.””
Evelyn looked at the clock.
11:07 p.m.
They had less than an hour.
Richard picked up his jacket.
“We need to go.””
Cole nodded.
But before they could move, the unconscious man on the floor suddenly opened his eyes.
He grabbed Cole's sleeve.
His voice was barely audible.
“Don't trust Richard.””
Cole froze.
The stranger coughed.
“He's the one who gave Laura your names.””
Richard went white.
May you like
And then the lights went out again.
This time, someone locked the hospital doors from the outside.
