Chapter 8: The Lawyer Behind the Plan

Daniel stared at Chloe.

"Melissa has a lawyer?""

Chloe nodded.

"I thought he was just helping with the boutique.""

"Name.""

"Stephen Cole.""

Daniel immediately looked at Richard's call.

"Do you know him?""

There was a pause.

"Stephen Cole?""

"Yes.""

Richard's voice changed.

"I know of him.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"What does that mean?""

"He's a private attorney. Estate planning, asset protection, business restructuring.""

"Trusts?""

"Yes.""

Naomi felt cold.

Daniel asked the obvious question.

"Could he have prepared these documents?""

"Possibly.""

"Could he have known the signatures were forged?""

"That's a much bigger allegation.""

Daniel looked at the audio file.

"He talks about needing my signature one more time and having samples of Naomi's.""

Richard went silent.

"Send me the recording.""

Daniel forwarded it.

A minute passed.

Then Richard said, "Do not contact Cole.""

Daniel frowned.

"Why?""

"Because if he's involved, you don't want to warn him about what you have.""

Chloe wrapped her arms around herself.

Naomi looked at her.

"When did you meet him?""

"Twice.""

"Where?""

"At the apartment.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"What happened?""

"Mom introduced him as a business attorney. They talked while I packed orders.""

"About what?""

"I wasn't listening.""

"Try to remember.""

Chloe closed her eyes.

"Money. Deadlines. Something about turning eighteen.""

Naomi's stomach tightened.

"My birthday?""

Chloe looked at her.

"Probably.""

Naomi would turn seventeen in four months.

Still more than a year from gaining control of the trust.

Why would they discuss eighteen now?

Richard answered.

"Because once Naomi turns eighteen, manipulating control becomes much harder.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"So they needed everything completed before then.""

"Likely.""

Naomi stared at the broken little trophy still lying on the coffee table.

Her childhood had become a deadline.

Melissa had looked at her growing older and seen a closing window.

Daniel told Richard about the apartment lease and forged guarantee.

Richard asked him to forward that too.

Then Daniel asked, "What happens now?""

"Tomorrow morning, we seek emergency protections around every account connected to Naomi.""

"And Melissa?""

"That's for law enforcement to investigate.""

"What about Cole?""

"I'll contact the appropriate people.""

Daniel exhaled.

"I should have seen this.""

Naomi looked at him.

Richard's voice softened.

"Daniel, sophisticated financial manipulation often works because it resembles ordinary family activity until you see the whole pattern.""

Daniel stared at the files.

"I gave her the safe combination.""

"That doesn't make you responsible for what she did with it.""

Daniel didn't answer.

After the call ended, Chloe went upstairs.

Naomi remained beside her father.

It was nearly midnight.

Neither had eaten dinner.

Neither seemed hungry.

Daniel began photographing every document in the gray box.

Naomi helped organize them.

Rachel trust.

Naomi education.

Chloe education.

Business.

Loans.

Daniel.

They created separate piles.

Then Naomi found something strange.

A sealed envelope.

Her name was written across the front.

NAOMI — PERSONAL.

The handwriting wasn't Melissa's.

Naomi froze.

She recognized it.

"Dad.""

Daniel looked up.

Naomi held the envelope with both hands.

"That's Mom's handwriting.""

Daniel stopped breathing.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Naomi had almost forgotten exactly what Rachel's handwriting looked like.

Rounded letters.

A slightly crooked capital N.

Daniel touched the corner of the envelope.

"I've never seen this.""

"Why would Melissa have it?""

"I don't know.""

Naomi carefully opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The paper was old.

Her hands shook as she unfolded it.

My Naomi,

If you're reading this, you're probably old enough to understand why I worried so much about leaving you.

Naomi's vision blurred instantly.

Daniel turned away.

She kept reading.

Rachel had written the letter shortly before her death.

Not about money.

Not at first.

She wrote about Naomi's curiosity.

How she dismantled toys to see how they worked.

How she asked impossible questions at breakfast.

How Rachel hoped she'd never make herself smaller to make other people comfortable.

Naomi stopped.

That sentence hurt.

Daniel whispered, "Keep going.""

Rachel eventually mentioned the trust.

She explained that the money wasn't meant to make Naomi rich.

It was meant to give her choices.

College.

Graduate school.

A first home.

A business.

A life she chose for herself.

Then came a paragraph that made Daniel sit straighter.

I have asked Daniel to protect this until you are old enough to protect it yourself. I trust your father completely. If anyone ever tells you that I wanted somebody else controlling what I left you, please know that isn't true unless your father personally chose that person with you.

Naomi looked at Daniel.

He covered his mouth.

Rachel had anticipated remarriage.

Not Melissa specifically.

Just life.

People.

Complexity.

Then Naomi reached the final paragraph.

There is one thing more valuable than the account.

Your work.

Nobody can inherit your discipline for you. Nobody can steal the hours you spent learning. Money can disappear.

Trophies can break. But what you become belongs to you.

Naomi stopped reading.

Her eyes fell toward the broken trophy.

For the first time since coming home, she smiled through tears.

"Trophies can break.""

Daniel looked at it too.

A broken fifteen-dollar trophy had exposed a three-hundred-thousand-dollar scheme.

He reached for Naomi.

She leaned into him and cried.

Not the angry tears from earlier.

These were different.

Grief.

Relief.

Sixteen years old, sitting in the living room with her mother's words in her hands.

After several minutes, Daniel asked, "Can I make a copy?""

Naomi nodded.

"The original stays with me.""

"Absolutely.""

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

Chloe appeared.

Her eyes were swollen.

"Sorry.""

Naomi folded the letter carefully.

"What?""

"I heard you crying.""

"I'm okay.""

Chloe noticed the envelope.

"What's that?""

"A letter from my mom.""

Chloe's expression collapsed.

"That was in Mom's box?""

Naomi nodded.

"I'm sorry.""

Naomi studied her.

"Did you know?""

"No.""

"I believe you.""

Chloe looked surprised.

It was the first time Naomi had said those words to her all night.

Chloe sat across from her.

"Why would Mom keep it?""

Daniel answered.

"Maybe it was stored with the original trust documents.""

Naomi frowned.

"Then why didn't you have it?""

Daniel thought.

"Rachel's attorney sent several sealed materials after she died. I put everything into the original trust file.""

Naomi's eyes narrowed.

"So Melissa took the entire file.""

"Probably.""

"And found this.""

"Yes.""

Chloe looked sick.

"She read it?""

"We don't know.""

Naomi examined the envelope.

It had already been opened before tonight.

The original seal had been sliced.

"She did.""

Silence.

Melissa had read Rachel's words.

She knew exactly what Rachel wanted.

And proceeded anyway.

Chloe's phone buzzed.

Everyone tensed.

But it wasn't Melissa.

It was an email.

Chloe stared at it.

"That's weird.""

"What?"" Daniel asked.

"Stephen Cole emailed me.""

Daniel immediately stood.

"What does it say?""

Chloe opened it.

Her face tightened.

"It's a document.""

"Don't sign anything.""

"I'm not.""

She read the message aloud.

Chloe, your mother indicated that certain family documents may require correction following a misunderstanding this evening. Please review the attached statement confirming that any signatures you provided were voluntary and completed with Daniel Parker's knowledge.

Daniel laughed in disbelief.

"He's trying to create cover.""

Naomi looked at the timestamp.

12:14 a.m.

Cole knew.

Somebody had told him everything had fallen apart.

Daniel said, "Forward it to Richard.""

Chloe did.

Then another email arrived.

This time to Naomi.

She stared at her phone.

"How does he have my email?""

Daniel looked over her shoulder.

Stephen Cole.

Naomi opened it.

Dear Naomi,

I understand there may be confusion regarding financial planning undertaken for your benefit. I would strongly caution against making statements to third parties until all documents can be properly explained.

Naomi looked at her father.

"Is he threatening me?""

"He's trying to scare you.""

Another sentence followed.

Certain actions taken by family members were intended solely to protect your future and should not be mischaracterized.

Naomi's anger returned.

Protect your future.

Everyone who wanted her money claimed they were protecting her.

She forwarded the email to Richard.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

Richard again.

"Don't reply to Cole.""

"We haven't.""

"Good.""

"Why is he emailing the girls?""

"Because he's scared.""

Naomi looked at Daniel.

Richard continued.

"I checked something while reviewing the trust history.""

"What?""

"Stephen Cole's name appears once before.""

Daniel frowned.

"Where?""

"An amendment consultation from seven years ago.""

Daniel looked confused.

"I never hired him.""

"You didn't.""

"Then who did?""

Richard hesitated.

"Rachel.""

Naomi sat upright.

"My mom knew him?""

"Apparently.""

Daniel looked shocked.

"Why?""

"I don't know yet.""

Naomi stared at Rachel's letter.

Suddenly Stephen Cole wasn't just Melissa's lawyer.

He had known Rachel.

That changed everything.

Daniel asked, "Was he her attorney?""

"Not according to the file. It appears Rachel consulted him once.""

"About what?""

"The record doesn't say.""

Naomi felt an uneasy chill.

"What if Mom didn't trust him?""

Richard paused.

"That's possible.""

Daniel looked at the letter.

Rachel had written a strangely specific warning:

If anyone ever tells you that I wanted somebody else controlling what I left you, please know that isn't true.

Had that been general caution?

Or had Rachel already been worried about someone?

Richard said, "I'm going to contact Rachel's original estate attorney first thing in the morning.""

Daniel frowned.

"I thought he retired.""

"He did.""

"Can you reach him?""

"I'll try.""

Naomi looked at the clock.

12:31 a.m.

This afternoon she had been standing on a school stage holding a trophy.

Now an attorney her dead mother once consulted was emailing her after midnight asking her to stay quiet.

Daniel told both girls to sleep.

Naomi tried.

She couldn't.

At 2:17 a.m., she heard voices downstairs.

She walked quietly into the hallway.

Daniel was on the phone.

"You're sure?""

Pause.

"When?""

Another pause.

Naomi descended.

Daniel saw her.

His face told her everything.

Something else had happened.

"What?""

Daniel lowered the phone.

"Richard reached Rachel's former attorney.""

Naomi's pulse quickened.

"And?""

"Rachel did consult Stephen Cole.""

"Why?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Because Cole approached her about restructuring the trust.""

Naomi frowned.

"When?""

"Three months before she died.""

"Why would he approach her?""

"He claimed he could help reduce taxes.""

"And Mom said no?""

Daniel nodded.

"Immediately.""

Naomi looked toward Rachel's letter.

"Then why is he helping Melissa now?""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"That's not the part that worries me.""

"What is?""

"Rachel's attorney kept notes from their conversation.""

Naomi waited.

Daniel's next words made her blood run cold.

"Your mother told him she believed Cole already knew too much about her finances.""

Naomi stared.

"How?""

Daniel shook his head.

"She didn't know.""

His phone was still connected.

Richard spoke through the speaker.

"Naomi, there's one more detail.""

She stepped closer.

"What?""

"Rachel asked her attorney to document something in case anyone ever tried to alter the trust after her death.""

Naomi's heart pounded.

"What did she document?""

Richard paused.

"She named the person she believed had been giving Stephen Cole information about your family's finances.""

Daniel looked sick.

Naomi whispered, "Who?""

May you like

Richard answered.

"Eric Parker.""
