Chapter 4: The Name on the Paper
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Daniel kept the phone pressed to his ear, but his eyes were locked on Melissa.
"My brother?""
Melissa's face had gone pale.
Naomi looked between them.
"Dad, what does Uncle Eric have to do with this?""
Daniel didn't answer her immediately.
He seemed unable to.
Eric Parker was Daniel's younger brother.
Naomi didn't see him often anymore, but when she was younger, he had been around constantly. Birthday parties. Christmas dinners. Backyard cookouts.
After Rachel died, Eric had even stayed with Daniel and Naomi for several weeks.
Naomi remembered him making pancakes in ridiculous shapes because she refused to eat breakfast.
She remembered him sitting beside her at Rachel's funeral.
She remembered him saying, "Your mom loved you more than anything in this world.""
And now his name was attached to paperwork involving Rachel's money.
Daniel finally spoke into the phone.
"Richard, read me exactly what it says.""
His attorney's voice came through the speaker.
"The request identifies Melissa Parker as proposed successor trustee. Eric Parker is listed as financial consultant and authorized transaction representative.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Authorized to do what?""
"Communicate with the institution, submit supporting documentation, and facilitate approved distributions.""
"Could he withdraw money himself?""
"Not under the current trust terms.""
Daniel exhaled slightly.
"But," Richard continued, "if the trustee modification had been accepted, his role could have given him substantial access to the process.""
The relief disappeared.
"When did you receive this?""
"Twelve days ago.""
"Who sent it?""
"Electronically.""
"From whose email?""
There was a pause.
"Melissa Parker's.""
Daniel stared at his wife.
Melissa shook her head.
"Someone could have used my email.""
Daniel almost laughed.
"Your email. My forged signature. Your name as trustee. My brother as financial representative.""
"You don't know what happened.""
"Then explain it.""
Melissa folded her arms tightly.
"I talked to Eric about finances.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"When?""
"A few times.""
"How many times?""
"I don't remember.""
"Try.""
"Daniel—"
"Try.""
Melissa looked toward Chloe as though searching for help.
Chloe stared at the floor.
Naomi stood beside her father, still clutching the envelope from the science competition.
It seemed absurd now.
An hour earlier, ten thousand dollars had felt like the center of the conflict.
Now it felt like a breadcrumb leading toward something much larger.
Daniel turned back to the phone.
"Richard, freeze everything you can.""
"I've already contacted the institution. Nothing will move until we sort this out.""
"Send me every document connected to that request.""
"I will.""
"And don't communicate with Melissa or Eric without copying me.""
Melissa's head snapped up.
"You can't just cut me out.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Watch me.""
He ended the call.
Melissa grabbed her purse.
"I'm not staying here for this.""
Daniel didn't stop her.
But Naomi did.
"Did Uncle Eric know?""
Melissa stared at her.
"Know what?""
"That the money belonged to me.""
"Of course he knew.""
Naomi swallowed.
"And he was helping you transfer it?""
"I didn't say that.""
"You said you talked to him about finances.""
"Adults talk about money.""
"Then what was the condo?""
Melissa looked away.
Naomi stepped closer.
"What condo?""
"It wasn't finalized.""
"That isn't what I asked.""
Melissa's patience snapped.
"It was an investment property!""
Naomi flinched.
Daniel's face hardened.
"An investment property in whose name?""
Melissa hesitated.
Daniel repeated the question.
"Whose name?""
"Mine.""
Chloe looked up.
"What?""
Melissa closed her eyes.
Chloe stared at her mother.
"You said it was going to be ours.""
"It was.""
"You said my name would be on it.""
"Eventually.""
Chloe's expression changed.
For the first time, she seemed to understand that she hadn't simply been Melissa's favorite.
She had also been useful.
"You lied to me.""
"Chloe, not now.""
"You said it was for my future.""
"It was.""
"Then why was only your name on it?""
Melissa didn't answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
"How much was the condo?""
Melissa's silence answered before she did.
"How much?""
"Two hundred and eighty thousand.""
Naomi's breath caught.
Daniel stared at her.
"And where exactly were you getting that money?""
"I wasn't buying it outright.""
"Then how?""
"A down payment.""
"With forty-eight thousand dollars from Naomi's trust?""
Melissa's eyes flashed.
"It was going to be paid back.""
Naomi felt as though someone had punched her.
There it was.
Not a misunderstanding.
Not confusion.
Not a hypothetical discussion.
Melissa had intended to use her money.
"My mother's money," Naomi whispered.
Melissa looked at her.
"You would still have more than enough for college.""
Naomi couldn't believe the words.
"That's your excuse?""
"It wasn't going to hurt you.""
"You don't get to decide what hurts me.""
"I was trying to build something for this family.""
"No," Daniel said.
"You were trying to build something for yourself.""
Melissa turned on him.
"You think I haven't built anything here?""
"Not with Rachel's money.""
"I raised Naomi too!""
Naomi's stomach turned.
"You raised me?""
Melissa looked at her.
"I've been in this house since you were eight.""
"And you've spent half that time making sure I knew Chloe came first.""
"That's not true.""
"Today you threw everything I earned into a garage.""
"I moved trophies!""
"You broke the last gift my mother ever gave me.""
Melissa's expression flickered.
Naomi continued.
"And while you were doing that, you were trying to put yourself in charge of the money she left me.""
Melissa's lips tightened.
"You're sixteen. You don't understand financial planning.""
"I understand stealing.""
Melissa stepped forward.
Daniel immediately moved between them.
"Don't.""
She stared at him.
"I'm not going to hurt her.""
"Then stop acting like she's the problem.""
A car door slammed outside.
Everyone turned.
Naomi's heart began pounding.
Daniel walked toward the window.
A black sedan had pulled into the driveway.
The driver's door opened.
Eric Parker stepped out.
Daniel became completely still.
Melissa whispered something under her breath.
Naomi caught it.
"Oh God.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"You knew he was coming?""
"No.""
Eric walked toward the front door.
He was forty-four, broad-shouldered, neatly dressed, with the same dark eyes as Daniel.
The doorbell rang.
Nobody moved.
It rang again.
Daniel opened the door.
Eric smiled automatically.
"Hey.""
The smile vanished when he saw Daniel's face.
"What's wrong?""
Daniel said nothing.
Eric looked past him.
Melissa.
Chloe.
Naomi.
The broken trophies.
The papers on the coffee table.
His expression changed.
Daniel noticed.
"So you know.""
Eric stepped inside.
"Know what?""
"Don't insult me.""
"Daniel, I don't know what you're talking about.""
Daniel held up the torn trust document.
Eric stared at it.
Only for a second.
But Naomi saw recognition.
Daniel did too.
"Your name is on the transfer paperwork.""
Eric slowly looked toward Melissa.
Daniel laughed without humor.
"Interesting.""
"Daniel—"
"You looked at her.""
"I looked at everybody.""
"No. You looked at Melissa.""
Eric exhaled.
"Can we talk privately?""
"No.""
"This isn't something Naomi needs to hear.""
Naomi almost couldn't believe it.
"Why does everyone keep saying that about my own money?""
Eric's eyes moved toward her.
"Naomi, that's not what I meant.""
"Then say it in front of me.""
Eric looked uncomfortable.
Daniel pointed toward the sofa.
"Sit down.""
"I'm not one of your employees.""
"Then stand. I don't care.""
Eric rubbed the back of his neck.
"This got out of hand.""
Naomi felt her skin go cold.
Daniel stared at him.
"That sounds like something a person says when they're involved.""
Eric shook his head.
"I didn't forge anything.""
"Did you know Melissa wanted to become trustee?""
"Yes.""
Melissa interrupted.
"Eric.""
He ignored her.
Daniel's face tightened.
"How long?""
"A couple months.""
Naomi looked at Melissa.
Months.
This hadn't started today.
The broken shelf hadn't caused anything.
It had exposed something already happening.
Daniel asked, "Why didn't you tell me?""
Eric looked genuinely ashamed.
"Because Melissa told me you'd agreed in principle.""
Daniel laughed once.
"Apparently everybody thinks I agreed to things I never heard about.""
"She said you were overwhelmed with work and wanted her handling more financial matters.""
"And you believed her?""
"At first.""
Daniel caught those last two words.
"At first?""
Eric looked at Melissa.
She stared back at him.
"Don't," she said quietly.
Daniel stepped closer.
"What happened after 'at first'?""
Eric's shoulders dropped.
"She asked me to help structure an investment.""
"The condo.""
"Yes.""
"You knew the down payment was coming from Naomi's trust?""
"No.""
Melissa scoffed.
"Liar.""
Eric's head snapped toward her.
"Don't do that.""
"You're going to stand there and pretend you didn't know?""
"I knew you were trying to access money. You told me it was family investment capital.""
"From where did you think it came?""
Eric didn't answer.
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Exactly.""
Eric looked at his brother.
"I suspected later.""
"And still didn't call me.""
"No.""
"Why?""
Eric looked toward the floor.
Naomi knew before he answered.
Money.
It was always money.
"What were you getting?"" Daniel asked.
Eric remained silent.
"Eric.""
"Five percent.""
Daniel stared at him.
"Of the condo?""
"Of the investment structure.""
"Say it like a normal person.""
Eric's jaw tightened.
"Fourteen thousand dollars.""
Chloe gasped.
Naomi looked at her uncle.
"You were getting fourteen thousand dollars for helping her use my money?""
"It wasn't supposed to be like that.""
Naomi laughed bitterly.
"Everybody keeps saying that.""
Eric looked at her.
"I'm sorry.""
"Don't.""
Her voice cracked.
"You sat next to me at Mom's funeral.""
Eric's face collapsed.
Naomi continued.
"You told me you'd always protect me.""
"I meant it.""
"Then why didn't you?""
He couldn't answer.
Daniel walked toward the window.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he turned.
"How far did this go?""
Eric looked at Melissa.
Daniel saw it.
"Stop looking at her.""
Eric swallowed.
"The condo wasn't the only plan.""
Naomi felt her stomach drop.
Melissa's voice became sharp.
"Eric.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"What else?""
Eric hesitated.
"There was another proposed distribution.""
Daniel's face drained.
"How much?""
"Eric, don't.""
Daniel slammed his palm against the dining table.
"HOW MUCH?""
Chloe jumped.
Naomi's heart hammered.
Eric finally answered.
"One hundred and twenty thousand.""
Nobody spoke.
Naomi couldn't process the number.
Daniel stared at his brother.
"For what?""
Eric rubbed both hands over his face.
"Melissa said she wanted to consolidate debt.""
"What debt?""
"Credit cards. Personal loans. Something involving a business.""
Daniel turned slowly toward his wife.
"What business?""
Melissa grabbed her purse.
"I'm leaving.""
Daniel didn't move to stop her.
But Eric spoke.
"The boutique.""
Melissa froze.
Naomi frowned.
"What boutique?""
Chloe looked confused too.
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"You don't own a boutique.""
Eric gave a humorless laugh.
"Apparently she does.""
Melissa turned on him.
"You promised me you wouldn't say anything.""
Eric stared back.
"You dragged me into a forged trust transfer.""
"I didn't drag you anywhere. You wanted your percentage.""
Daniel looked between them.
"Where is this business?""
Eric answered.
"Online mostly. Luxury clothing resale.""
Daniel frowned.
"How long?""
"Almost a year.""
Daniel stared at Melissa.
"You started a business without telling me?""
"It was mine.""
"Using what money?""
Melissa said nothing.
Daniel's face changed.
He walked quickly back toward his office.
Naomi followed.
He opened a filing drawer and pulled out several bank statements.
"What are you doing?"" Melissa asked.
Daniel ignored her.
He scanned the statements.
Then another.
Then another.
His breathing changed.
Naomi stepped closer.
"What?""
Daniel pointed at several transfers.
Five thousand.
Eight thousand.
Twelve thousand.
All sent over the past year to a company Naomi had never heard of.
MP Premier Holdings.
The same company listed on the condo paperwork.
Daniel looked at Melissa.
"This account has already received money from our joint savings.""
Melissa didn't answer.
"Thirty-seven thousand dollars.""
Chloe whispered, "Mom?""
Daniel flipped another page.
Then he stopped.
A transfer for twenty-five thousand dollars.
Not from the joint savings account.
From an account identified only by four digits.
Daniel knew those digits.
Naomi could see it on his face.
"What is it?""
He looked at her.
"Your custodial education account.""
Naomi's mouth went dry.
"But I thought the trust couldn't be touched.""
"The trust can't.""
Daniel stared at Melissa.
"But this wasn't the trust.""
Naomi remembered something.
Money from birthdays.
Savings Rachel had started before she died.
Small scholarship checks.
Daniel had occasionally mentioned an education account he contributed to separately.
"How much was in it?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
"Dad.""
"About forty thousand.""
Naomi stared at the transfer.
Twenty-five thousand.
Already gone.
This wasn't an attempted theft anymore.
Some of her money had already disappeared.
Daniel looked at Melissa.
"Where is my daughter's twenty-five thousand dollars?""
Melissa backed toward the door.
"I can explain.""
Daniel's voice was frighteningly quiet.
"Then start explaining.""
But Naomi was looking at the date.
The transfer had happened six months earlier.
She remembered that month.
Melissa had taken Chloe to New York for her seventeenth birthday.
Designer shopping.
A luxury hotel.
Concert tickets.
Naomi looked at Chloe.
Chloe seemed to realize it at the same moment.
Her face went white.
"No.""
Naomi pointed at the statement.
"Was that my money?""
Chloe shook her head.
"No. Mom said Dad paid for the trip.""
Daniel's eyes moved toward Melissa.
"I didn't.""
Chloe's breathing quickened.
"The hotel?""
Daniel shook his head.
"The clothes?""
"No.""
"The concert?""
"No.""
Chloe stared at her mother.
"Mom?""
Melissa said nothing.
Chloe looked sick.
"You spent Naomi's college money on my birthday?""
"It wasn't like that.""
"Then what was it like?""
"I was going to replace it.""
"When?""
Melissa's voice rose.
"When the investment paid off!""
Naomi stared at her.
There was the truth again.
Her money had been treated like a temporary loan nobody had bothered to ask her about.
Daniel picked up his phone.
"Richard isn't enough.""
Melissa looked at him.
"What are you doing?""
"I'm calling the bank.""
Her expression changed.
Daniel noticed.
"What?""
"Nothing.""
"What else did you do?""
"Nothing.""
He studied her.
Then his phone rang before he could dial.
Richard.
Daniel answered immediately.
"Tell me.""
His attorney sounded different this time.
Urgent.
"I spoke with the trust institution.""
Daniel put the call on speaker.
"They found something.""
Naomi's heart began pounding again.
"What?"" Daniel asked.
"A second signature page was uploaded yesterday.""
Daniel looked at Melissa.
"What signature page?""
"An authorization supposedly signed by Naomi.""
Naomi felt the room tilt.
"Me?""
Richard continued.
"It claims Naomi consents to Melissa's appointment as trustee.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"Naomi is sixteen.""
"I know.""
"I never signed anything," Naomi said.
Richard heard her.
"Naomi, I need you to be very clear. Have you signed any financial documents recently?""
"No.""
"Anything Melissa gave you?""
"No.""
"Anything Chloe gave you?""
"No.""
Naomi stopped.
Something came back to her.
Three weeks earlier.
A school form.
Melissa had left it on the kitchen counter.
Naomi had been rushing to catch the bus.
Melissa said it was permission for a college-preparation program.
There had been several signature tabs.
Naomi had signed them without reading every page.
Her stomach dropped.
"Wait.""
Daniel looked at her.
"What?""
Naomi's voice shook.
"Melissa gave me papers three weeks ago.""
Melissa immediately spoke.
"They were school forms.""
Naomi turned toward her.
"Were they?""
"Yes.""
Daniel stared at Melissa.
"Where are those forms?""
"I don't know.""
Naomi suddenly remembered something else.
"The pages were clipped together.""
Daniel waited.
"But when I signed them, some pages were folded.""
Melissa's face changed.
Naomi saw it.
So did everyone else.
Daniel stepped toward his wife.
"What did she sign?""
Melissa backed away.
"Nothing.""
"What did my daughter sign?""
"Nothing!""
Chloe covered her mouth.
Then she whispered, "Mom used the scanner.""
Everyone turned.
Melissa stared at her daughter.
Chloe was crying again.
"The night Naomi signed those papers," she said.
"You scanned them.""
Melissa shook her head.
"Stop.""
"You told me you needed her signature.""
"Chloe.""
"You said once you had Naomi's real signature, everything would be easier.""
Naomi felt numb.
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Easier for what?""
Chloe looked at her mother.
May you like
Then at Naomi.
"To make the other documents match.""
