Chapter 6: The Case Against Her Father

Daniel read the document twice.

Then a third time.

Nobody interrupted him.

Naomi stood several feet away, watching her father's expression shift from confusion to disbelief and finally to anger.

"What does it say?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Eric did.

"It's a draft court petition.""

Naomi looked at him.

"For what exactly?""

"To challenge Daniel's role in managing parts of the trust.""

"But Dad isn't sick.""

"No.""

"He isn't incompetent.""

"No.""

"Then how could she do that?""

Eric looked uncomfortable.

"She'd need evidence.""

Daniel finally spoke.

"Apparently she planned to manufacture some.""

Naomi's stomach tightened.

"What kind?""

Daniel handed Eric's phone back.

Eric hesitated.

"Financial mismanagement. Memory problems. Erratic behavior.""

Chloe stared.

"My mom was going to tell a court Dad had memory problems?""

Eric nodded.

"That's what the draft alleges.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"I run a company with eighty employees.""

"That doesn't mean a lawyer couldn't file something.""

"Who wrote it?""

"I don't know.""

"There's no attorney listed?""

"Draft only.""

Daniel held out his hand.

"Send it to me.""

Eric did.

Naomi watched the document arrive on Daniel's phone.

Her mind raced backward through the past year.

Then she remembered something.

"Dad.""

He looked at her.

"Melissa kept saying you forgot things.""

Daniel frowned.

"When?""

"All the time.""

Chloe looked up.

Naomi continued.

"At dinner. She'd say you promised things you didn't remember promising.""

Daniel's expression changed.

Chloe whispered, "She did that with me too.""

Naomi looked at her.

Chloe nodded.

"She'd tell me Dad said I could do something. Then when he said no, she'd tell me he forgot.""

Daniel stared at both girls.

Naomi suddenly remembered another moment.

"Last month you couldn't find your company credit card.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Melissa said you'd left it at a restaurant.""

"I thought I had.""

"You hadn't.""

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

He had found it three days later inside a desk drawer he was certain he'd already checked.

Chloe stood.

"And your watch.""

Daniel looked at her.

"What?""

"The silver watch you thought you lost.""

His face changed.

"It appeared in the laundry room.""

Chloe nodded.

"Mom put it there.""

Silence.

Daniel stared at her.

"How do you know?""

"I saw her.""

Naomi felt chills move across her arms.

"When?""

"The night before you found it.""

Daniel sat down.

For the first time, he looked shaken.

Not angry.

Shaken.

Melissa hadn't simply been stealing.

She had been building a story.

One misplaced object at a time.

One invented forgotten conversation at a time.

A husband becoming unreliable.

A father losing control.

A trustee who needed replacing.

Naomi sat beside him.

"Dad.""

He looked at her.

"You're not losing your memory.""

"I know.""

But his voice wasn't completely certain.

That scared Naomi more than anything else.

She took his hand.

"She wanted you to doubt yourself.""

Daniel stared at her.

Then nodded.

Eric paced near the fireplace.

"I didn't know she was doing that.""

Daniel looked at him.

"You knew about the petition.""

"I saw the draft.""

"And you said nothing.""

Eric stopped.

"I thought it was a threat.""

"Against me.""

"I know.""

"And still said nothing.""

Eric looked ashamed.

Daniel stood.

"You need to leave too.""

Naomi looked at him.

Eric nodded slowly.

"I understand.""

"But before you go, forward everything Melissa sent you.""

"I will.""

"Emails. Texts. Documents. Everything.""

"Okay.""

"And if you delete anything—"

"I won't.""

Daniel stared at him.

"I mean it, Eric.""

"I know.""

Eric walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he looked at Naomi.

"I'm sorry.""

Naomi didn't respond.

He deserved the silence.

After the door closed, the house became eerily quiet.

The three of them remained in the living room.

Daniel.

Naomi.

Chloe.

A family configuration none of them had expected an hour earlier.

Daniel rubbed his face.

"Chloe, do you have somewhere safe to stay tonight?""

She looked startled.

"You're making me leave?""

"No.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I'm asking whether you want to stay here.""

Chloe's eyes filled with tears again.

"I don't know.""

"You're welcome to.""

Naomi looked at him.

Daniel noticed.

"I know what happened today.""

Naomi understood what he meant.

He wasn't excusing Chloe.

But she was seventeen.

And whatever she'd done, sending her out after Melissa might put her directly back under the control of the person who had manipulated her.

Naomi nodded slightly.

Chloe saw it.

"Thank you," she whispered.

Daniel pointed toward the stairs.

"Go get some rest. Tomorrow we're going to have difficult conversations.""

Chloe nodded.

She walked halfway upstairs.

Then stopped.

"Daniel?""

He looked up.

"There's a box in Mom's closet.""

Naomi felt her stomach tighten.

"What box?"" Daniel asked.

"I don't know everything inside it.""

"Why are you telling me now?""

"Because she told me never to touch it.""

Daniel and Naomi exchanged a glance.

Chloe continued.

"It's behind the winter coats. On the top shelf.""

Daniel walked upstairs immediately.

Naomi followed.

Melissa and Daniel's bedroom looked perfectly ordinary.

Bed made.

Curtains open.

Perfume bottles arranged on the dresser.

Daniel opened the closet.

Behind several coats was a gray storage box.

He pulled it down.

It was locked.

Daniel stared at it.

Naomi's heart pounded.

"Can you open it?""

"I don't have the key.""

Chloe appeared in the doorway.

"She keeps a small key in her jewelry drawer.""

Daniel looked at her.

"How do you know?""

"I saw her use it.""

He opened the dresser.

The key was exactly where Chloe said.

The lock clicked.

Daniel lifted the lid.

Inside were folders.

Bank statements.

Printed emails.

Photocopies of identification documents.

Naomi saw her own birth certificate.

Her Social Security card copy.

Her passport copy.

She felt sick.

"Why does she have these?""

Daniel began going through everything.

Then he stopped.

A folder had Naomi's name written across the tab.

Inside were copies of trust statements dating back years.

Every balance.

Every investment report.

Every distribution restriction.

Melissa had studied all of it.

Daniel found another folder.

CHLOE.

Her bank information.

Her education account.

Records of transfers.

Then another.

DANIEL.

Naomi watched her father's face change.

"What?""

He pulled out medical paperwork.

Except it wasn't real medical paperwork.

It was a typed chronology.

Forgot appointment.

Misplaced wallet.

Repeated question.

Forgot dinner conversation.

Lost watch.

Each incident had a date beside it.

Daniel sat on the edge of the bed.

Naomi stared at the pages.

"She was documenting you.""

"Yes.""

"But some of those aren't true.""

Daniel looked closer.

Most weren't.

There were dates when Daniel supposedly missed meetings he had attended.

Dates when he supposedly forgot conversations Naomi remembered clearly.

One entry claimed he became confused while driving and couldn't remember the route home.

Naomi shook her head.

"That never happened.""

"I know.""

Chloe looked horrified.

"She told me to write some of those.""

Daniel looked at her.

"What?""

Chloe began crying.

"She said she needed examples.""

"Examples of what?""

"Times you forgot things.""

Daniel stood.

"Did you make these up?""

"Some.""

Naomi stared at her.

Chloe looked ashamed.

"She'd ask me questions like, 'Remember when Daniel forgot your volleyball game?'' And I'd say you didn't forget. Then she'd say you did, and eventually...""

"You wrote it down," Daniel finished.

Chloe nodded.

"I'm sorry.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

Naomi could see how much it hurt.

Not only the betrayal.

The precision of it.

Melissa hadn't made one impulsive bad decision.

She had been constructing a case.

Daniel opened another folder.

This one contained property listings.

Florida.

Several luxury condos.

One had been circled.

A handwritten note beside it read:

48K DOWN.

Another note:

TRUSTEE CHANGE FIRST.

Naomi stared.

There was no pretending anymore.

Daniel photographed every page.

Then he found an envelope at the bottom.

It was addressed to Melissa.

No return address.

Inside was a letter.

Daniel read it.

His expression changed.

"What's wrong?"" Naomi asked.

He handed it to her.

The letter was short.

A demand for repayment.

$63,500.

Naomi looked at the signature.

She didn't recognize the name.

"Who's Victor Hale?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Chloe did.

Her face changed immediately.

Naomi noticed.

"You know him.""

Chloe shook her head.

"Not really.""

"Who is he?""

Chloe looked frightened.

"Mom met him through the boutique.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"What does he do?""

"I don't know.""

"Chloe.""

"He lends people money.""

Daniel looked at the letter again.

"Sixty-three thousand dollars?""

Chloe whispered, "Mom said it was temporary.""

Naomi felt anger rising again.

"Everything is temporary when she takes money.""

Chloe flinched.

Naomi immediately regretted the sharpness.

Not because it wasn't true.

Because Chloe looked as scared as she felt.

Daniel read the letter again.

A deadline was printed at the bottom.

October 15.

Eleven days away.

"If she owes this man sixty-three thousand," Daniel said, "and another ninety thousand on credit cards...""

Naomi finished the thought.

"She needed my trust.""

Daniel nodded.

Three hundred thousand dollars.

Enough to wipe out everything.

Enough to buy the condo.

Enough to rescue the failing business.

Enough to start over.

If Melissa controlled it.

Daniel's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Daniel Parker?""

"Yes.""

"This is Cynthia Moore with First Central Bank's fraud department.""

Daniel immediately put the phone on speaker.

"I'm calling regarding several accounts connected to your household.""

Daniel looked at Naomi.

"What happened?""

"We received a request approximately twenty minutes ago to transfer funds from a joint account.""

Melissa.

Daniel's face hardened.

"How much?""

"Thirty-two thousand dollars.""

"Did it go through?""

"No. The account was flagged because of the restrictions placed earlier this evening.""

Daniel exhaled.

"Where was she trying to send it?""

"An account under MP Premier Holdings.""

Of course.

Daniel looked toward the open box.

"Block everything.""

"We can restrict outgoing transfers temporarily, but you'll need to come into a branch tomorrow.""

"I'll be there.""

Cynthia hesitated.

"Mr. Parker, there is another issue.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

Naomi almost wanted to laugh from exhaustion.

There was always another issue.

"What?""

"We reviewed recent activity after the fraud alert.""

Daniel waited.

"We found several electronic transfers that may require your confirmation.""

"From which account?""

"Your joint checking.""

"How much?""

"Combined, approximately eighteen thousand dollars.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"To where?""

"Multiple destinations.""

"Can you tell me the names?""

Cynthia listed them.

Most meant nothing to Daniel.

Then she said one name.

"Victor Hale.""

Daniel looked at the letter in his hand.

Naomi's heart raced.

"How much went to him?""

"Nine thousand dollars over three transactions.""

Daniel stared at Chloe.

"Your mother already paid him nine thousand.""

Chloe shook her head.

"She told me she paid him everything.""

Daniel frowned.

"When?""

"Last month.""

Something didn't fit.

If Melissa claimed the debt was paid last month, why did the letter still demand $63,500?

Naomi looked at the date.

The letter had arrived two weeks ago.

"Dad.""

Daniel looked at her.

"What if she owes him more than this?""

Daniel's expression changed.

Before he could answer, Chloe's phone buzzed.

She looked at it.

Then went pale.

"What?"" Naomi asked.

Chloe didn't speak.

"Chloe?""

She slowly turned the phone around.

A text message from Melissa.

COME OUTSIDE. NOW. DON'T TELL DANIEL.

Daniel stared at it.

Then another message arrived.

BRING THE GRAY BOX.

Naomi felt every hair on her arms rise.

Daniel walked toward the bedroom window.

He moved the curtain aside.

A car was parked across the street.

Not Melissa's car.

A dark SUV.

Its headlights were off.

But someone was sitting behind the wheel.

Chloe whispered, "That's not Mom's car.""

Daniel looked down at the gray box.

Then at the threatening repayment letter.

His phone buzzed.

An email from Richard.

Daniel opened it.

The subject line read:

URGENT — ADDITIONAL TRUST DOCUMENTS FOUND.

He opened the attachment.

Naomi stood beside him.

There was a copy of another proposed authorization.

A distribution request.

Not forty-eight thousand.

Not one hundred and twenty thousand.

The amount written on this one was $275,000.

Nearly the entire trust.

Daniel's face went white.

Naomi read the stated purpose.

PROPERTY ACQUISITION AND DEBT CONSOLIDATION FOR BENEFICIARY'S LONG-TERM INTEREST.

Then she saw the proposed destination account.

It wasn't Melissa's company.

It wasn't Eric's.

It belonged to a name they had just seen for the first time.

Victor Hale.

Chloe stared out the window at the dark SUV.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Daniel...""

The driver's door opened.

A man stepped onto the sidewalk.

Chloe backed away from the glass.

"That's him.""

Naomi looked at her.

"Who?""

May you like

Chloe's face had lost all color.

"Victor.""
