Chapter 9: The Money He Put in Her Name

The account statement changed everything.

For four years, money had been moving through an account registered under Emma's name.

She had never knowingly managed it.

She had never received the benefits.

And now a quarter of a million dollars had been transferred out of it three days before Daniel assaulted her.

Laura carefully documented the email while Marcus contacted the financial crimes investigators.

I stood beside Emma's bed, trying to understand how someone could build such an elaborate deception around a person he claimed to love.

“Emma, did you ever receive tax documents for this account?””

She shook her head.

“Daniel said he handled everything.””

“Did you file taxes jointly?””

“Yes.””

“Did he prepare the returns?””

“Always.””

Laura looked up.

“That information needs to be preserved. We may need to obtain the relevant financial records.””

Emma stared at the statement.

“Am I in trouble?””

Laura answered gently.

“We don't know the full circumstances yet. But being listed as an account holder does not automatically establish that you knowingly participated in any wrongdoing.””

Emma nodded, though she still looked terrified.

I sat beside her.

“Daniel made you believe he was handling the family's finances. That's what we're investigating.””

She looked at me.

“What if the money was stolen?””

“Then the investigators need to find out who moved it and who benefited.””

A knock interrupted us.

Marcus entered with a woman I'd never met.

She was in her early fifties, wearing a dark navy suit and carrying a leather briefcase.

“Claire, Emma, this is Special Agent Natalie Brooks. She works with the financial crimes task force.””

Natalie introduced herself to Emma.

“I understand there may be a bank account registered in your name that you didn't personally control.””

Emma nodded.

Natalie pulled out a chair.

“I'm going to ask some questions. You can stop whenever you need to.””

She began with the account.

When was it opened?

Who accompanied Emma?

What identification had she provided?

Did Daniel have the login information?

Had she ever received money from the account?

Emma answered as clearly as she could.

Then Natalie asked something unexpected.

“Did your husband ever mention a company called Northbridge Consulting?””

Emma frowned.

“No.””

Natalie glanced at Marcus.

“That's interesting.””

“What is Northbridge?”” I asked.

Natalie opened her briefcase and removed a printed document.

“It's a company that received several transfers from the account registered to your sister.””

“How much?””

“Approximately $430,000 over the last eighteen months.””

Emma looked horrified.

“I've never heard of it.””

Natalie nodded.

“We're checking the ownership records.””

“Who owns it?””

She turned the page.

“That's the problem. The company is registered to a private business address, and the ownership structure is deliberately complicated.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Could Daniel own it?””

“Possibly,” Natalie replied.

“We need documentation.””

She continued reviewing the records.

Then she stopped at a particular transaction.

“Here.””

She pointed to a transfer dated six months earlier.

The recipient was listed as a personal account.

The account holder's name was Robert Hayes.

The amount was $25,000.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Natalie.

“Are you certain?””

“This is a preliminary record. We'll need the bank to authenticate it.””

“Is there another payment?””

She turned the page.

Another transfer.

$15,000.

Then another.

$35,000.

The dates were spread across several months.

Combined, the payments totaled $75,000.

Exactly the amount written beside Robert's name in Daniel's notebook.

I felt sick.

Natalie closed the folder.

“We're now looking at a possible connection between the financial transactions and the suspected interference in the domestic assault investigation.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“Can we establish whether Hayes personally controlled that account?””

“That's part of what we're pursuing.””

My phone rang.

Mom.

I answered.

“What's happening?””

“Claire, the investigators are here. Your father found something else.””

“What?””

“A letter from the bank. It says we're guarantors on a loan.””

I closed my eyes.

“How much?””

Mom's voice broke.

“One point eight million dollars.””

Emma heard her.

She covered her mouth.

“Mom…”

I switched to speaker.

“Mom, listen. Don't panic. The investigators have the documents.””

“Your father says he never signed anything.””

I looked at Laura.

“Did Dad sign the guarantee?””

Mom hesitated.

“He says the signature isn't his.””

I felt a chill.

“Are you certain?””

“He says Daniel brought him a document years ago and told him it was a property insurance form.””

I looked at Emma.

She was crying silently.

Daniel hadn't merely manipulated his wife.

He had used our entire family.

“Mom, don't sign anything. Don't speak to Daniel or his attorney. Let the investigators handle this.””

“Claire, how could he do this to us?””

I didn't have an answer.

After the call ended, Emma stared at the ceiling.

“I brought him into our family.””

I leaned forward.

“No. You married someone who lied to you. Those are not the same thing.””

“But he used my name.””

“And we will find out how.””

She turned toward me.

“Do you think he married me because of the money?””

The question stayed between us.

I remembered their wedding.

Daniel had cried during his vows.

He had promised to protect Emma.

He had told my father he would spend the rest of his life making her happy.

Now we were discovering that the marriage might have been part of a financial scheme.

I didn't want to answer without proof.

“I don't know yet.””

Emma closed her eyes.

Then she whispered:

“There's one more thing.””

I waited.

“Daniel once told me he knew something about Dad's past.””

“What?””

“He said Dad had signed something years before we met. Something involving a property deal.””

My mind went back to the $1.8 million guarantee.

“What property deal?””

“I don't know. But Daniel said it was the reason he could never let the family turn against him.””

Laura immediately wrote it down.

Before she could ask another question, Marcus's phone rang.

He listened, then looked at Natalie.

“We've got confirmation from the bank.””

Natalie stood.

“What?””

“The $75,000 in transfers to Hayes came from the account registered under Emma's name.””

I stared at him.

“Can they establish who initiated them?””

Marcus nodded.

“Preliminary authentication points to a device registered to Daniel Mercer.””

Emma began crying again.

But Marcus wasn't finished.

“The financial investigators also located a second account.””

“Whose name?””

He looked directly at me.

“Claire Bennett.””

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

I had never opened an account with Daniel.

I had never authorized him to move money on my behalf.

Natalie placed a document on the table.

It showed an account registered four years earlier.

My full name.

My date of birth.

My old residential address.

And a signature that looked disturbingly similar to mine.

I stared at it.

“That's not my signature.””

Natalie nodded.

“We suspected as much.””

She turned the page.

There were three transfers listed beneath the account details.

One for $40,000.

One for $60,000.

And one for $125,000.

All sent to the same company.

Northbridge Consulting.

I looked at Marcus.

“Why would Daniel use my name?””

He didn't answer immediately.

Then Laura's phone rang.

She listened for several seconds.

Her expression changed.

“What happened?”” I asked.

She slowly lowered the phone.

“Daniel Mercer has requested a private meeting with the financial crimes investigators.””

“Why?””

Laura looked at me.

“He says he'll explain everything.””

“Everything about what?””

She hesitated.

“About the money, the forged signatures, and Robert Hayes.””

I stood.

“Then let him talk.””

Laura shook her head.

“There's one condition.””

“What?””

“He says he will only give his statement if you agree to meet him in person.””

I laughed once, without humor.

“Absolutely not.””

Marcus nodded.

“That's the correct decision.””

But Emma suddenly grabbed my hand.

“Claire.””

I turned.

She was staring at the document bearing my forged signature.

“He isn't asking to meet you because he wants to explain.””

“Then why?””

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

“Because there's something Daniel told me the night he hurt me.””

I leaned closer.

“What did he say?””

Emma looked toward the door.

“He said that if you ever discovered what happened four years ago, you'd understand why he chose our family.””

She swallowed painfully.

Then she delivered the final piece.

“Claire, Daniel didn't just steal our identities.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He told me he had been waiting for you to become a police officer.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

Emma's fingers tightened around mine.

May you like

“Because he needed someone inside the department before he could make the final transfer.””

And suddenly, the twelve years I'd spent serving the law felt like the very thing someone had been planning to exploit all along.
