Chapter 2: The Secret She Had Been Hiding

The emergency department smelled of antiseptic, coffee, and wet clothing.

At 4:26 a.m., Emma was taken behind a set of double doors for examination.

I stood in the corridor, staring at the blood on my sleeve.

It wasn't much.

A small dark stain near the cuff.

But it was my sister's blood.

And I couldn't stop looking at it.

“Claire?””

I turned.

Detective Marcus Reed was approaching with a paper cup in his hand. He was a senior investigator in our department and had known Emma almost as long as he'd known me.

“I heard the call,” he said.

“How is she?””

“Still being examined.””

“What happened?””

I gave him the facts. The phone call. The injuries.

Daniel blocking the doorway. The statements he'd made.

Marcus listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he set his coffee down.

“Are you the primary witness?””

“Yes.””

“Then you know what happens next.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“Claire, you're her sister. You need to let another investigator handle the case.””

“I've already requested that.””

“Good.””

He studied my face.

“And you need to stop blaming yourself.””

I looked away.

“I should've noticed.””

“Noticed what?””

“That she was afraid.””

Marcus sighed.

“People who are being abused become very good at hiding it. Especially from the people they love.””

Before I could answer, a nurse approached.

“Officer Bennett?””

I straightened.

“That's me.””

“Your sister is asking for you.””

I followed her into the examination room.

Emma lay on the hospital bed with an IV in her arm. Her face looked worse under the bright medical lights.

A doctor had placed a temporary splint around her wrist. There were bruises along her ribs, shoulder, and jaw.

I pulled a chair beside her.

“Hey, beautiful.””

She tried to smile.

“You look terrible.””

I almost laughed.

“You should see the other guy.””

Her expression changed.

“Did they arrest him?””

“Officers are still handling the situation. Marcus is making sure everything is documented properly.””

She looked down at the blanket.

“Claire, I need to tell you something.””

“Take your time.””

“I didn't call you because of tonight.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

She swallowed.

“I called because he found the messages.””

“What messages?””

Emma closed her eyes.

“For the last six months, I've been saving pictures. Recording things he said. Taking photographs whenever he hurt me.””

My mouth went dry.

“Where are they?””

“He found the folder on my laptop.””

“Did he destroy it?””

“I don't know.””

She began to cry.

“He said he'd make sure I never saw you again.””

I reached for her hand.

“Emma, listen to me. You're safe right now.””

“No, Claire. You don't understand Daniel.””

“Then help me understand.””

She stared at the ceiling.

“When we first got married, he was wonderful. He brought me coffee in bed. He remembered every little thing I liked. He told everyone I was the best thing that had ever happened to him.””

I said nothing.

“He didn't hit me at first. He just wanted to know where I was. Who I talked to. Why I didn't answer immediately.””

Her voice cracked.

“Then he started checking my phone.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was embarrassed.””

“Emma…”

“I kept thinking I could fix it. I thought if I stopped making him angry, things would go back to normal.””

She wiped a tear from her cheek.

“Then he started apologizing. Flowers. Jewelry.

Expensive dinners. He'd cry and promise he'd never do it again.””

I remembered the anniversary dinner three months earlier.

Daniel had arrived at our parents' house with a huge bouquet of roses. He'd kissed Emma's forehead and told everyone she was the reason he believed in love.

I'd even congratulated him.

I felt sick.

“What happened tonight?”” I asked quietly.

“He found out I'd been talking to a divorce attorney.””

I leaned forward.

“You'd contacted one?””

She nodded.

“Three weeks ago. I wanted to leave before things got worse.””

“Did you tell anyone?””

“No.””

“Did the attorney send you anything?””

“A letter. I think Daniel found it in the mailbox.””

I sat back.

The pieces were beginning to form a picture.

“Did he hurt you because you wanted a divorce?””

“He said I was trying to ruin him.””

She looked toward the door.

“Then he took my keys. My phone. He wouldn't let me leave.””

Her fingers tightened around mine.

“I tried to get past him. He grabbed me and threw me into the dresser. When I fell, he kicked me.””

I closed my eyes briefly.

“I'm sorry.””

“He kept saying nobody would believe me because he was a good husband.””

She took a shaky breath.

“And then he said something else.””

“What?””

“He said you would never risk your career for me.””

I looked directly at her.

“He doesn't know me very well.””

A tiny, exhausted smile appeared on her face.

For the first time that morning, she looked like my twin again.

Then the doctor entered and explained that Emma had a fractured wrist, several fractured ribs, and injuries consistent with repeated blunt-force trauma. She would need further imaging and observation.

I listened carefully.

When he left, I sat beside her.

“I'm going to ask you something, and I need you to answer honestly.””

She nodded.

“Does Daniel have access to your bank accounts?””

“Yes.””

“Your email?””

“Yes.””

“Your medical information?””

She hesitated.

“Probably.””

“Has he ever threatened to hurt someone else?””

Emma looked toward the window.

“My friend Rachel.””

“Why Rachel?””

“Because she told me to leave him.””

My stomach tightened.

“When was this?””

“Two weeks ago.””

“What exactly did he say?””

Emma looked at me.

“He told me that if Rachel kept interfering in our marriage, he'd make her disappear.””

I took out my notebook.

“Did you tell Rachel?””

“No.””

“Did Daniel have a reason to know she was helping you?””

“He read our messages.””

I wrote everything down.

Then Emma suddenly reached toward my wrist.

“Claire, there's more.””

I leaned closer.

“What?””

“He didn't act alone tonight.””

For a moment, I couldn't process the words.

“What do you mean?””

She looked terrified.

“Someone came to the house after he hurt me.””

“Who?””

“I heard them downstairs. They were talking about the folder on my laptop.””

My pen stopped moving.

“Did you recognize the voice?””

She nodded slowly.

Then she whispered a name.

“Your husband was there.””

I stared at her.

“Emma, I'm not married.””

She swallowed.

“I know. I mean… the man Daniel called your future husband.””

My blood ran cold.

“What are you talking about?””

She looked toward the doorway again.

“Daniel said he had someone inside the department. Someone who could make the whole thing disappear.””

I stood.

“Did he give you a name?””

Emma nodded.

May you like

Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

“Sergeant Robert Hayes.””
