Chapter 4: The Man in the Photograph

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The photograph on my phone showed Robert Hayes standing inside Emma's bedroom, his reflection captured in the tall mirror beside the dresser.

He was wearing his department-issued uniform.

And he was looking directly toward the camera.

“Marcus,” I whispered.

He stepped closer.

“What?””

I handed him my phone.

He studied the photograph, enlarged it, then looked at Laura.

“Where did this come from?””

“An unknown number. It arrived thirty seconds ago.””

Laura took out her own phone and photographed the screen.

“Don't delete anything. Don't reply. We need to preserve the original message and its metadata.””

Marcus examined the image again.

“That's Hayes.””

“I know.””

“Are you absolutely certain?””

I stared at the familiar face.

“I've worked beside him for twelve years.””

Marcus exhaled slowly.

“Then this just became a much bigger investigation.””

I glanced toward Emma's hospital room.

“Does she know?””

“Not yet,” Laura said.

“And I wouldn't show her that photograph until we've established what it means.””

I nodded.

But my mind was already racing.

Robert had been in that bedroom. He had seen Emma injured. He had apparently helped Daniel conceal something.

And now someone was warning me to stay away.

Marcus stepped into the corridor and made a call to the department's internal affairs commander. He didn't mention details over the phone, only that there was credible information suggesting potential misconduct by an active supervisor.

Meanwhile, Laura began documenting the threatening messages.

“Claire,” she said quietly, “I need you to consider something.””

“What?””

“If Hayes has access to department systems, he may know which officers responded to the house.””

“I know.””

“He may also know your schedule, your address, and the people you're close to.””

I looked at her.

“Are you suggesting he could be watching us?””

“I'm suggesting we don't assume this is limited to what happened at Emma's house.””

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Mom.

I almost didn't pick up.

“Claire?””

Her voice was trembling.

“Mom, what's wrong?””

“Someone called your father.””

“Who?””

“A man from the police department. He said there had been a misunderstanding involving Emma and Daniel.””

My stomach tightened.

“What exactly did he say?””

“He said Emma had been drinking, that she was upset, and that Daniel was trying to keep the situation private.””

I closed my eyes.

“Did he give his name?””

Mom hesitated.

“Robert. Robert Hayes.””

I looked at Marcus.

He immediately motioned for me to put the call on speaker.

“Mom, listen carefully. Do not speak to Robert again. Don't delete anything he sent or said. Did he tell you where Emma was?””

“He asked which hospital.””

“Did you tell him?””

“No. Your father said he wasn't comfortable discussing it.””

For the first time that morning, I felt a little relief.

“Good. Where's Dad now?””

“He's downstairs. He's furious.””

“Tell him to stay home and keep the doors locked. I'll explain everything when I can.””

Mom started crying.

“Claire, is Emma going to be okay?””

I looked through the glass.

My sister was asleep beneath a white hospital blanket.

“I don't know everything yet,” I said.

“But she's not alone.””

After ending the call, I turned to Marcus.

“Hayes contacted my parents.””

“That's interference.””

“He's trying to control the story before anyone hears Emma's side.””

Laura nodded.

“Which means we need to move quickly, but carefully.””

At 6:18 a.m., Marcus received confirmation that an internal affairs investigator was on the way.

Then James Miller called.

“Marcus, we have a problem.””

Marcus put him on speaker.

“What happened?””

“Mercer's attorney just arrived at the station.””

“Already?””

“Apparently. He's demanding immediate access to his client and claiming the detention is unlawful.””

Marcus frowned.

“What's the attorney's name?””

“Victor Lang.””

I knew that name.

Victor Lang was one of the most expensive criminal defense attorneys in the county. He represented wealthy businessmen, politicians, and people who expected the law to bend around their money.

James continued.

“And there's something else. Mercer keeps asking whether Claire is still at the hospital.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Why?””

James hesitated.

“He says he has something important to tell her.””

Marcus shook his head.

“He can tell his attorney.””

Then James added something that made the room go silent.

“Mercer also says the woman in the photograph isn't Hayes.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He claims the photograph was taken months ago, during a home renovation. Says Hayes came over to inspect some electrical work.””

Laura looked at me.

“That's a convenient explanation.””

“There's more,” James said.

“Go on.””

“He says the photograph was actually taken by Emma herself. And he says she has been threatening him with it.””

I felt anger rise in my throat.

Daniel was already preparing his defense.

He wasn't just denying what he'd done.

He was trying to turn Emma into the aggressor.

Then Marcus's phone rang again.

He listened for a few seconds.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He walked toward the window.

“Are you sure?””

A pause.

“Send it to Laura. Immediately.””

He ended the call.

“What now?”” I asked.

Marcus looked at me.

“The department's access logs show that someone opened the incident report on Emma's assault at 5:56 a.m.””

I frowned.

“That's impossible. The report was only just being completed.””

“Exactly.””

“Who accessed it?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Robert Hayes.””

And then he added:

“He didn't just read it. Someone attempted to change the narrative field.””
