Chapter 19: The Man Who Came Back From the Dead
Ray couldn't hear anything except the pounding of his own heart.
"Say that again.""
Harold's voice trembled through the phone.
"I said the bank received a live video verification from a man identifying himself as Michael Callahan.""
"That's impossible.""
"I know what the death certificate says. I know what the hospital records say. But I saw the video myself.""
Ray looked toward Evelyn.
She had heard enough to understand.
"Is it him?"" she whispered.
Ray didn't answer.
Dorothy approached, still holding Lily's hand.
"What's happened?""
Ray lowered the phone.
"Harold says Dad may be alive.""
Dorothy's face went white.
For a moment, she seemed unable to stand.
Then she grabbed Ray's arm.
"Where?""
"Harold saw him on a bank verification video.""
"Then we go there.""
Marcus immediately called the bank's security department. Elaine arranged for Dorothy and Lily to remain with investigators while Ray and Evelyn headed back toward Harold's office.
Daniel insisted on coming.
Ray looked at him.
"Why?""
"Because if Michael is alive, I need to know what he knows.""
Ray studied his brother.
"You're going to tell me everything you've been hiding.""
Daniel nodded.
"I will.""
The drive back was silent.
When they arrived, Harold was waiting with his laptop open.
He looked older than he had that morning.
"Show me," Ray demanded.
Harold turned the screen.
The video showed a man seated in a private office. His hair was almost entirely white, his face thinner, but his eyes were unmistakable.
Ray's breath caught.
He had seen those eyes in every childhood photograph.
His father's eyes.
The man looked directly into the camera.
"My name is Michael Callahan. I am requesting access to the account established under the original family agreement.""
Then he gave a date of birth, an old identification number, and a security phrase.
The phrase was the last line of a letter Michael had written to Ray when he was twelve.
The strongest people don't inherit a family. They protect one.
Ray stepped backward.
"No.""
Evelyn stared at the screen.
"That's him.""
Daniel sank into a chair.
"He's alive.""
Harold paused the video.
"The bank's fraud department rejected the verification because the death certificate remains active. But the person knew every security answer.""
Ray looked at him.
"Where was the video recorded?""
"The bank hasn't disclosed the location yet.""
"Get it.""
"I'm trying.""
Evelyn moved closer to the screen.
"Can you play it again?""
Harold did.
This time, she noticed something.
"Stop.""
Harold paused.
"Look behind him.""
There was a framed photograph on the wall.
A younger Michael stood beside Frank Miller.
But there was another person in the photograph.
A woman.
Evelyn leaned closer.
"That's my mother.""
Harold nodded slowly.
The photograph appeared to have been taken decades earlier.
Ray stared at the wall behind the man.
There was also a calendar.
The date was visible.
It was current.
Not an old recording.
Someone had filmed the verification that morning.
Daniel stood.
"Where is he?""
Harold shook his head.
"We don't know.""
Ray turned toward his brother.
"Did you know?""
Daniel looked offended.
"No.""
"You said Patricia told you your father was dead.""
"Because he was.""
"Then how do you explain this?""
Daniel lowered his head.
"I can't.""
Harold's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and then looked toward Ray.
"The bank has released the location.""
"Where?""
"An assisted-living facility outside Nashville.""
Ray frowned.
"Why would he be there?""
Harold checked the file.
"He's registered under another name.""
Evelyn whispered, "What name?""
Harold read it aloud.
"Michael Franklin.""
Ray felt sick.
Franklin.
His father's middle name.
A name chosen to connect him to Frank.
They left immediately.
The facility stood behind a line of trees on a quiet road. It looked expensive, private, and heavily secured.
A nurse met them at the entrance.
"Can I help you?""
Ray showed her the photograph.
"We're looking for this man.""
The nurse studied it.
Then she looked toward the reception desk.
"Mr. Franklin?""
Ray nodded.
"Is he here?""
"I'm sorry. We can't disclose residents' information.""
Harold stepped forward.
"We have a legal matter involving his identity and a possible fraudulent financial transaction.""
The nurse hesitated.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
"Let them in.""
Everyone turned.
An elderly man stood near the elevator.
He held a walking cane.
His hair was white.
His shoulders were bent.
But his eyes were exactly as Ray remembered.
Michael Callahan.
Ray couldn't speak.
Neither could Evelyn.
Michael looked at them for a long time.
Then he smiled sadly.
"Raymond.""
Ray's hands began shaking.
"You were dead.""
Michael nodded.
"That's what everyone was supposed to believe.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Why?""
Michael looked at him.
"Because I had to disappear.""
"From your own children?""
Michael's expression changed.
"I thought I was protecting you.""
Ray laughed bitterly.
"You left us with a dead man's grave and fourteen years of unanswered questions.""
Michael lowered his eyes.
"I know.""
Evelyn approached him.
"Did you know about me?""
Michael's face crumpled.
"Every day.""
"Then why didn't you come?""
"I was told you were safe. I was told Frank had found a way to protect you.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"Frank tried. But Patricia kept us apart.""
Michael closed his eyes.
"Then I failed both of you.""
Ray stepped forward.
"Why did you disappear?""
Michael looked toward the nurse.
"Can we talk somewhere private?""
They entered a small sitting room.
Michael sat down slowly.
He explained that fourteen years earlier, he had discovered Patricia and Gordon had been manipulating his accounts. He had also learned that Daniel had helped them transfer the first four million dollars.
He confronted Patricia.
She threatened to expose Daniel's parentage, implicate Frank in financial crimes, and destroy Dorothy's home.
Michael believed the only way to protect the family was to disappear temporarily while an investigation was arranged.
But the plan failed.
His supposed death was recorded after a staged medical emergency, and the people who helped him vanish never completed the promised investigation.
"Who arranged your disappearance?"" Ray asked.
Michael hesitated.
"A doctor named Peterson.""
Ray stared.
"Dr. Peterson?""
Michael nodded.
"The same man who later appeared at Dorothy's house?""
"Yes.""
Evelyn looked horrified.
"He helped fake your death?""
Michael nodded.
"He was being paid by Patricia.""
Daniel stood.
"And you let me believe you were dead.""
Michael looked at him.
"You had already betrayed the family.""
Daniel flinched.
"I was twenty-one.""
"You were old enough to know what you were doing.""
"I tried to fix it.""
Michael's expression softened slightly.
"I know. Frank told me.""
Daniel looked down.
Michael continued.
"But every time you tried to fix it, Patricia found another way to use you.""
Ray stepped closer.
"Why did you contact the bank today?""
Michael looked toward Harold.
"Because Patricia was about to take the last protected account. I had to stop her.""
"How did you know?""
"Because the person who was supposed to be monitoring that account was killed three days ago.""
Harold went pale.
"Who?""
Michael gave him a name.
Harold slowly sat down.
"That was my colleague.""
Michael nodded.
"He was investigating the original transfer records. Patricia found out.""
Ray looked at Michael.
"Then why not contact the police?""
"I did.""
"Fourteen years ago?""
Michael shook his head.
"Three days ago.""
He reached into his pocket and removed a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Patricia standing beside a younger man.
Ray recognized him.
Gordon.
But there was another person in the photograph.
Dr. Peterson.
On the back was a handwritten note.
The next person they intend to silence is Dorothy.
Ray's stomach tightened.
"Mom is in danger.""
Michael stood abruptly.
"Where is she?""
"With the investigators.""
"Then we need to get her somewhere secure.""
Ray called Marcus.
The call went straight to voicemail.
He tried Elaine.
No answer.
Then Dorothy's phone.
Nothing.
Michael grabbed his cane.
"Raymond, listen to me. Patricia doesn't need the money anymore.""
"Then what does she want?""
Michael looked at him.
"She wants the original ownership record.""
Harold frowned.
"What ownership record?""
Michael opened the envelope again.
There was one final page.
A document naming the true owner of the Callahan estate.
And beneath it was a signature.
Not Michael's.
Not Frank's.
It belonged to Dorothy Miller.
Ray stared.
"Why is Mom's name on this?""
Michael's voice dropped.
"Because the estate was never mine to begin with.""
Before anyone could ask another question, Ray's phone finally rang.
It was Marcus.
Ray answered immediately.
"Where is Dorothy?""
Marcus's voice was frantic.
"She's gone.""
Ray stopped breathing.
"What do you mean, gone?""
"The vehicle was found abandoned outside the facility. Elaine and Sarah are safe, but Dorothy and Lily are missing.""
Michael gripped the edge of the table.
May you like
Then he whispered:
"Patricia has them.""
